Both Anurag Kashyap and Aanand L Rai have made music an integral part of their films. Amit Trivedi’s expertise with unique compositions and Eros International’s vision have made Manmarziyaan, a dream music project.
Talking about the importance of good music, producer Aanand L Rai says, “Music is the soul of Manmarziyaan. Every song has a unique flavour and provokes a different emotion. That’s what makes it so integral to the film and the script. Anurag Kashyap has a keen ear for music and Amit Trivedi understands the massive role that music plays in bringing to life a filmmaker’s vision to the big screen. We couldn’t have asked for a better team, for a musical love story of this calibre.”
Kashyap reunites with music composer Amit Trivedi, after Dev.D, which won the musician a National Award, too. Coincidentally, like the Dev.D album, Manmarziyaan also has 14 songs. Amit’s brief was to make the songs both edgy and commercial. It was an experience that Trivedi found liberating as he worked on the tunes for two years.
Talking about collaborating with Amit, Anurag says, “Amit often jokes that his highest and lowest points have been with me. But our aim together has always been to create unique sounds and make something unforgettable that will stay audiences for a long time. That’s what we tried doing with the album of Manmarziyaan, too. We took two long, tedious years and several jamming sessions along with Shellee paaji (the film’s lyricist) to present an album that has something for everyone. We hope audiences enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed working on it.”
The album has also proved to be the launchpad for new singing talent. The track Dariya has become very popular and very few people know is that it was sung by Mast Ali, who is a cop by profession in Punjab. A professor from Patiala University, Vijay Yamla, also makes his singing debut with the song Dhyaan Chand. If that wasn’t all, Amit himself has crooned a few lines in the song.
Kashyap’s films have featured quirky songs like Womaniya (Gangs Of Wasseypur) and Emotional Atyachaar (Dev.D) and Manmarziyaan continues the trend with the song Fyaar. The subject of this unconventional number deals with a heated discussion in a locker room. Interestingly, Vicky Kaushal, on whom the song is based, has sung the opening lines after Trivedi convinced the actor to get behind the microphone.
Manmarziyaan also introduces several new Punjab singers like Devendra Pal Singh, Deveshi Sahgal, Alamgir Khan, Vijay Tampa and Mast Ali, all of who were discovered and handpicked by Amit Trivedi. The music director adds, “To achieve something new, it was necessary to do something we haven’t done before. We scouted for new sounds and voices that would reflect a mixed set of emotions ranging from angst, joy, love, pain and confusion. We tried to capture different flavours by introducing new talent and each singer comes from a different walk of life. Because they aren’t trained artistes, their sounds are raw and real, just the way Anurag likes his films. It was an enriching experience working with such a talented group.”
By launching 10 songs in 10 days, the makers of the film have tried to revolutionise the way music albums are released in Bollywood. They announced the Manmarziyaan Concerts, where Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal, along with Anurag Kashyap, Amit Trivedi, his band and over 20 singers performed at key metro cities across the country.
Sunil Lulla, Managing Director, Eros International, further adds, “Music pulsates through the story of Manmarziyaan and Anurag and Amit have always made an explosive combination. The film boasts of 14 unforgettable compositions, sung by some of the country’s best voices. We wanted young audiences to wake up to these songs and then enhance the experience by listening to these amazing compositions live. As producers, we believe that this album deserved a platform of this stature.”
Manmarziyaan is presented by Eros International and Aanand L Rai. Produced by Aanand L Rai and Phantom Films, this Colour Yellow Production hits the theatres on September 14
