The recently released Revolver Rani (RR) sees Vir Das graduating to a lead role from supporting ones. The next 15 months, he says, will also see him experimenting with genres other than comedy.
While Amit Sahani Ki List is a romcom, Santa Banta is a family entertainer. Then, there is 1984, a dark thriller based on the anti-Sikh riots, and Khanna Patel (working title), which is a commercial romance. Saxx Ki Dukaan is an adult comedy featuring Vir in a double role. He is also on board Nikhil Advani’s next, a coming-of-age story.
Tigmanshu Dhulia, one of the producers of RR, says they were convinced about Vir when they thought of casting him for the role. “Most of our actors are gym-trained and can’t lose their inhibitions. They are scared to open up and accept a character, but Vir is versatile and bold,” says Dhulia.
The actor is happy with the way his career is shaping up. He says, “It hasn’t come easy. I’ve had to work hard to create my space in the industry. The last three years were about learning, and now, I’m confident enough to do some serious experimentation. The initial idea was to just get my foot past the door. Now, I want to see the bedroom, basement and what’s in the kitchen.”
