‘My original nose was gone; fell into deep, deep depression’

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who addressed the ‘visibly different nose’ that the public noticed in the early 2000s in her memoir, Unfinished, spoke further about the same on the Howard Stern Show.

“It was a dark phase,” Jonas told Stern, explaining that it all began after doctors recommended she get a polyp in her nasal cavity removed. “The surgeons made mistakes during the procedure. This thing happens, and my face looks completely different,” she added.

In her memoir, she explained: “While shaving off the polyp, the doctor also accidentally shaved the bridge of my nose, and the bridge collapsed. When it was time to remove the bandages and the condition of my nose was revealed, mum and I were horrified. My original nose was gone.”

Jonas said that botched nose surgery drove her into a “deep, deep depression”, and she even thought it could end her career. While it didn’t end up being the case, she was “fired from three different movies”, which made her believe that her acting career “was over before it started”.

The 40-year-old then went on to credit director Anil Sharma — who directed Jonas’ first Hindi film, The Hero: Love Story Of A Spy (2003) — for giving her work despite it all: “I was supposed to play the lead, and I was shifted to a supporting character. He, while the tide was against me, said, ‘It will be a small part, but give it your all’. And I did.”
