Atlee to kick off action-packed schedule of Raaka featuring Rashmika Mandanna, Allu Arjun in September

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; August 30, 2026)

Filmmaking rarely goes entirely to plan, but the makers of the sci-fi actioner Raaka are powering ahead despite a possible month-long delay following Rashmika Mandanna’s hip injury during dance rehearsals for the Atlee-directed film. The team is now gearing up for a major schedule next month, with high-octane action sequences featuring Mandanna and Allu Arjun, alongside Malayalam actor Aishwarya Lekshmi.

A source close to the production reveals, “Allu Arjun will be playing a triple role in Raaka — one as a divine warrior, another with negative traits, [while the third is still under wraps] — the character will span three different timelines in different avatars. Deepika Padukone, who has wrapped up her part, plays a pregnant woman in the Puranic Vedic era. Rashmika will play Deepika’s protector who is crucial in her fight for survival, while Janhvi Kapoor is said to play a tribal girl.”

The source adds that Lekshmi’s character will have grey shades. The sci-fi film will move across three timelines, featuring “wild beasts, exotic new creatures and species”, informs the source.

“A massive set is also being built at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad for a September schedule, where the makers will shoot the interval block, featuring Arjun in elaborate action sequences.”

After Mahesh Babu's look gets leaked, S S Rajamouli amps up security in Hyderabad ahead of Varanasi’s shoot

After Mahesh Babu's look gets leaked; SS Rajamouli amps up the security in Hyderabad ahead of Varanasi’s shoot

Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; November 17, 2025)

On November 15, S S Rajamouli finally let the audience into the grand world that he has been quietly building, as he unveiled the title of his next, Varanasi, at an event in Hyderabad. While the three-minute-plus teaser of the Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer has expectedly made headlines, the filmmaker is already focusing on the film’s next leg.

mid-day has learnt that a month-long schedule will kick off at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad next week. Heightened security measures and caution will drive the stint as the unit will film the climax.

Insiders say that Babu’s look being leaked hours before the official reveal left Rajamouli disappointed. It has made him bullish about keeping further details tightly under wraps. An insider from the production unit says, “The film will release in 2027 and all details will have to be guarded until then.”

As a result, the makers are tightening on-ground protocols in the next leg. A source reveals, “Many departments, including costume and hair, won’t be allowed near the core shooting area. Only 100 people of the 400-member team will be allowed. A no-phone policy for the crew is in place. Rajamouli sir wants absolute secrecy.”

Ajay Devgn to kick off next schedule of Bholaa in Hyderabad with a high-octane multi-car chase sequence

Catch me if you can, says Ajay Devgn

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; June 23, 2022)

Ajay Devgn headed to Hyderabad where he will wrap up Drishyam 2 by the weekend. But there’s little respite for the actor, who will immediately dive into the world of Bholaa. Sources say that director Dharmendra Sharma has lined up a seven-week schedule of the actioner at the Ramoji Film City.

“The Bholaa schedule will kick off on June 28, with the team filming a high-octane, multi-car chase sequence. The set-piece has been designed by action choreographer Ramazan Bulut. It will see gangsters, in a fleet of cars, chasing Bholaa, who is taking cops to the hospital, in a truck. After the gangsters catch hold of him, a hand-to-hand combat follows,” reveals a source. The director intends to can almost all the action sequences in this leg.

Bholaa, an official adaptation of Tamil hit Kaithi (2019), sees Devgn as an ex-prisoner, who is keen to be reunited with his daughter, but is persuaded by the cops to help them out for a night. Tabu plays a pivotal part in the adaptation, written by Sandeep Kewlani and Aamil Keeyan Khan. “Tabu will soon join the Hyderabad stint,” adds the source. When mid-day reached out to the film’s team, the spokesperson confirmed the news.

Crowd of 40,000 invited for the trailer launch of Radhe Shyam

Fanfare for Prabhas

Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; December 22, 2021)

Post the Baahubali franchise, Prabhas has become a pan-India superstar. To honour the fans’ love for the actor, the makers of Radhe Shyam are hosting a grand trailer launch of the Prabhas-starrer. While the initial plan was to launch the trailer virtually, on the behest of the south star’s fans, plans were altered.

A source close to the project reveals, “Prabhas’s fans reached out to the producer of the film and requested an [in person] meeting with the actor during the trailer launch. The makers are now holding a grand event for his fans in Hyderabad at Ramoji Film City on December 23.”

