Ekk Albela is a Marathi-Hindi film, a biopic on legendary actor Bhagwan Dada and majorly focuses on his experiences of making the film Albela. This could have been another Harishchandrachi Factory but falls short due to a not-so-great first half. In fact, the beginning portions are a big disappointment and Bhagwan’s scenes with Shaheen seem very superficial. Bhagwan’s rise as an actor and director is shown too quickly. The film gets interesting only when he decides to make Albela. Again, the execution is not at its best but from hereon, it makes for a great watch. The recreation of the song ‘Shola Jo Bhadke’ is quite entertaining. Not many people know what Bhagwan Dada went through when he made Albela and this film documents the struggles and the challenge. The film ends on a rocking note. Mangesh Desai is quite impressive in the lead role. Vidya Balan leaves a huge mark in a supporting role as Geeta Bali. Another actor who leaves a mark is Sahil Khan, who plays Raj Kapoor. A great find! All in all, worth watching once!
My rating - *** out of 5!
