Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar turns 93 today. The legendary actor has been accepting birthday wishes since late last night. His wife Saira Banu told us that the birthday itself would be a low-key affair to show solidarity to those affected by the Chennai floods.

Saira said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragedy. We decided not to celebrate Sahab's birthday at an inopportune time like this. My husband and I had lived in Chennai for a few years after our marriage and the city holds a special place in our hearts. We are also in touch with Suchindra Bali, son of Vyjayanthimala, whose family is based there. Thankfully, the area where they stay hasn't been hit so badly.“ The actress added they have also become quite superstitious and want to tread carefully. She explained, “We celebrated Sahab's 89th birthday with grandeur but soon after that, he fell sick. Nazar lag jaati hai so since then, it's always been a quiet family affair. His close friends are likely to come over and spend time with him.“

However, what makes the occasion special this year is the felicitation that will follow. The actor will be honoured with the Padma Vibhushan (the country's secondhighest civilian award) at home on December 13. Though the award was conferred earlier this year, he was unable to attend the ceremony in April at the Rashtrapati Bhavan owing to illness.

Saira said, “We got a call from Raj Bhavan and were informed that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will honour Dilip Sahab at home two days after his birthday. This makes it special.“