Prabhas, who was last seen in Saaho (2019), has had no releases or public appearances in two years owing to the pandemic. Fans have been eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of their favourite hero for long. “Close to 40,000 fans from all over India will be attending the event, following all the COVID protocols. Only people with double vaccination certificates will be allowed entry for the event. An enormous set is being constructed at an open ground at the Ramoji studios,” says the source, adding that temperature checks, sanitisers and masks will be compulsory.

Directed by Radha Krishna Kumar, the film is set against the backdrop of Europe in the 1970s. Prabhas, who plays the role of Vikramaditya — a palm reader, is paired opposite Pooja Hegde for this romantic drama.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan kicks off final leg of Ponniyin Selvan in Hyderabad; Mani Ratnam lines up war sequence

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; August 6, 2021)

Mani Ratnam is making brisk progress on 'Ponniyin Selvan'. After a short stint in Puducherry, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Jayam Ravi and others have apparently commenced the final schedule of the period drama in Hyderabad. A set of a huge fortress has been constructed on a hillock at Ramoji Film City, where Vikram’s character — Aditya Karikalan — will lead a war.

“Vikram has already shot a crowd sequence. Over the next few days, Mani sir will shoot some intense scenes with Aishwarya, Karthi, Trisha and Jayam, and a song with the entire cast. Post that, he will film the Chola expedition that sees Karikalan defeat the Pandya king, Veerapandyan,” reveals a trade source.

Envisaged in two parts, the magnum opus will trace the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who became Emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Rai will be seen in a double role as princess Nandini, and her mother, queen Mandakini Devi. “Nandini manipulates her husband, leading to the downfall of the Chola empire.” The source adds that some portions will be shot in Tamil Nadu and other regions across India.

Goa and Telangana under lockdown; what’s the next move for Bollywood and Television producers?

The shoots of Adipurush and Shabaash Mithu are in limbo

With lockdowns announced in Goa and Telangana, makers of Adipurush, Shabaash Mithu play the waiting game; TV producers seek new locations for shoot
Mohar Basu, Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; May 15, 2021)

The past four weeks haven’t been easy on film and television producers. After the Maharashtra government imposed a junta curfew on April 15, some producers called off their shoots while several others promptly moved base to Goa, Hyderabad and Silvassa to continue filming their projects. Now, with a lockdown announced in the beach state and Telangana, it’s a déjà vu moment of the worst kind for the makers.

The unit of Taapsee Pannu-starrer Shabaash Mithu was Hyderabad-bound in April. “A few days into the shoot, the production found it too risky to work amid the rising cases, even though they were in a bio-bubble. One of their gravest concerns was the fragile healthcare infrastructure in the city, so they returned to Mumbai by April-end,” says a unit hand.

The makers of Adipurush are at their wits’ end. The team, including Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon, were expected to leave for the south Indian city in the second-half of May. A source from the project reveals, “Director Om Raut had drawn up a plan where not more than 20 people would be required on set at any given time as he would shoot, using CGI, at Ramoji Film City. But with the lockdown brought into effect in Telangana, the makers will take a call after two weeks.”

Goa that was reeling under the pressure of television shoots, including Apna Time Bhi Aayega and Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin, is finally breathing easy. “There were 13 serials, three web shows and three films being shot,” says Sandeep Natwarlal Kotecha, a line producer in the state. He rues that illegal shoots had become rampant in the past few weeks. “Around 25 units were filming without procuring the necessary permission. The work was halted after they were caught.”

No sooner were the restrictions imposed in the beach state last week than the crew of the Star TV show, Ghum Hai..., flew down to Hyderabad. “The Andhra Pradesh government has yet to issue a lockdown. So, the unit is continuing the shoot of their own accord in a bio-bubble,” says a source.

Even as the team of Mehndi Hai Rachne Waali, currently stationed in Hyderabad, figures out the way forward, creator Sandiip Sikcand says he is unfazed about the hiccup as they have a bank of episodes. “We’re looking at options in Gujarat and Chandigarh.” Meanwhile, industry sources indicate that Daman will become the next shooting hub.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan begins work on Mani Ratnam's historical drama Ponniyin Selvan

As she completes 24 years in movies next week, Aishwarya reunites with her first director-mentor Ratnam to begin work on historical drama Ponniyin Selvan
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; January 9, 2021)

The universe has perfect timing, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will vouch for it. As the actor completes 24 years in the movies next week, she finds herself again under the tutelage of the man who started it all for her - Mani Ratnam. She began shooting for the auteur’s next, Ponniyin Selvan, at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad from January 6. To be developed in two parts, the period drama offers a retelling of the early days of Arulmozhi Varman before he became the great Chola emperor.

