New Delhi : Two days before the film is scheduled to hit theatres, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the producers of Gangubai Kathiawadi whether it would be possible to change the title of the movie in view of pending litigations including defamation case filed against them.
A Bench headed by Justice Indira Banerjee asked the producers to inform the court by Thursday. The court was hearing an appeal filed against the stay on the summons issued by a Mumbai court in a criminal defamation complaint against the producers, actress Alia Bhatt, and authors S Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges.
The Bombay High Court had stayed proceedings in the criminal defamation suit filed against the producers and actor Alia Bhatt. The court had passed the order on a plea filed by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bhatt and Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges on whose book, The Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the film is based.
The suit was filed by Gangubai’s adopted son seeking injunction against Bhansali Productions from producing, directing or airing the promo of any film based on the novel. The film features Alia Bhatt as Gangubai.
