The Revising Panel of the
CBFC (Central Board Of Film Certification), headed by Shyam Benegal, are
contemplating on making a unique change in their list of
recommendations by creating separate time slots in theatres for films
with adult content. Since the panel is keen on introducing the American
grading system of movies in India, special arrangements will be made for 'R' rated and 'NC-17' rated movies. Presently, such films are
restricted exclusively to a certain audience depending on their content.
The definition of R is Restricted and reads, 'Under 17; requires accompanying parent or guardian. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.' NC-17 - Adults Only is defined as 'No One 17 and Under Admitted. Clearly Adult. Children are not admitted.' Usually, films with graphic visuals, nudity and brutal action are issued such certificates and are released without cuts. When such movies release in India, the Censor Board makes appropriate cuts. But in many cases (for instance, Fifty Shades Of Grey) they don't hit the marquee here. Over a period of time, Indian audiences have been kept away from such strong films. Those who want to watch, do so by downloading the movies online. The members of the revising panel are unanimous in their 'no-cuts' policy. Special timings will be made in theatres to accommodate Indian and international films that come under NC-17 or R categories. Panel members hope this will also cut down piracy .
A source tells us, “The film can be screened only only at a certain time slot. Ideally, there should be separate theatres for such films but due to a lack of infrastructure here, arrangements will be made so that multiplexes and other theatres can screen them. Given the Indian mindset, such films might be rejected on the basis that they aren't commercially viable. However, the panel is still figuring out ways to make sure movies with bold content find viewers and venues.“ For the next two months, the members have been requested to remain discreet about their suggestions.
