England has retained its old
world charm with its cosy, quaint cafes, huge parks and beautiful
architecture. Home to the iconic Buckingham Palace and Tower of London,
the European country spells royalty and is spread over 130,279 square
kilometres with a population of about 54,786,300. Actress Radhika Apte
lives in the capital city of London for the most part of the year with
composer husband Benedict Taylor, when she is not shooting for films.
Over to the part-time Londoner for her account of the Queen's City:
Spring in her step
I visited London for the first time in 2011 to study contemporary dance. It was a year-and-a-half-long course. I didn't even know where to stay. What I remember most vividly of the time is the advent of spring when I moved houses. My entire life changed with it. Spring in London will always be special to me. You actually see the city transform during the season.
Movie time in Soho
London is the place I've visited the most in the world since I live there when I'm not shooting. I get to do all the things I can't do in Mumbai, like going on long walks because the weather is pleasant for the most part of the year. Summer is the best time to visit the city, though spring is beautiful too. It rarely snows in London. The city has beautiful quaint parks and I love spending time there. Tourists should also check out Soho; it has some of the most beautiful cafes. I spend a lot of time at Curzon Soho picture house watching films.
Camping out
I enjoy camping when in England. I have been to the North of Scotland a couple of times, camping with friends for about three weeks or more. All of them have been memorable road trips. The first time I went with my girlfriends. We had our tent set up and we were driving to different places. We would cook on barbecues before deciding on the next place to camp at. I drove for around 3000 kilometres. It was a tad exhausting but a lot of fun.
Gastronomic delights
London offers a wide variety of cuisines. It's ironic that I love to eat South East Asian food in London. I also like visiting pubs and cafes that serve English food. I hate shopping; I can't do it for more than an hour so I have discovered some little-known places where you get everything under one roof. I don't visit malls at all.
Hit the snooze button
The best part about my trips to London is that I can sit back and relax there. A lot of times I don't even carry my Mumbai cell phone along. I can snooze, watch movies in bed, go for walks, meet friends or simply do nothing. It's 'me' time when I'm in England and I look forward to these trips after long shoots.
Women in arms
During my last trip, I participated in a women's march. The feeling of solidarity was amazing. I wish we had more of these in India as well. I also try and take short courses while I'm there; it's important to keep learning. There's also a lot to see for those who are into popular tourist attractions like The Big Ben, Tower of London, British museum, Buckingham Palace, among others.