“It was a warm reunion for Aishwarya and Mani sir as they met after over a year. Five massive sets, replicating the 10th century architectural style of the Chola empire, have been designed by Thotta Tharani at the studio. Mani sir has charted out a two-month schedule as he plans to complete a major chunk of the movie,” says a source from the set, adding that the filmmaker had completed two stints before the pandemic.

Rai kicked off the shoot with a dramatic scene with co-star Sarath Kumar. “He plays Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, the chancellor and treasurer of the Chola kingdom, while Aishwarya portrays Princess Nandini, his beautiful and manipulative wife. She will be seen in a double role as she also plays Nandini’s mother Mandakini Devi.” Vikram and Trisha, who play pivotal roles, will join the unit soon.

Following extensive research, Rai’s stylist Eka Lakhani and makeup team have created looks that are true to the milieu. “She’ll wear her hair to the side in an elaborate updo, complete with chunky gold jewellery, a waistband, and a statement headgear. As Mandakini Devi, she will sport a de-glam look.” The actor is simultaneously rehearsing for a dance number that will be filmed next month. Ratnam’s studio, Madras Talkies, confirmed the news of the shoot.

Rajinikanth’s Annaatthe shoot halted after four crew members test positive for Coronavirus

BOMBAY TIMES (December 25, 2020)

The shoot of Rajinikanth’s Annaatthe, which was underway at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, was stopped after four members of the team tested positive for Coronavirus.

The production house tweeted that Rajinikanth underwent a COVID-19 test and has tested negative. Even while there is speculation that the actor might return to Chennai, we hear that he has chosen to isolate himself in Hyderabad. Originally, he was supposed to return to Chennai on December 28.

The shoot of the film, which had previously been halted due to the lockdown following the Coronavirus pandemic, had resumed on December 15, and Rajinikanth had joined the shoot on the same day. Nayanthara and Keerthy Suresh, too, were part of this schedule.

Given the actor’s medical history, the production house was said to have strictly implemented the standard operating procedures set by the government for film units. This halting of the shoot is a setback for the team as Rajinikant had plans to wrap up the shoot by mid-January, and focus on his party’s campaign for upcoming state elections.

Rajinikanth is back in action; resumes the shoot of Annaatthe

Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 15, 2020)

Mirror (October 10) had earlier reported that the makers of Rajinikanth’s upcoming film, Annaatthe, had decided to push forward the final schedule at the last minute keeping in mind the safety of the veteran actor during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. They were to start shooting in Hyderabad from October 23 and work on a massive set had started at Ramoji Film City. Now, almost two months later, they have resumed shooting with a 45-day schedule at the same location. Along with Rajinikanth, Nayanthara who plays his wife and Keerthy Suresh, his sister, will be filming the post interval scenes. “It will be an intense final leg with lots of action and drama. The entire first half is already in the cans,” revealed a source close to the development.

While the producers of this Siva directorial did suffer some monetary losses due to the delay, they are confident that Rajini’s return to the screen after a year-and-a-half will bring in the crowds. Meanwhile, apart from the government prescribed SoPs, the producers have gone for a complete indoor schedule with strict bio-bubble protocols. Shooting will be over by January and they are targeting an April 2021 release around the Tamil New Year.

On December 12, Rajini brought in his 70th birthday in Chennai, following which he flew to Hyderabad to resume work. He is expected to announce his full-time entry into politics on December 31. His birthday cake read, “Now or Never”.

With Bhuj: The Pride Of India and Mayday, Ajay Devgn to shoot for two back-to-back films in Hyderabad

Ajay Devgn in Bhuj: The Pride of India
Actor has resumed shooting at Ramoji Rao Film City; flies with his next directorial from Dec 11
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 25, 2020)

Since the last eight months, Ajay Devgn has been managing the home front and looking after son Yug as wife Kajol flew off to Singapore in August to be with their daughter Nysa, who is schooling there. The actor used the time to lock the script of his next directorial, along with a couple of outside productions. He finally took off to Hyderabad last week to resume work on Bhuj: The Pride Of India from Tuesday at Ramoji Film City. He will be filming for almost two weeks till it’s a wrap for the patriotic war period drama.

