Production for the first Chinese version of the international reality TV show, Big Brother has commenced, not in China, but in a former industrial factory outside Mumbai.
But Chinese viewers are being kept in the dark about the location.
Ryan Cheung, a representative of the Chinese production house said, that the decision to shoot abroad was "driven by the available experience and existing infrastructure." A team, including Rebecca De Young, who has also worked on the U.K. version for over a decade, and a crew of 400 from the Indian version of Big Brother, which will now enter its ninth season, has been brought in.
In an interesting twist to the standard format, the Chinese version of the show will be shown exclusively online, since the company claims that its video services receive an audience that is "bigger than some Chinese broadcasters," according to Cheung. "Moreover, China's youth are moving away from television to online content," he adds.
The Chinese title of this version will mean "Housemates, Let's Stay Together."
Meanwhile, the Indian adaptation of the show, Bigg Boss, which will be hosted by actor Salman Khan, is set to hit TV screens in a few weeks from now.
