Forty-six years after it
bagged the National Award for Best Film, director Ram Maheshwari's 1969
Partition drama, Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai, featuring the late Prithviraj
Kapoor as the patriarch, Gurmukh Singh, returns to the screen, digitally
restored in colour and dubbed in multiple languages. What’s interesting
is that it will open on the same Friday as his grandson, Ranbir
Kapoor’s Tamasha.
“We had initially planned a remake, but then realised that whether it’s a Mughal-e-Azam or a Sholay, it’s always the original film that will be remembered. Also, the Kapoors have always insisted that no one can step into the shoes of Prithviraj Kapoor,” filmmaker Rahul Mittra and head honcho of Raju Chadha’s studio and production house, told Mirror.
The original reels which were with Shemaroo Entertainment, were still usuable and the song, “Re mann Aiso Karr” composed by National Award winning composer music, S Mohinder, had the viewers in tears. While the film was being digitally colour-corrected, son of the original story and scriptwriter, Bekal Amritsari, Santok Singh, dropped by to point out that the opening sequences featured a 24-year-old-Dalai Lama and was shot at the Golden Temple. He also mentioned that Prithviraj Kapoor had never featured in a colour poster. “We immediately incorporated the Dalai Lama sequence into the trailer and created a colour poster featuring Prithviraj Kapoor,” informs Rahul.
The first teaser will be unveiled in Mumbai on November 17 with a ‘Kapoor’ celebration and a langar. Besides the family, veteran actors like Jeetendra and Dharmendra will pay a tribute to the legendary actor. Nishi, who retired after playing Prithviraj Kapoor’s daughter-in-law in the film, will be present with son, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo actor Armaan Kohli.
“The original had released on the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. Today with the growing intolerance, we thought it could revive feelings of unity and peace in Punjab. With the film being digitally restored, it's a great watch,” promises Rahul who will also be releasing it in North America, Canada, Russia and UK.