“From December 11, Ajay jumps on to his directorial, Mayday, which reunites him with Amitabh Bachchan after almost eight years, with his De De Pyaar De co-star, Rakul Preet Singh, as his co-pilot. They will be shooting nonstop till January-end,” informed a source close to the development, adding that the edge-of-the-seat aerial drama will be shot indoors with a lot of visual effects. “Rakul will join the shoot from mid-December and the entire team will be stationed together in Hyderabad in a bio-bubble.”

The Hyderabad schedule will be followed by another one in Mumbai from January where Bachchan will be joining the team. It’s a prep-heavy film and the team has erected multiple sets in Hyderabad, under the supervision of their captain, Ajay. The film’s title is an internationally recognised distress signal used by pilots and sailors in case of a life-threatening emergency.

“After Mayday, Ajay is expected to resume work on the Syed Abdul Rahim biopic, Maidaan. While a lot of the film has already been shot, some football scenes are pending and should be shot in Mumbai where a football stadium will be recreated. “The film involves several global players as part of international football teams and an exact schedule will be chalked out once there is clarity on overseas travel protocol,” shared the source.

Directed by Amit Sharma, the sports drama will showcase the golden era of Indian football when we won gold at the Asian Games in 1951 and ’62, and also reached the semifinals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The film kicked off in August 2019 with Ajay as the team coach, Rahim.

Just before the lockdown Ajay had completed his part in S S Rajamouli’s period drama, RRR in Hyderabad. It features Jr NTR and Ram Charan in the lead with Alia Bhatt.

Sources say Ajay Devgn, who plays Indian Air Force officer in Bhuj: The Pride Of India, has resumed shoot in Hyderabad after an eight-month break
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; November 25, 2020)

Ajay Devgn made the most of the lockdown, reading scripts and conceptualising his directorial venture, Mayday. Now, after an eight-month break, the actor retraced his steps to a film set as he resumed the shoot of Bhuj: The Pride Of India in Hyderabad yesterday. "Considering major portions of the war drama were filmed well before the lockdown, the makers have charted out a 10-day schedule, following which they can call it a wrap. A set has been erected at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, and the team will adhere to the on-set guidelines during the stint," reveals a source.

Set during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, the period drama sees Ajay Devgn play Indian Air Force Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, who reconstructed the IAF airbase in Bhuj with the help of Sunderben Jetha Madharparya — essayed by Sonakshi Sinha — and 300 local women. Sanjay Dutt, who plays a civilian who helped the Indian forces during the war, is expected to join the unit today. The source adds, "After spending the past few weeks in Dubai with his family, Sanjay has returned to India. He has about three to four days' work on the film." The Abhishek Dudhaiya-directed venture will have its digital premiere on Disney+ Hotstar.

mid-day reached out to Devgn's team, who confirmed the report of the film's final schedule.

RRR: Alia Bhatt to join Ram Charan and Jr NTR from November

Alia Bhatt
S S Rajamouli’s ambitious multilingual period drama resumed shooting from Monday, October 5, in Hyderabad; will continue over the next two months
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 7, 2020)

Mirror was the first to report (July 24) that S S Rajamouli is planning a two-day test shoot of his upcoming period drama, RRR: Rise Roar Revolt, to take the crew of his film through the SoPs and avoid complications on the set when the actors are around. Days after the report, Rajamouli and his family tested positive for Coronavirus, hitting plans for a six. The filmmaker and his family, including writer-father K V Vijayendra Prasad, fought the virus, and two months later, on October 5, he kicked off a marathon schedule.

Since RRR is a period drama set in the 20th century, the makers had recreated the then Delhi in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. All through the lockdown, this expensive set was standing vacant in the studio. When the maker decided to resume work, it was carefully sanitised.

“The team will be shooting for almost two months straight at the studio and the crew will be quarantined together. The two leads, Jr NTR and Ram Charan, who play real-life freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, will be shooting off and on. There will be plenty of drama, dance, romance and of course, confrontation between the two heroes,” informed a source close to the production.

Alia Bhatt will join the team from the first week of November and will be stationed there till the shoot ends. The actress is paired with Ram Charan and plays Sita, who has a significant part in the ideological fight between the two heroes. “She is currently shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi in Mumbai and after wrapping that up, will jump from one era to the next. She is looking forward to making her foray into Telugu cinema with this film, and has been learning the language with a local tutor as she wants to dub her own lines,” the source added.

RRR is touted to be one of the most ambitious pan-India films currently on the floors. It will be released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, besides Telugu. It features Ajay Devgn in an extended cameo, playing the role of a nationalist and the leading pair’s guru in their early years. He’s already completed his part.

