Chenab Gandhi, once a
much-talked about project which was later aborted by Sanjay Leela
Bhansali, will finally see the light of the day. The film was first written with Harman Baweja in mind. But thereafter
other names like John Abraham, Rajeev Khandelwal, Vidya Balan and Asin
cropped up.
On September 25, 2009, Mirror reported that Bhansali and Madhu Mantena would co-produce the Rs 350 million film which would mark the directorial debut of Bhansali's assistant Vibhu Puri, with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead.
Three years after the announcement, following a rift between Bhansali and Vibhu, the project came to a standstill. Now Smita Thackeray has come on board to produce the film which will be helmed by Hawaizaada director, Vibhu Puri.
Smita who was married to Bal Thackeray's late son Jaidev, already has a film distribution company which recently distributed Fugly and The Shaukeens overseas. “I plan to produce six to seven films this year, including Chenab Gandhi, under my new banner. Everything should be finalised by January 30,“ Smita told Mirror.
The new director-producer duo have a fresh cast to play the romantic lead. “Chenab Gandhi is all about acting and from what everybody in the industry says, I think Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra are a perfect fit. I can see only these two in this set-up,“ Smita asserts.
A source close to Varun revealed that he has already read the script and has really liked it. “The narration happened a while ago,“ adds the source.
It remains to be seen if the Student of the Year and the Ishaqzaade kudi make a match of it, in reel life!
