WILL AKIRA BE A R MURUGADOSS’S 3RD CONSECUTIVE SUCCESS IN BOLLYWOOD?
A director who knows the pulse of the masses is A R Murugadoss. He has become a director to reckon with down South and has made waves in Bollywood as well. His first Hindi film Ghajini was the first film to cross the 100-crore-mark. Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty didn’t seem exciting initially but the word of mouth was super strong and it was one of the biggest hits of 2014. Now Murugadoss is back with Akira. Unlike his previous films, Akira has a female protagonist – Sonakshi Sinha – at the helm. Will this changing of gears also prove to be lucky for the director remains to be seen.
Akira besides Sonakshi also stars Anurag Kashyap, Konkona Sen Sharma and Amit Sadh with Anurag playing the baddie. The trailer is interesting and Sonakshi looks kick ass. In fact, the actress is often ridiculed for not picking up author-backed roles. But here, she’s actually playing the lead and what’s more, she gets to beat the goondas and from the promos, it looks great. Even Anurag seems great as the villain. The storyline has depth and is not run of the mill. The duration is just 140 minutes and is not as long as A R Murugadoss’s previous films.
However, the buzz is missing. The trailer came out almost 2 months ago that caught attention. But after that, the songs didn’t come out soon and even the ones that were out weren’t exciting. Hence, the buzz was affected. Due to the underperformance of last week’s A Flying Jatt, Akira is getting a wide release but the opening is going to be low. It can grow from Saturday or Friday evening if response is good. It is targeted at single screens and it has to make a mark out there to sustain. Also, it has just one week as next week, 2 significant films – Baar Baar Dekho and Freaky Ali – will take up most of the screens.
Akira, despite being a commercial space, looks like something that’s genuinely different and here’s wishing all the best to the team!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AKIRA AND WHY? DO LET ME KNOW!
