WILL SINGHAM RETURNS BE BETTER THAN IT’S PREDECESSOR?

I still can’t forget the day I saw Singham. The date was July 22, 2011. It was the first day first show of the film and me and my friends landed at Chitra Cinema in Mumbai to catch the flick, with hardly any expectations. When the film was over, we came out of the theatre thoroughly entertained! The audience was amazing and it was fun to clap, hoot, cheer for Bajirao Singham as he took on the baddies! Till date, it remains one of our best movie experiences!

As Singham Returns releases tomorrow, one can’t help but expect a lot from the film. Yes, the first part was amazing but the theatrical trailer of the second part promises loads of dhamaka and entertainment. Ajay Devgn seems to be in top form. The action has shifted from Goa to Mumbai. In fact, the film has been shot in some excellent locations of Maximum City like Gateway Of India, Reay Road, Mahim Dargah, Worli Bandra Sea Link and it’ll be fun to see these locales in the film. Amole Gupte is the baddie and the entire ‘Gaiety-Galaxy’ dialogue mouthed by Ajay to him is hilarious! Action – the hallmark of Rohit Shetty films – looks splendid. Singham Returns releases on Friday August 15 which is a nationwide holiday (Independence Day). This would definitely give a boost to the opening day collections.

However, Singham was a terrific film and Singham Returns has to be better than or at least as good as the first part. Or else, the film can slip in the weekdays significantly. Also, there are apprehensions about Kareena Kapoor’s character in the film and that it might slow down or thwart the narrative. Music helps the film generate excitement. In case of Singham Returns, it hasn’t been the case. The Yo Yo Honey Singh track, Aata Majhi Satakli, has grabbed eyeballs but majority of people have given it thumbs down.

Despite the obstacles, Singham Returns is all set to have a huge weekend. With small films like Mardaani and Mad About Dance releasing next Friday, Singham Returns has kind of an open run for 2 weeks. Hence, it can turn out to be a huge grosser and perhaps be Ajay Devgn’s biggest film, if made well.
