Pooja Bhatt's 11-year marriage to Manish Makhija ends

For a while now, the
grapevine has been rampant with rumours saying that Pooja Bhatt's
marriage with actor-businessman Munish Makhija was over.
When a
source tipped us off saying that the couple, who had married in August
2003, had definitely decided to part ways, we texted the
actress-filmmaker. Within minutes of receiving our text, Pooja put up her
reply on a micro-blogging site. “To all those who care and
especially those that don't my husband Munna and me have decided to part
ways after 11 glorious years of marriage. Our split as some might call
it is amicable and we hold each other in the highest esteem for
now and forever. The reason I explain is because we are both part of the
public domain. Our friends, well-wishers and foes are free now to
speculate.''
Her father filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, once again a man known
for his candour replied to our text saying, “She lives by what I taught
her - Hang it on the trees. This game of hide and seek is silly. If
they try to pull out some skeleton from your closet, invite them to have
a closer look at our family 'graveyard'. Whatever has a beginning has
an end. Whatever is born dies. And whatever is dead also dies.“
Pooja explained that the reason why she chose to put her comment on the micro-blogging site is because she felt the need to communicate with her fans directly. “Please feel free to use my quote from the site,'' she replied to our message.

At around 4 am on Monday, Pooja Bhatt tweeted, "Time is the space between me and you..." quoting British soul singer Seal. Nine hours later, at around 1 pm, she was back on the same website, but this time the post was not as cryptic.
"To all those who care & especially those that don't, my husband Munna (Manish Makhija) and me have decided to part ways after 11 glorious years of marriage. Our split as some might call it is amicable & we hold each other in the highest esteem for now and forever (sic)," tweeted the 42-year-old actress-filmmaker.
She then added with a flash of typical Bhatt humour, "Our friends, well-wishers & foes are free to now speculate," ending the breaking news with a smiley.
When Mirror got in touch with her, Pooja refused to add to the subject, asserting that she spoke on a public platform because she wanted her fans and well wishers to hear it straight from the horse's mouth.
"I've never minced words or shied away from the truth. I am my father's daughter," she signed.
Her father, Mahesh Bhatt, was equally forthright but less reticent. Shrugging off apologies for mixing the personal with the public, he said: "Nothing is personal. I have always lived my life under the public gaze. Pooja was brave enough to proclaim the demise of an 11-year-old marriage on Twitter," he said.
When asked if his daughter had turned to him for advice, he asserted, "I was not consulted at any stage. It is a decision taken by two consenting adults."
He points out that since she was a little girl, Pooja has lived life on her own terms and continues to do so. "Some believe that marriage is an institution that lasts a lifetime, even extends to future lives. But while they may continue with a loveless union, some of us are graceful enough to admit that a relationship is not working out. Whatever is born dies and whatever is there also dies," he ended philosophically.
Pooja met Manish Makhija during the making of her directorial Paap, in which he played a small role. According to a friend of the actress, she enjoyed Munna's sense of humour.
"He said the most outrageous things, which made her laugh. She liked his absolute irreverence to rules and shared his wanderlust," informs the friend on condition of anonymity. "They would spend hours together, talking, and it was not just about movies."
On August 16, 2003, the couple got married in a Shiva temple in Goa. And while the marriage shocked some, the friend remembers Munna and Pooja as a made-for-each-other couple.
"They both liked and respected each other. They were very compatible despite being poles apart, temperamentally," he added.
However, rumours of a split have dogged the couple over the past three-four years. The friend says that the reasons for the growing distance is not clear. But he's sure of one thing. Pooja doesn't break off relationships even when she moves on.
Munna, who as Channel (V)'s Udham Singh had the world in splits, will continue to collaborate with Pooja professionally. He is reportedly arranging the music of her next film, Cabaret.
At the time of going to the press, Pooja's last tweet revealed her pain and stoic acceptance: "Staggered by the love and support displayed by intimate strangers as well as the silence from most of my friends! Love you all."
