After being married for 16
years, Farhan Akhtar (42) and his wife Adhuna Bhabani (48) have decided
to go separate ways. The two dated each other for three years before
tying the knot in 2000. The couple has two daughters, Shakya and Akira.
While issuing the statement, Farhan was extremely emotional. In the
statement, the couple said, “This is to announce that we, Adhuna and
Farhan, have mutually and amicably decided to separate. Our children
remain our priority and it is immensely important to us, as responsible
parents, that they be protected from unwarranted speculation and public
glare. We sincerely request that we are given the privacy that is
required at this time to move forward in a dignified manner.“
For the last few months, speculation was rife about cracks in their marriage. Farhan has moved out and is staying with his sister Zoya Akhtar at Sea Springs, Bandra. He is likely to move into his own apartment in the same suburb after a month or so. Adhuna and their daughters continue to stay at a close distance in their original home, Vipasana, with their pets.
Farhan has always been very proud of Adhuna's achievements, who is a celebrity hairstylist. In a lighter vein, the actor, who has been sporting different hairstyles in his movies like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Wazir, recently said, “I'm one of those who never has to worry about whether I sport long or short hair. Aud (Adhuna) is always there to make me look my best.'' The couple has also worked together over the years. Right from his directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Adhuna has styled for his films Lakshya, Don, Rock On!! and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Farhan and Adhuna Bhabani Akhtar have called it quits on their 16-year-old marriage. In a joint statement the duo announced that they have "mutually and amicably decided to separate". They further asserted that "our children remain our priority and it is immensely important to us, as responsible parents, that they be protected from unwarranted speculation and public glare". The statement ended with a sincere request "that we are given the privacy that is required at this time to move forward in a dignified manner".
The news comes in the wake of rumours of a rift after Farhan was spotted making solo appearance at social dos recently. Adhuna who has till now designed Farhan's look for all his films would promote it before the release. But this time, for Wazir, her team and she were low-key through the promotions, fanning the gossip surrounding the couple. A close friend of the stylist however insists that despite their personal differences, the couple will continue to team up professionally in future.
The 42-year-old actor-filmmaker met Adhuna, celebrity hairstylist and now the co-owner of a chain of salons, when he was scripting his directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai. They dated for three years before tying the knot in 2000. Farhan's foray in Hindi films coincided with Adhuna's who styled all the actors in the 2001 coming-of-age dramedy, featuring Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan.
In an interview to an English daily in 2012, Adhuna called herself Farhan's 'lucky charm' since he shot into the limelight after they met. Dil Chahta Hai went on to become a seminal work in contemporary filmmaking as well as in the hairstyling business, and Adhuna went on to style Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta in her husband's followup directorial, Lakshya. She has been an integral creative force of almost all of Farhan's projects since.
Adhuna, who sports a stylish bob and favours quirky silhouettes, had been described as a "star wife with a difference". Friends saw them as a "made-for-each-other couple" whose camaraderie and support for each other's professional endeavours made them special. In fact, one of them who has been travelling a lot recently, was shocked to hear about the split, dismissing it as a joke. When told that they had announced it themselves, the friend recalled how loved up they'd been with each other at Farhan's father, Javed Akhtar's 70th birthday bash in Khandala last year.
There have been incessant linkup rumours with a recent co-star and an actress he is romancing in an upcoming musical. But according to a source close to the actor, there is no "third party" involved in the break-up. "Farhan was consumed with his work and music. Adhuna was never a regular star wife but a professional with a successful and growing business of her own. The couple simply drifted apart over the years," added the source.
According to the source both dote on their daughters, 16-year-old Shakya and nine-year-old Akira, and for their sake gave their marriage one more chance, but eventually realised that it was better to go their separate ways. "Farhan moved in with sister Zoya almost a month ago and had been consulting his father how to break the news to their daughters as gently as possible."
For both Adhuna and him that was the most difficult part and once they did it, they decided to announce their decision to the world. "He's looking for an apartment and should move into his own place soon. But one thing is for sure, Adhuna and he will remain friends and their children will always be top of their minds," adds the source.
