Four of singer Akriti Kakar’s live shows have been cancelled due to the increase in Coronavirus cases across the country. Although she believes that health should come first, she cannot help but notice the impact of the crisis on the live music industry.
“It surely is a matter of concern,” says the singer, adding, “A few of those gigs were public concerts. It’s good that they’ve been postponed until further notice, but it’s unfortunate that other (private) gigs are getting cancelled too. Also, [what’s confusing is that] each state has its own set of rules.”
Kakar is concerned that the current surge will cause financial problems, similar to the first wave of the pandemic. “The sudden pause on live gigs has thrown off everyone, financially. I, too, have EMIs and other expenses that cannot be dodged,” rues the Saturday Saturday (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania; 2014) singer.
Kakar goes on to add that if the situation continues, the livelihoods of musicians who rely solely on live gigs will be severely impacted. She says she is skeptical of the industry’s ability to recover from losses.
“The live music industry has suffered the most, and it’s critical that when the Covid-19 situation improves, people return to believing in live acts and spending on them,” shares Kakar.
On the personal front, the 35-year-old, who believes that emotional well-being is just as important as financial stability, is currently focused on maintaining her mental health.
“I’ve made a list of affirmations. I read them aloud each day and tell myself to be grateful. I also do guided meditation and spend as little time as possible on social media,” concludes the singer.
