His neo noir thriller, Miss Lovely, which explored the sleazy world of Mumbai's C-grade cinema, made it to Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section in 2012. Now, director Ashim Ahluwalia is adapting writer and noted gay activist, R Raj Rao's novel, The Boyfriend.
According to sources, the film will explore the class and caste dynamics in a relationship and will be a 'faithful' adaptation of the book which revolves around a love affair between a middle-aged male journalist and a young Dalit boy. The novel is set mostly in Mumbai and has strong traces of dark humor--a trait Ahluwalia wants to retain. Interestingly, Hansal Mehta, who directed Citylights early this year, is also working on a homosexual love story, which will feature Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao.
According to a source, the casting for Ahluwalia's film is underway. "There will be more clarity on it early next year. The screenplay is currently being polished at the Screenwriter's Lab while talks with a French production house are nearing closure".
When Mirror contacted Ahluwalia, he confirmed the news but refused to divulge any details about the project.