The period drama was gearing up for a January 8, 2021, opening. However, due to the Coronavirus-triggered pandemic, the release has been pushed to next summer.

John Abraham-Emraan Hashmi's Mumbai Saga to now be shot in Mumbai

Emraan Hashmi in Mumbai Saga
Initially set to shoot John Abraham-Emraan Hashmi's Mumbai Saga in Hyderabad in July, director Gupta calls off-plan in light of rising COVID cases; hopes to resume work on August 15 in the city
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; July 17, 2020)

Sanjay GuptaIn June, Sanjay Gupta had told mid-day that he planned to film the last leg of Mumbai Saga from July 15 at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. The director had not only charted out the schedule but also hand-picked a crew of 30, including lead actors John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi, for the shoot. However, with most cities across India reporting a sharp spike in Coronavirus cases in the past month, Gupta has had to take the tough decision of calling off the Hyderabad stint.

The director informs that he took the call after a discussion with his leading men and the co-producer during a work trip to Mumbai last week. "The country recorded 30,000 cases in a single day. Moreover, the World Health Organisation's [WHO] statement about the possibility of the virus being airborne was alarming. It stated that the virus can remain in the air in crowded closed spaces. Of the 14-day shoot that I had planned, we were to film at three indoor sets for 10 days. That would have posed a risk. We wanted to shoot in Hyderabad, but now it's as unsafe as Mumbai. So, we might as well do it in our city," says Gupta from his Khandala home.

Now, the filmmaker hopes to revisit the universe of the crime saga by August 15, but admits the schedule could be pushed further. "John, Emraan and the rest of us were kicked about shooting [in Hyderabad], but we can't do so by putting everyone's health at risk. John was to finish the pending work on Mumbai Saga before moving on to his next. But with cases on the rise, we decided it would be best to take stock of the situation after a month. We will try to procure permission to shoot from August 15, and are eyeing three studios — Mehboob, Essel and Film City. [Given the current situation] the dates are tentative."

If my mom spends too much time at home, she’d want me to get married-Abhimanyu Dassani

Abhimanyu Dassani on the USP of talent, being the driving force behind mom Bhagyashree’s comeback and why both his upcoming films will only release in theatres
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 8, 2020)

If not for the Coronavirus-triggered lockdown, Abhimanyu Dassani’s second film, Nikamma, would have released in June. But a firm believer in ‘everything happens for a reason’, the actor used the downtime to acquire new skills.

“I learnt lathi, an Indian form of martial art, by watching videos online. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to showcase it in an action film. I also worked on voice modulation as I like to change my voice as per the role. I don’t even have the same voice I did during my debut, Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota,” he says, adding that he also wrote a script and hopes to be a part of it in a few years.

The actor says that he was adjusting to the lockdown, but it’s getting a bit much now. “My mom (actress Bhagyashree) was happy that I was spending time at home. But now, even my family has had enough of me,” he laughs, adding that his cooking skills have been a saviour. “I cook once every two days, and mom really enjoys it. She doesn’t tell me to cook, but just says, ‘I want to eat pasta today,’ and that is my cue,” Abhimanyu gushes. Bhagyashree is making an acting comeback with Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivi and the actor informs that he was the driving force behind it. “She is good at what she does and this is the time when talent is getting noticed. You can look like me and still get lead roles. Also, if she spends too much time at home, she’d want me to get married,” he laughs.

About his part in Nikamma, Abhimanyu says, “It’s a coming-of-age action-comedy about a carefree boy who realises the responsibilities he has to take on for his family.” Five days of shoot is pending for the film, with two scenes and a promotional song. Many filmmakers are heading to Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad to resume shoots. Will the Nikamma team follow suit? “Who would do a 14-day quarantine for a five-day shoot? It’s better to wait for two weeks and complete it in Mumbai,” he responds, adding that both Nikamma and his next, Aankh Micholi (a family comedy revolving around a wedding), will wait for a theatrical release. “It feels good to have the producers’ confidence in our work. These are the types of movies you’d like to watch in theatres. Good family comedies haven’t come out in a while, and there is nothing releasing before Aankh Micholi this year,” he asserts, confident that theatres in India will open by Diwali.

