Zoya Akhtar in a recent inter view to Bombay Times said, “I have figured that I am a skilled diplomat. Half your work as a director is dealing with people, so I don't have a choice.“ Directing one superstar can be enough of a challenging task for a director, but the challenge multiplies many folds when you are working with multiple big stars in your film, as you are not just directing the story, but also managing difficult egos of competitive actors at times. Yet, there are directors who have managed to not just work with many big stars at the same time, but also delivered superhits with such films, many of which have gone on to becoming cult films in Bollywood. To me, simplistically speaking, to make a successful ensemble film you need two things, one, actors who are secure about working with other actors and two, a skillful and tactful director, who knows how to manage people and make them feel comfortable as a team. While there are many many more examples of directors and films that have been successful ensembles, we list down some of our favourites. Amitabh Bachchan seems to be one of the most secure superstars, as he has been a part of the most number of ensemble cast films and interestingly, most of them went on to becoming blockbusters. Each and every director in this list starting with the greats like Yash Chopra and Manmohan Desai were all very loved directors by all the people who have worked with them. Zoya's Dil Dhadakne Do seems to have all the ingredients of a hit ensemble film. We will wait to see on this Friday if it makes the cut, as currently it does seem to be headed there.
