Rahman’s ‘Rockstar moment’: Gig halted by cops in Pune

HINDUSTAN TIMES (May 3, 2023)

Oscar-winning music composer A R Rahman’s concert in Pune was stopped midway by the police as it went past the 10 pm deadline, an official said.

A video has since surfaced, wherein a police officer is seen walking on to the stage, gesturing Rahman and other artistes present to wrap up the concert.

“As it was past the deadline of 10 pm, we asked him (Rahman) and other artistes to stop the show. They followed the instructions and stopped the show,” said inspector Santosh Patil, who was seen in the video asking Rahman and other artistes to stop the show, pointing at his watch.

However, no case has been registered in this regard, a senior police official said.

Taking to social media, the 56-year-old singer-composer thanked those who attended the concert for “all the love and euphoria” during “a roller coaster concert”.

He went on to share two reels from the show, writing: “Did we all just have the “Rockstar” moment on stage yesterday? I think we did! We were overwhelmed by the love of the audience and kept wanting to give more. Pune, thank you once again for such a memorable evening. Here’s a little snippet of our roller coaster ride,” he wrote, presumably hinting at the incident.

An aide close to Rahman said the police could have talked to the organisers instead of pointing fingers at the Padma Bhushan awardee. “10 pm was the curfew, we said it’s the last song and only a minute left. The police officer went to the stage and asked ARR (Rahman) directly to stop, pointing a finger at him. They should have talked to the organisers or the control booth,” the aide said.

Event organizer Dr Heramb Shelke said stopping the show in this manner was disrespectful to Rahman and it could’ve been done in a “decent manner”. “At the last moment, this should not have happened as the entire programme was well organized,” he said.
