How's your role different from the other detectives we have read about?
First of all, I couldn't believe that I was being offered the role of a female detective. I was very excited at the very outset. I don't remember watching any Indian film on this subject. When I read the script, I found that the writer had managed to not only tell a detective story , but also a human interest story of a female detective. My character, Bilkis comes from Mughal Pura in Hyderabad. She is not interested in marriage and aspires to be a detective. Unlike other detectives, Bobby doesn't know everything. (But) there is this childlike joy in discovering things around her. Though she is street smart, sharp, outspoken with a great presence of mind, she is also very childlike.
One hears that 12 disguises were shortlisted after a trial of 122 disguises. What were the challenges of donning different avatars?
The only challenge was to maintain the characteristics of being sharp, yet innocent. The disguises were organic and integral to the script. The director didn't want a caricature, he wanted me to be a real person. Actors are known to react, to be a real person. Actors are known to react, and so, I was naturally responding to my makeup, costume, surroundings... For instance, when I play a man with a moustache, I would twirl it like the way men do.
Your pairing with Ali Fazal is quite unconventional. He is much younger than you...
Age has got nothing to do with the pairing, chemistry matters. I was paired with Naseer (Naseeruddin Shah) the same way I am opposite Ali. There can be great chemistry even if the person is double or half your age.
With Bobby Jasoos, you are once again carrying a film on your shoulders after The Dirty Picture and Kahaani. Is the experience any different?
I never felt any kind of pressure. I had great support from Dia, Sahil, Samar and Sanyukta (story writer) while doing the film; they are like the Charminars of Bobby Jasoos.
