WILL 2014 END ON A ROCKING NOTE WITH PK?
2014 hasn’t been a great year, box office wise. Business always escalates with each passing year but in 2014, it’s not yet reached the 2013-level. Sadly, it’s said that even if PK is a big hit, the deficit won’t be covered. Nevertheless, the success of PK is important for everyone involved, including the audience, as a lot of hopes are pinned on this film. After all, it’s the return of the successful jodi of Aamir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The last time they came together with 3 Idiots, they created history. So it’s obvious that a lot is expected from PK, not in terms of commercial success but also in terms of audience satisfaction.
And as expected from an Aamir Khan film, the marketing campaign of PK has been quite unique. The promotions commenced with the unveiling of the nude poster of Aamir in August 2014. Immediately, it became the talk of the town. Some criticized the bold move of Aamir but then, it became like a ‘love-me-or-hate-me-but-you-can’t-ignore-me’ situation. The subsequent posters too helped the film be in news. Then, Anushka Sharma was introduced a week before Diwali. And then came the much awaited teaser of the film during Diwali time. It didn’t give out the plot but at the same time, it made a lot of noise. The makers then didn’t even release the theatrical trailer but they did launch the songs. Again, audiences didn’t quite understand what exactly the film is all about. The questions on everyone’s minds are – Who is PK? Is he an alien or drunkard or suffering from memory loss? Why doesn’t he blink and why are his eyes green? The promotion of this sort always works and no wonder that viewers will be going for this film in hordes to find out the answers! And also, this is a Rajkumar Hirani film who has always given social messages in an entertaining way. And that factor also is a big draw.
PK releases tomorrow which is a non-Holiday Friday but yet, it won’t be a surprise if the film makes an opening day record. Saturday and Sunday too would be huge, even if God forbid the response is not great. Thursday December 25 will again attract lot of viewers due to Xmas Holiday and hence, the evening shows on Dec 24 too would benefit. Moreover, there’s no major release for the next three weeks. Hence, if PK is a well-made film, one can well imagine how much it can collect.
However, many moviegoers have complained that the rates have been hiked by many multiplexes as well as single screens, especially in Mumbai. Even during 3 Idiots, people had raised their voice against inflated ticket prices but the film turned out to be such an ultimate ‘paisa-vasool’ product that nobody minded paying extra. If PK also is as legendary as 3 Idiots, then hopefully the complaints will stop. But somewhere, such practices need to be curbed even though Aamir always claims that he never tells exhibitors to hike rates.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE PK AND WHY? DO LET ME KNOW!