Abhimanyu is all praise for Nikamma co-star Shilpa Shetty, hailing her as “a guardian, both on and off screen”. “She helped me mould myself into a new genre, worked out with me every day and even monitored what I ate during the Lucknow shoot. I have made a friend for life,” he smiles. Abhimanyu, who misses playing football in the rain, admits that he wants to do a sports film. “The dedication, sacrifice and discipline required to be a sportsperson, is unparalleled. I’d jump at the opportunity of doing one. I am even willing to wait outside filmmakers’ offices,” he insists, adding, “Unfortunately, I don’t look like Bhaichung Bhutia or Sunil Chhetri, but I would love to do a film on football. Even Virat (Kohli) has had an amazing journey, or maybe Dhanraj Pillay, although I don’t have long hair.”

Shoot of Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi to resume from mid-July?

Alia Bhatt to resume shoot for her mafia act in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, based on Hussain Zaidi’s book
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; June 28, 2020)

Following the guidelines of the Guild, a few filmmakers are determined to kickstart pending shoots. Sanjay Gupta has decided to fly down about 30 crew members to Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City to complete the patchwork on the John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi-starrer Mumbai Saga. Meanwhile, sources inform that shooting for Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi is set to resume in the latter half of July. Helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film’s set in Mumbai’s Film City has been lying unused since the Coronavirus lockdown was announced in March.

Adhering to the current regulations, the makers are prepping for a controlled and limited shoot environment. A source informs, “Thirty per cent of the film’s shoot remains. A part of the film’s set is standing in Film City and will probably be the only venue for the remaining shoot. With work in the post-COVID world moving slowly, the team is looking for a month-long schedule to wrap up the project by August end.”

Based on a chapter in Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the film is Bhatt’s first collaboration with Bhansali.

A period drama set in the 20th century, the film features Jr NTR and Ram Charan as real-life Indian freedom fighters, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju. Buzz is, Ajay plays a nationalist and the duo’s guru in their early years.

“Ajay has shot for around 10 days at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where Delhi from the 1900s was recreated. He appears in the flashback scenes,” revealed a source close to the development, adding that several Bollywood actors were in the running for the role, but Ajay was the unanimous choice. “Rajamouli paid a tribute to him in Makkhi and the two have been good friends since. Ajay gave the nod within minutes of the narration. Though it is an extended cameo, his track will remind one of his National Award-winning performance in The Legend Of Bhagat Singh and sets the tone for the drama involving the two leads.”

The period drama also features Alia Bhatt in a pivotal role. The actress was gearing up to start shooting in April, but the Coronavirus-induced pandemic has hit all plans for a six. She plays Sita and has a significant part in the ideological fight between Jr NTR and Ram Charan. “Alia has been prepping all this while, even learning Telugu with a local tutor to understand the nuances of her character better,” the source informed, quick to add that RRR will be among the films Alia will start once she decides to get back on the set. “Around 25 per cent of the shoot still remains. With Ramoji Film City and other studios in Hyderabad opening up for shoots, Rajamouli is expected to resume work as soon as SoPs are in place. Given the scale, it’s a difficult film to shoot and the makers are exploring different options. They are planning a two-day test shoot in Gandipet without the lead actors later this week.”

RRR is being touted as one of the most ambitious pan-India films on the floors. It was scheduled to release on January 8 but now is expected to arrive only in the summer of 2021. “The team is figuring a release towards April end, like Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which was unveiled on April 28, 2017. Of course, this would depend on when the shoot resumes and how long post-production takes.”

Actors need to have faith in the us. We have assured them that we will look after them-Sanjay Gupta

Even as state government allows shoots, Mumbai Saga director charts out a plan to film the last leg of John Abraham-Emraan Hashmi starrer in Ramoji Film City

Emraan Hashmi in Mumbai Saga; (below) John AbrahamNestled in his Khandala home, director Sanjay Gupta is charting out the final schedule of Mumbai Saga that will kick off in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, next month.

With filmmakers gradually planning to resume shoots in Mumbai, the director had initially considered giving finishing touches to the John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi-fronted crime thriller in the city. "But shooting here is way too risky. Public transport hasn't opened up completely yet, so it's impossible to bring the crew to the set daily. This is why T-Series [producer] and I have zeroed in on Ramoji Film City, which is a self-sufficient studio with lodging facilities. We will have our unit tested before flying down," explains Gupta.

The filmmaker, who plans to charter a plane to Hyderabad, has zeroed in on the 30-member crew, including leading men Abraham and Hashmi. "We have 10 to 12 days' work left on the film, including shooting two songs and a portion of the climax."

