Anupam on Laal Singh Chaddha boycott: It wasn’t a great film

Calls for boycotting Laal Singh Chaddha grew louder closer to its release in August 2022. Despite all the anticipation around the Kareena Kapoor Khan and Aamir Khan-starrer, the film tanked at the box office.

But, actor Anupam Kher feels that nothing could have stopped Laal Singh Chaddha from working “if it were a great film”.

Kher, during a recent podcast, told ANI, “Laal Singh Chaddha was not a great film. If it was a great film, then no power would’ve stopped it. Aamir Khan’s PK (2014) worked really well. The point is, you need to accept the truth.”

The Uunchai (2022) actor added, “I am not for boycott trends, not at all. But, you can’t stop somebody from doing what they want to do. If your product is good, it will find its audience. In fact, they (those calling for boycott) will go with a vengeance. The only way to kill this trend is to make brilliant work.”

A number of other films, including Akshay Kumar-starrer Raksha Bandhan (2022), also faced such ‘boycott’ calls prior to release. But, Kher feels this ‘boycott’ trend will not affect a film. “If a film is good, it will work. If a film is bad, it will not [work], but not because of the boycott trend,” he reasoned.

The actor went on to mention that everybody is entitled to expressing their views and if an actor has the right to say something about a situation, they should also be brave enough to go through the consequences.

The boycott call against Laal Singh Chaddha began after Khan’s 2015 interview — where he said his then-wife Kiran Rao suggested they move out of India because of “growing intolerance” — resurfaced on social media.
