Director Umesh Shukla comes clean about rumours that makers of recently released film PK offered him money to drop OMG
Joginder Tuteja (ABSOLUTE INDIA; December 23, 2014)
Two years after its release, OMG! Oh My God is in news again. First Rajkumar Hirani’s PK was said to be too similar to Umesh Shukla’s OMG in terms of its core plotline. Later, a further shocker came when a national daily reported that Shukla had been offered a cool sum of Rs 8 crore by Aamir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra to stop the shoot of OMG. Flabbergasted, Umesh Shukla comes clean on all rumors - which in his own words are bull*** t - making the rounds. Excerpts from his interview...
To set the records straight, were you offered Rs 8 crore by the PK team to opt out of OMG! Oh My God?
Bulls** t. Yeh faaltu ke rumours kahan se aaye hain mujhe maloom nahi. There was nothing like that. Yeh bilkul jhoot hai. These (Aamir, Hirani, Chopra) are good people, aisa kuch soch bhi nahi sakte. Such kind of rumours are always on either extremes - either totally true or a complete a figment of someone’s imagination. If this was true then it would have been good news at the time when my film was getting ready for release. It would have made for such a good read that Aamir likes the core concept of my film so much. Agar yeh news failti toh meri hi film ko faayda hota. Arrey, hum seedhe log hain, there is no filmipana in us. We are straight forward people. We just want to do a good job and give the audience some good stuff. (Writer) Abhijat (Joshi) is a good friend of mine. If he makes something then I will go and watch it. I like his work.
Didn’t you find similarities though between the two films?
I saw the film last evening (Monday) and really liked it. The whole premise is so interesting. Every performance is so good. The people involved with the film are such that I respect them and their work. I vouch for what they have to offer each time around. Jab inki film aati hai toh mann karta hai ki dekhenge, mazaa aayega.
So kitna mazaa aaya when you realised that both films had the same premise surrounding God and religion.
Aap mujhe ek baat batao, if you are making a love story then ‘I Love You’ toh bolenge hi naa! It has been said in thousands of films. When you pick the subject of God then similarities do come. Usse uski creativity ko challenge mat karo yaar. Bina baat ke hauwa mat banao. If there is a film about smugglers then the hero will kill them eventually. Agar do- teen film mein aisa hota hai toh uska issue thode hi bana doge aap? Every film is a creation in itself. Instead of nitpicking, you have to appreciate if someone is trying out something.
Unnecessary controversies nahi khadi karni chahiye.
