Initiated by The Times of
India, the campaign #NoConditionsApply aims at redefining social and
traditional conditions applicable to women across all walks of life. The
campaign hopes to bring women together in celebration and other social
gatherings, regardless of their sexual orientation, marital status, or
anything else.
United by gender, divided by society - the widows, transgenders, divorcees and single mothers often face social exclusion year after year, knowingly and unknowingly. In the garb of tradition, this discrimination gets accentuated more during festivities. This campaign is all about breaking barriers and blurring these lines, so that every woman is included in every celebration that she wishes to be a part of.
Actor par excellence Vidya Balan, known for bringing forth extraordinary lives of ordinary women on screen with her versatility and powerful performances, will participate in this campaign and will voice her views on it. The actress, who plays a housewife who turns into a radio jockey by night, in her forthcoming film Tumhari Sulu, will engage in a conversation today with Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, renowned LGBT activist, to discuss social and gender disparity and shed light on the campaign. This will be live streamed on Facebook.
TOI has launched a heartrending short film on Shindoor Khela, a tradition followed by married women only during Durga Puja, which gives us a peek into the disparity that exists in our society. The film shows how boundaries can be pushed and how true celebration of happiness necessitates inclusion of one and all.
Talking about the initiative, Vidya says, “I am happy to be associated with TOI's #NoConditionsApply campaign as it helps spread the message of social inclusion in the country. Women's rights towards education, professional growth and societal expectations have evolved over the years but we still hold on to some traditions. It is important for women across the country to come together and support their own gender and extend this campaign further by sharing the Shindoor Khela short documentary“.
Voicing her thoughts, Laxmi said, “Festivals are the time to spread cheer. But unfortunately , many of us just watch from the side-lines, because of the choices we have made in life. Festivals are the time to break boundaries and celebrate together. This is a great initiative by TOI and I'm happy to be a part of it.“