Gupta agrees that the songs as well as action scenes will have to be reimagined, given the restrictions on the use of background artistes. "Minimising is the way forward on the songs. Rajeev Surti [choreographer] and I are reducing the number of people we can have in the frame and reworking the dance sequences. One of the songs is similar to Ganpat [Shootout At Lokhandwala, 2007]. We have a patchwork shoot with John, Prateik Babbar and Gulshan Grover. Here too, we will eliminate the [background] fighters and keep it focussed on the actors."

Ask him if the actors are comfortable going back to shoot, and Gupta states, "Actors need to have faith in the director and the producer. We have assured them that we will look after them and take precautions. John and Emraan are looking forward to the shoot. We hope to start working on July 15."

Hyderabad, Vizag become new shoot hubs for Bollywood?

Suresh Babu, Rana Daggubati reveal A-list filmmakers want to rent their studios, which also offer accommodation, equipment, production services
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 18, 2020)

Bhushan Kumar confirmed to Mirror (June 11) that next month, the Mumbai Saga team will head to Ramoji Rao Film City in Hyderabad, with actors John Abraham, Emraan Hashmi and Suniel Shetty, among others, to wrap up its shoot. On Tuesday, he announced that another John-starrer, Satyameva Jayate 2, will roll in August, even though they have yet to fix the location.

Meanwhile, veteran producer and studio owner Suresh Babu informs that he’s been approached by several Bollywood filmmakers to rent out their three studios, two in Hyderabad and one in Vishakapatnam, for shoots.

“Producers want their team isolated together during shoots to mitigate risk of infection. When you are filming in your city, you’d want to return home to your family, which is why makers are looking at locations outside the state,” he reasons, pointing out that they wrapped up a small-budget Telugu film at Ramoji a few days ago.

On the makers who have reached out to him, he says, “My son Rana (Daggubati) is close to Sajid (Nadiadwala) and Karan (Johar). If they need anything, as studio owners we will go out of our way for them. This is not the time for balance sheets but to help the fraternity move forward.”

Rana adds that they are ready to welcome filmmakers from across the country. “Shoots for TV and web shows have already begun according to government guidelines and several more will kick off in the next few weeks. Around next month, we should see some Hindi films readying for shoot across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh,” he shares.

The actor points out that between the three studios, they have 50-55 acres of land to erect sets and standing sets, along with a lake and in Vizag, a picturesque ocean nearby. “The studios offer end-to-end solutions, from accommodation to shooting, for which equipment including cameras can be rented, and post-production work. We have fully functional editing and dubbing rooms, recording studios and VFX facilities. Even in-house technicians are available,” Rana informs.

With Bollywood producers moving in, won’t Telugu film shoots get affected? “The big Telugu films are yet to take a call but even if Ramoji fills up, we can quickly set them up at other studios in Hyderabad,” Suresh Babu assures.

One of the most disputed guideline in Maharashtra is that actors over 65 are not allowed to resume work. In Andhra and Telangana, they have left the call to them. “If an actor needs to finish a shoot, they can come quietly and do it quickly. There won’t be officials monitoring every shoot,” Suresh Babu reasons. But with cases going up in Maharashtra, aren’t they worried? “I have a wedding coming up in my family and I am concerned on a personal level. But as a city and state, we are happy to host filmmakers from across the country,” says Suresh Babu.

The groom-to-be points out that it’s mandatory for the whole unit to be tested before shooting starts and PPE kits and sanitisation is compulsory. “We will keep units isolated during schedules, with medical support on the set. We are following a Comprehensive Sanitation Protocol Solution as outlined by the MHA guidelines and using formulations that are more effective than regular disinfectants. We are also adopting smartphone-based technologies to manage meetings, resources and inventory. We are confident of providing a safe environment for work,” Rana adds.

John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi's Mumbai Saga among the first films to resume shoot post lockdown

Their gangster drama, among first films to emerge from lockdown, gearing up for 12-day schedule in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City in July
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 11, 2020)

Following the Coronavirus outbreak, which led to a nationwide lockdown, the shooting schedule and release dates of many films got hit for a six. Sanjay Gupta’s gangster-drama, Mumbai Saga, fronted by John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi, with Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Gulshan Grover, Rohit Roy and Prateik Babbar, was nearing completion and targeting a June release when work came to a halt. The team was shooting an action-packed confrontation at a real location in Mumbai when they hit the Covid-19 roadblock. Now, Mirror has learnt that the Bhushan Kumar-Anuradha Gupta production is going to be among the first films to get back to action next month. After getting the go-ahead from the Telangana government in-sync with the guidelines laid down by the Producers Guild of India and the state, Gupta will take off to Hyderabad with his actors soon to complete the shoot.

