The box office in USA showed more positive signs this week as the long weekend cumulative total hit $100 million for the first time since last March. A QUIET PLACE PART II raked up $48 million over its three day weekend making it the biggest opener since the pandemic started, beating the $32 million weekend figure of GODZILLA VS. KONG.
The GODZILLA VS. KONG numbers was good considering the pandemic but with A QUIET PLACE PART II the collections were great, be it pandemic or no pandemic. The film is not the blockbuster type of film but it shows huge numbers are around the corner when the bigger films come. The numbers have also came despite most of Canada closed.
The other new release CRUELLA also opened well with a weekend of $21 million which is the fourth best opening since the pandemic after A QUIET PLACE PART II, GODZILLA VS. KONG and MORTAL KOMBAT. CRUELLA had a same day release on Disney Plus which would have hit collections. A QUIET PLACE PART II, meawhile, was a only a theatrical release.
The top opening weekends in USA/Canada since the pandemic started last March are as follows.
1. A Quiet Place Part II - $47.4 million
2. Godzilla vs. Kong - $31.6 million
3. Mortal Kombat - $23.3 million
4. Cruella - $21.3 million
5. Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train - $21.1 million
