(Crisp) Movie Review: SAIRAT by FENIL SETA

Sairat, the Marathi film that’s making waves at the box office like never before, is worth the hype and popularity. The basic premise is ordinary but Nagraj Popatrao Manjule has directed it beautifully and despite the slow narrative, the film never gets boring or dragging. And this is a feat considering that the movie is almost 170 minutes long. Some of the developments in the second half seem a bit forced and unconvincing and that takes the film slightly down. But the film rises with its final scene – it is one of the greatest endings ever! The caste politics, the rural life, the world of slums – everything has been beautifully captured and it looks straight out of life. Even the lead actors (Akash Thosar and Rinku Rajguru) in a way seem so ordinary and ‘aam aadmi’-like and it works big time. Both the actors deliver brilliant performances and their chemistry is electrifying. Ajay-Atul’s music enhances impact. The film has released everywhere in Maharashtra (and even outside in select cities) with English subtitles – go for it, in case you haven’t!
My rating - **** out of 5!
