National Award-winning
actor Manoj Bajpayee says he is choosy when it comes to
masala flicks. However, he is upbeat about his role as the main villain
in Boney Kapoor's Tevar, which is produced by Sanjay Kapoor, Sunil
Lulla, Sunil Manchanda and Naresh Agarwal. The actor admits that besides
liking the 'dhansu' script, he enjoyed the experience of working with
youngsters Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha.
The trailer shows Gajender Singh, the character you play, to be a colourful and lovestruck one...
Gajender Singh is the brother of a powerful minister. Despite being a criminal, he is a child at heart. After meeting Radhika (Sonakshi's character), he transforms into a true lover boy and wants to marry her. But she rejects his proposal. With Arjun's character butting in to rescue her, it becomes a love triangle.
Was it hard to adopt the Haryanvi diction in the film?
I have lived in Delhi, so getting the Western UP-Haryanvi diction wasn't difficult. The challenge was to infuse the Mathura twang in the Haryanvi flow. It was quite tough to get the right mix.
How was it working with a debutant director?
To me, Amit Ravindernath Sharma didn't seem like a debutant. He has made such game changing commercials that I'm a fan of his work. He's a stickler for perfection. I call Amit a frustrated actor. He always wants to enact the scenes while explaining. He came to the city to become an actor and from the first narration itself, I had to stop him from enacting the scenes. Seeing any version of the scene would prove to be a mind block.
How was it working with Arjun Kapoor?
Arjun is passionate about his work and opinionated. Young actors like him remind me of my youth, when every moment of work was thrilling. He usually doesn't lose his cool, it's a side he doesn't want to reveal to people. Just like I have mellowed down with experience, so will he.
Your preference for niche films is evident in your filmography. So what made you give a nod to a masala film like this?
I have always had a soft corner for niche films, where you don't get the right car or hotel and often shoot without permission. I don't touch mainstream films very easily. Only when a film like Tevar comes my way, I get excited to step into the commercial space.
Tevar, presented by Eros International and produced by Sanjay Kapoor Productions, releases January 9.
