While Vicky Kaushal kick-started his career as a lead in Masaan (2015), he went on to make a mark with strong albeit supporting roles — whether as Iqbal Syed in Raazi (2018) or Kamlesh Kanhaiyalal Kapasi in Sanju (2018). However, after the success of Uri: The Surgical Strike this year, and winning the National Award for the portrayal, the actor says that he is not too keen on doing supporting roles.
No secondary roles
Vicky said during a chat with us recently, “The rule that I’ve made for myself while choosing a project is that I want to be part of good films where people are happy after watching them. Sometimes, you have to take the lead part because when you’re the face of a movie, there is a certain kind of investment in you that a producer makes. So, if I play the main guy and then do a supporting role, his money is at risk. It becomes a difficult job for the filmmaker to market me as a lead hero. And, I have to be loyal to him. Maybe for that reason, I won’t be able to take up a secondary part even if it is a good role and film.” The 31-year-old actor also added that if everything fits the bill and he gets the opportunity to be part of a promising project, he wouldn’t miss that chance.
Donning the uniform again
After Uri, Vicky will once again be seen playing a military officer in a film based on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, to be helmed by his Raazi director, Meghna Gulzar. About the film, Vicky says, “More than the uniform or the military, it’s about that person and India during the time he was active. So, the film won’t just be about the person, but also about how the nation was taking shape. It’s a big responsibility and I’m going to be extremely nervous while doing the project.”
