Sonu Sood is all set for a reel life Mahabharata now. He plays Arjun in a mythological titled Kurukshetra, inspired by the battle of battles. It will release in in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
“It is one of the most expensive films in Kannada and based on a chapter in the Mahabharata in which the war unfolds. We have borrowed the title from there. I’ve grown up on the epic but never imagined that I’d be playing Arjun onscreen someday,” exults the actor who would perform in the Ramlila back in his home town.
The epic saga is being shot in 3D and Sonu admits that he was blown away by the grandeur during the shoot. “The entire Ramoji Film City was filled with huge palaces and battle grounds, with horses and elephants milling around. Since they couldn’t find enough horses in Hyderabad, they got some from Bangalore, Mumbai and Chennai. It was a huge unit of around 600 people and the studio looked like a war zone,” says Sonu who after 90 films in different languages, confides that a mythological was on his wish list.
Prod him on the challenges of a period film, and he points out that during the 100-day, getting into costume, and fixing the head gear and armour, was a task in itself. “I’d wonder how people from the era carried so much metal on their body. Just getting into costume would take me an hour-and-a-half,” he reminisces, adding that shooting war scenes with 300-400 people running behind him with swords was also unforgettable. “I was fighting with swords and bows, riding horses and chariots in old-world costumes.”
Actors from all three industries have come together for this film. The ensemble cast includes Darshan, V Ravichandran, Arjun Sarja, Sneha, Meghana Raj and the late actor, Ambarish. The Naganna-directorial was shot for over 200 days and is presently in post-production.
