Kiran Rao, film director and
wife of actor Aamir Khan, has lodged a complaint with the cyber crime
police station, stating that someone has opened a fictitious Facebook
account in her name and has been chatting with her friends and family
members.
The cyber crime police station at Bandra-Kurla complex on Saturday registered a first information report (FIR) against an unknown person for cheating by impersonation and identity theft.
Additional commissioner of police (crime) K M M Prasanna confirmed that such a complaint had been lodged but he declined to divulge any further details, saying it is a “sensitive matter“.
Kiran Rao neither responded to phone calls nor replied to to text messages sent by this correspondent.
According to sources, on Thursday, Rao submitted a written application to the cyber police, complaining that recently her friends told her about a series of chats on Facebook, which she was clueless about. Rao was surprised and she herself visited the page and found that somebody had uploaded her picture as her profile photo and impersonated as Kiran Rao. “After going through her application, we have registered an offence and have started investigation,“ said a police officer.
Indian Police Service officer-turned-lawyer Y P Singh said excessive fascination towards glamour leads to more attraction of readers. “The impersonator can be easily identified by the police from his IP address and apprehended. However, if the impersonator does mischief from outside India, it is nearly impossible to catch him and put him to trial under the provisions of the Information Technology Act or for cheating... However the actor can, in addition, file a case of civil damages against the impersonator,'' said Singh.
