WILL MARY KOM STORM IT’S WAY INTO PEOPLE’S HEARTS?
2014 has been a great year for female-dominated films. Queen worked big time and Mardaani too is successfully running in theatres. Hasee Toh Phasee and Highway weren’t huge hits but the performances of Parineeti Chopra and Alia Bhatt respectively and the manner in which they dominated the narratives were much loved. Sadly, such films haven’t really opened big. Queen had a poor opening and it was only later that it picked up. Ragini MMS 2 and The Dirty Picture opened huge but both these films had sex as an important component. However, Mary Kom can be the biggest opener in the league of female-dominated films, merely on the power of the script and Priyanka Chopra’s presence.
Moreover, the film has got a tax-free status in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh and the other states are also expected to follow suit. This will give a real boost to the film’s collections. Last year, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag benefited because of tax exemption and even crossed the 100-crore-mark.
The next 2 Fridays will see slew of releases like Finding Fanny, Creature, Khoobsurat, Daawat-E-Ishq, Ugly etc. These films will eat into Mary Kom’s shows but at the same time, won’t serve as huge competition, especially if the response to Mary Kom is very positive. In such a scenario, Mary Kom can have a good run till Bang Bang’s release on October 2.
All this however will be possible only if the response is very positive. If it isn’t, Mary Kom can have a tough time at the box office after a fair opening. However, the promo gives out positive vibes and there is sizeable excitement not only among the viewers but also within the industry. Let’s hope for the best and let’s hope Mary Kom turns out to be one of the must-watch films of 2014!
