Abhay Deol, who has been
shooting for Mudassar Aziz's cross-border love story, Happy Bhag
Jayegi, since September, was recently spotted playing cricket with kids
on the streets of Chandigarh while filming a pivotal sequence. “Abhay
plays an aspiring cricketer who is unable to follow his dream owing to
certain circumstances. Playing with kids helps him keep the memories alive. It's funny
to see a 30-year-old guy playing with kids,“ admits Aziz, adding that
the scene was canned in two days flat.
Interestingly Abhay has never played cricket in real life and doesn't know much about the game. “I had to guide him on the batting stance. I played cricket till the college level,“ says the Dulha Mil Gaya filmmaker, recounting an incident from the shoot. “Once, I called out to Abhay from the monitor, 'You have to play on the off side,' to which he responded, 'Dude I don't know what an offside means',“ laughs Aziz, adding that the 39-year-old actor is playing a character faced with a dilemma about his professional choices. Amidst all that, he falls in love, which adds to the chaos. Aziz himself remembers being conflicted about becoming a filmmaker or a cricketer as a young man. He ended up studying engineering. Buzz is, the last schedule of film will be shot in Pakistan. “We are yet to figure out the permissions. It should possibly happen by January-end,“ informs the director, adding that his team is having a blast while shooting for the film. “The camaraderie the actors share is phenomenal. All of us have come back from a sabbatical and want to give our 100 per cent to this film.“
Besides the lead cast of Abhay, Diana Penty and Ali Fazal, the film features Jimmy Shergill, Piyush Mishra and Kanwaljit Singh. “I like to call my film a comic ensemble with a dash of romance, like Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Chupke Chupke, with 10-12 principal characters,“ Aziz signs off.