“Yes, we are planning to shoot in Ramoji Rao Film City as they have all the facilities and equipment required, including an in-house crew and technical staff, along with hotels for the team from Mumbai. It’s all contained within the studio premises and that cuts down on the risk,” Gupta confirmed.

Ten-12 days of work on the film remains, for which the entire ensemble cast is required to be present. Gupta informs that all the actors have reacted positively to the development. “They have all worked really hard on the film and are happy to finish it on time so that we can present it to the audience,” said director Gupta, assuring that “the well-being of the team is paramount.”

During the lockdown, the team has been working from home on the visual effects and editing. “Yes, we’ve been working in a limited way, but we still need around four months, from the time we complete the shoot to lock the final print,” admits Gupta, who has previously directed several gangster dramas, including Kaante, Musafir, Shootout At Wadala, and written Shootout At Lokhandwala. His next is based on a real incident, with Emraan playing a cop and John a gangster from the ’80s and ’90s, and narrates the story of how Bombay became Mumbai. “It’s a commercial action entertainer and the audience will get their paisa vasool,” he promises.

Meanwhile, Bhushan is happy that his team is gearing up to take the multi-starrer back on the floors. “It’s a very difficult time for the industry, but with the government’s support and approval, we can look at completing our films. I am grateful to the Telangana government for agreeing to let us fly our cast and crew to Ramoji Rao Film City to shoot,” stated the producer, who is currently working out the safety measures which would be followed during the shoot. “The health of everyone working on the project is our foremost concern. I am happy our supportive cast and crew have agreed to shoot next month,” he concludes.

While Maharashtra government allows to resume shoots, Bollywood will take time to go back to set again

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; June 11, 2020)

While the national Coronavirus lockdown began on March 25, Bollywood filmmakers had voluntarily stalled all their shoots by March 17, owing to safety concerns. Production and studio offices, too, pulled down shutters. The Maharashtra government’s resolution to commence shoots, which arrived on May 31, filled the industry with hope. However, before the units go back on the floors, there are a lot of logistics to be worked out, which, most filmmakers say, will be a humongous task. To begin with, it’s too early to say whether most actors will be comfortable stepping out to work right away. There is also the responsibility of ensuring that every unit follows the health and safety regulations. Apart from that, the onset of monsoon in Mumbai calls for another level of planning.

Before the lockdown, films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Prithviraj, Atrangi Re, Nikamma, Mumbai Saga, Maidaan and Gangubai Kathiawadi were underway. Some films had just a few days of shooting left, but others had only reached the halfway mark.

‘SHOOTS WON’T COMMENCE BEFORE JULY’
Ashok Dubey of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) told BT, “We recently had a conversation with the Cine And TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA). There is no clarity over the insurance cover for workers and their safety on sets. Their outstanding dues, too, have to be cleared. We have scheduled a meeting with the Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) to find a solution. Without any clarity on the insurance coverage, we can’t ask workers to return to work. Helmets, harnesses, gloves, masks, sanitisers and various other points mentioned in the Government Resolution (GR), too, have to be complied with. We want a supervisor on every set to monitor this. Right now, there are only two film units set up in Film City — Gangubai Kathiawadi (starring Alia Bhatt) and Bosco Martis’ next. These could be among the ones to commence shooting. The question is, are stars ready to come out? I don’t see film shoots commencing before July.”

‘WE SHOULD NOT RUSH INTO ANYTHING’
Amit Ravindernath Sharma, director of Maidaan, said, “We had finished about 55 per cent of the film by March. We have football matches left to shoot, and for those, we had built a huge set in Madh Island. We had done a lot of groundwork, including erecting rooms and setting other amenities, which will have to be dismantled now since the rains have arrived. Depending on the condition of the turf, we will start work on the set post monsoon.”

Filmmaker Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, starring Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani, was underway in Lucknow when the pandemic struck. He said, “We will have to go back to Lucknow to shoot, because there needs to be continuity. Right now, I can’t put a date on when my film will start rolling again.”

Meanwhile, Sanjay Gupta, who has a few days of work left on Mumbai Saga, starring Emraan Hashmi and John Abraham, said, “Hopefully, by mid-July, we will be ready to fly out to Hyderabad. Ramoji Film City has not allocated space to us yet; they are also gearing up to start work. I will fly with a small team and hire technicians there. I’ve discussed the plan of work with the actors and everyone’s given a go-ahead.”
