Priyanka Chopra, plays Kashibai, the first wife of Peshwa Baji Rao in Bajirao Mastani. She will be seen wearing the traditional Nauvari (the traditional Marathi saree, 11 meters; Peshwin style).in the film and the same have been sourced from Pune, Nashik and Nagpur.

PC plays a typical Peshwa wife, and will also wear nose rings. Since she will be dressed in the traditional attire throughout the film, stylist Anju Modi has sourced over 85 nauvaris from different cities. Says Anju, “I started work on the film in April last year. I travelled to the Ajanta and Ellora caves and visited Paithan in Aurangabad. I also visited the Shivaji Museum and made a few trips to Pune to do my own research on the clothes and jewellery. The sarees were difficult to source as those styles aren’t available now. Also, we wanted bright colours as Priyanka’s character is that of a young, confident woman.”

They chose sarees in colours like marigold yellow, fuchsia pink, rose pink, sea green, aqua blue, ivory and blood red. In terms of look, they also made sure they sourced Maratha jewellery, mostly from Pune. “We have also picked up different kind of nathnis and shelas. Shelas are an integral part of the Maratha woman’s wardrobe,” Anju says.

Working on the film was also a great experience for Anju as until now she had only worked on characters from different communities. “I had never been exposed to Maratha jewellery. Priyanka too was extremely interested and involved with the look and personally looked into her clothes,” concludes the stylist.
