When choreographer
turned-director Remo D'Souza was working on the chartbusting Disco
Deewane track in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year, he knew he wanted to
make a dance film with Varun Dhawan. “I was surprised at how
comfortable this debutant was in front of the camera. Also, he is a fab
dancer,“ Remo recalls, adding, “In ABCD, I made actors out of dancers,
but for the sequel I was sure I wanted an actor who can dance.“
The director bounced of the idea to Varun after SOTY released. He responded positively, but Remo waited to see how his second film, Main Tera Hero, performed at the box-office. “He was fabulous in the film and that's when I decided that before this guy gets too busy, I must lock him as he's the best among the young lot,“ says Remo.
He admits that had ABCD failed commercially, he wouldn't be able to get a big studio's backing for the sequel. “I would have made Part 2 anyway but I'd probably have made a small, indie film which not too many people would have watched. But the success of the original gave me access to stars and finance,“ he points out.
He insists that ABCD 2 won't look repetitive because dance as an art-form is evolving every day. “There is so much talent out there coming up with extraordinary stuff. It's difficult to keep track. Also, the film documents the real-life story of Suresh and Vernon of The Fictitious Group so 80 per cent of it is completely true,“ he reasons.
