Actress Manorama passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on October 10 after a cardiac arrest followed by multi-organ failure. She was 78. The actor was survived by her son, actor Boopathy. She holds a Guinness World Record for acting in more than 1,000 films.

Born Gopishantha to Kasi Kilakudaiyar and Ramamirtham at Mannargudi in Thanjavur district, she began acting at the tender age of 12. She was spotted by actor SS Rajendran and, urged by him, joined the SSR Nataka Mandram Company and performed all over the state. She was rechristened Manorama by director Thiruvengadam and harmonist Thiyagarajan and moved to the big screen in 1958 with the Tamil film Maalayitta Mangai produced by lyricist Kavignar Kannadasan. In a career spanning six decades, she has acted in over 1,200 Tamil films, alongside MGR and Sivaji Ganesan.

Awarded the Padma Shri in 2002, she acted with five chief ministers, including Anna Durai, M.G Ramachandran, M Karunanidhi, NT Rama Rao and J Jayalalithaa. Her films include Thillana Mohanambal, Samsaram Adhu Minsaram, Singaravelan and Pudhiya Pathai, which won her the National Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Fondly called Aachi, she was also an accomplished playback singer whose charttoppers include “Madrasai Suthi Paarka Poren“ composed by Oscar winner A R Rahman.

Manorama also acted in Telugu films like Lava Kusha and popular Hindi cinema like Kunwara Baap. She also made an appearance in Malayalam films like Mauryan and Seetha Kalyanam.

Actor-politician Khushbu Sundar was distraught. “A sad day in the history of Tamil cinema...a legend has left us,“ she tweeted.

Filmmaker Soundarya Srinivasan described her as a “hugely versatile artist“ who “managed to break into the comedy genre, a tough one for women“.

In an interview to the Times of India, on being if she had regrets about her life, she stated: “I've no regrets at all. I'm blessed in this life. Even in my next birth, I want to be born as Manorama again. I want this same life, and same people around me. Most of all, I want my mom with me again.“
