Producer Gaurang Doshi sets the record straight
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 17, 2016)
On September 9, 2016,
producer Rajeev Rajtaru told Mirror that a Contempt of Court order had
been issued against producer Gaurang Doshi for announcing his film,
Aankhen 2. Rajeev Rajtaru and Tarun Agarwal, owners of Rajtaru Studios
had further claimed that they had the complete rights to the Aankhen
sequel, and that Doshi had illegally announced Aankhen 2 with a lavish
event on August 17. Rajtaru claimed that they had sent out legal notices
to director Anees Bazmee and actors Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor,
for knowingly agreeing to be a part of this film, when the film was
supposedly in a legal tangle.
At the time, the next and reportedly final hearing between Doshi and Rajtaru was to take place on September 14 and Rajtaru had declared that if the work on Aankhen 2 was not stopped, an arrest warrant would await Doshi. Rajtaru had also stated that he would be moving the Bombay High Court with the Copyright Infringement Act. However, on September 14, all claims for a stay order on Aankhen 2 were apparently denied to Rajtaru Studios and Doshi's lawyer Bobby Malhotra sent out a press notice in which he alleged that Rajtaru Studios had been operating in a fraudulent manner. Advocate Malhotra claimed that the court order, in reality, was only a “Show Cause“ notice, and the Rajtarus had misled everyone. “Firstly, there is no contempt of court order against my client, Gaurang Doshi. There is only a 'show cause' notice issued by the Bombay High Court, which my client shall be replying to. Secondly, there have been no legal notices sent to Amitabh Bachchan or Anil Kapoor, to the best of my knowledge. Thirdly, Rajtaru claims that my client, Gaurang Doshi, was a part of the discussion in court on August 9, 2016 where he said that he had nothing to do with 'Aankhen 2' is also absolutely false because the matter was not even heard in Court on August 9. These court records and orders clearly reveal the falsehood in Rajeev Rajtaru's statements,“ Doshi's lawyer revealed to the media in his detailed statement.
Speaking to Mirror, Gaurang Doshi said that he had never sold the remake or sequel rights of his film and had instead, entered a Joint Venture (JV) with Rajtaru Studios. But when work on the Aankhen sequel did not kick off for over a year after the deal was finalized, Doshi decided to terminate their agreement in 2012.
As of today, Doshi's lawyer confirms that all the copyrights and IPR of Aankhen 2 are with Gaurang Doshi. Shooting begins in October and the film is set to release in Diwali 2017. So according to Doshi and his lawyer, Rajtaru Studios are allegedly completely out of the picture. “My film is on track, it was never stalled and there is no reason for anyone to put a stay order on it,“ Doshi said.
