The newborn elephants, made famous by the Oscar-winning Indian documentary, The Elephant Whisperers, are attracting a large crowd of tourists at the Mudumalai Theppakadu elephant camp. The film revolves around a family adopting two infant orphan elephants in Tamil Nadu.
Ranjitha, a guard from the camp who monitors and takes care of the elephants at Theppakadu, says that Raghu and Ammu have been getting many visitors in the last two days. “No special arrangements have been made for the public, but people visit them in the mornings and evenings. People who know about The Elephant Whisperers winning an Oscar click pictures from a distance. Occasionally, I even inform visitors about the film’s achievement,” she says.
The camp doesn’t allow people too close to the elephants. “But there is a spot from which they can view and interact with them safely,” she says.
However, Bomman, the caretaker who features in the film, says that Mudhumalai Camp has always been a major tourist attraction, with visitors frequenting it throughout the year.
