Anybody can dance, but not everyone can choreograph, chuckled Farah Khan at the launch of her 12-week choreography course in collaboration with ITA School of Performing Arts last week. She shares six basic steps to become a sucessful dance director.
Know the difference: Dance and choreography are two different things, contrary to popular perception. The former is a set of moves performed by an individual, while choreography is presentation of dance and music together.
Be prepared: Don’t walk into the sets like a lost puppy. On a daily average, an approximate Rs 20 lakh is spent on shooting. So, you must plan the entire choreography in advance to have a productive day.
Don’t be a clone: It’s good to be inspired, but try to be original. That’s the only way to make a mark.
Learn editing: As a choreographer, you need to understand the technicalities of editing and how a particular set of instructions could be used to put forward a choreographed number in place.
Keep experimenting: To attain perfection, one needs to be abreast with changing trends. Don’t hesitate to try something new; play with the props, have fun with editing, experiment with unique steps and let your work do the magic.
Know your artiste: Some are good dancers, and some are not. Salman Khan can’t dance like Hrithik Roshan, but that doesn’t mean he can’t dance at all. It depends on the choreographer to work on one’s weaknesses and make them look good.
