When Sri Lankan singer-songwriter-rapper Yohani created Manike Mage Hithe last year, little did she know that she would achieve international fame. Much has changed for the young singer since then, and now she is focusing on Bollywood. She has shifted base to Mumbai and is also learning to speak Hindi. In an exclusive interview with BT, she spoke about life in Mumbai and her future plans.

‘IT STILL FEELS LIKE A DREAM’
While Yohani did dream of singing for Hindi films, she didn’t think she would one day shift base to Mumbai. “I honestly didn’t think I would be able to sing for Bollywood. It all still feels like a dream. I’ve grown up listening to Hindi music and watching Bollywood films. I’m a big fan of so many artistes from India, and now I’ve got to work with a few of them. It still feels surreal,” she says.

‘TAKING LESSONS TO GET THE ACCENT RIGHT’
It is not easy singing in Hindi, she admits. “Singing in a different language is quite a challenge. Learning to match the accent changes my vocal texture, so I need to get that right. But I am taking classes and working towards that,” says Yohani.

‘IT IS DISHEARTENING TO SEE UNKIND WORDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA’
Fans, social media and critics do not take kindly to recreated songs and when we ask her for her views on this, Yohani says, “I personally don’t think about these things. If I like a song, I keep listening to it. Whether it is a remix or not does not matter to me. And I’m humbled by all the love and support that I got for Manike Mage Hithe, which is actually just my version of the existing Sinhalese song. I believe when artistes recreate music, they do not do it with any ill intentions. We do our best and put our heart and soul into the work. It is sometimes disheartening to see unkind words on social media. But we have to take it in our stride and strive to be better next time.”

‘I LIKE THREE-WHEELER RIDES IN MUMBAI’
Now that she has been spending a lot of time in Mumbai because of work, we ask her about the city. She says, “I like the three-wheeler rides (autorickshaw) in Mumbai, and I love how my team makes me feel at home here. The traffic is the only thing I dislike! I’d love to have my family here with me. But sadly, I don’t think they are going to move. My sister is a doctor and her work is mostly in Sri Lanka. Of course, they will come here from time to time to visit.”

‘EVEN THOUGH I DON’T FULLY UNDERSTAND HINDI, I FEEL THE MUSIC AND IT IS AMAZING’
Yohani has a long list of people she is a fan of in the Indian music industry. “I’m a huge fan of A R Rahman, Pritam, Arijit Singh, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan... the list goes on. Even though I don’t fully understand Hindi, I feel their music and it is amazing. I aspire to have a body of work like them one day.”

One tweet from Amitabh Bachchan about my song changed things overnight for me-Yohani

From learning to play the guitar by watching videos online to becoming an overnight sensation with her rendition of Manike Mage Hithe, Yohani has come a long way indeed. Recently, the Sri Lankan music artiste toured multiple Indian cities and even made an appearance on the reality show hosted by Salman Khan for her popular track. In an exclusive interview with Bombay Times, the 28-year-old Sri Lankan singer-composer talks about how Amitabh Bachchan’s tweet about her song changed things overnight, her music, being a sportsperson and more. Excerpts:

You were in a band when you were in school. Tell us about your foray into music…
I was in the Western brass band and I played the trumpet and French horn, but back then, I was more into sports. I tried my hand at polo, swimming, synchronised swimming, Wushu and many other things. My parents pushed us to do many extracurricular activities. My mother enrolled me for piano classes, and that is how I got into music. Then, I picked up a guitar and learned how to play by watching videos online.

You created Manike Mage Hithe during a lockdown at home...
Yes, we were all quite frustrated with the Coronavirus pandemic, and I was experimenting in my studio with my instruments. Manike has always been a favourite of mine and I thought of making a TikTok video of it. Chamath came across this and invited me to do an official cover of it.

When did you realise that the song had gone viral?
I think it happened in stages. When the song first reached 25 million views, we were all very excited. Then one day, Amitabh Bachchan tweeted about my song, and things changed overnight.

How are you handling the sudden fame?
I am still adjusting to it. I’m humbled by the love and support. I’m also very grateful that we could tour India and perform for a live audience. They loved the music we played. Even though I was introduced to many people with Manike, I’m proud that I have a repertoire to perform for a live audience. I hope people like my upcoming music as well.

You have spoken about your love for Hindi film music many times. Recently, you debuted in the Bollywood music industry with the title track of Shiddat. How has that been?
We watch a lot of Hindi movies in Sri Lanka. We grew up watching Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan and often sing songs from Hindi films, too. I can’t describe what I felt when I got the opportunity to be a part of Shiddat’s new track. I had to learn the words and pronunciation in a day. I think I have to learn the language a lot more, and I am working on it. I look forward to doing singing more Hindi songs.

Which Indian musicians do you admire?
I admire A R Rahman a lot. The music that he created even a decade or two ago still feels fresh. I was listening to a playlist of his songs the other day, and each composition is so complex and beautiful. I grew up listening to his music and I still listen to it. It would be a dream come true to work with him one day. I also like Badshah, Divine, Honey Singh and Neha Kakkar; I feel a certain connection with them. I guess you could say that their vibe is great.

Amitabh Bachchan, Tiger Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Priyanka Chopra shared Manike Mage Hithe; its amazing-Yohani

The singer from Sri Lanka admits to feeling the pressure for replicating the success, adds her focus is on making music that she likes

Sri Lankan singer Yohani’s song, Manike Mage Hithe, is perhaps the most recent example of music transcending borders. Many of us don’t even know the meaning of the lyrics, yet we’ve heard it at least once on Instagram reels. The Sinhalese song has gone viral, crossing 100 million views on YouTube, and climbing many chartbuster lists. For the 28-year-old singer, the response has actually also brought along with it some pressure: To deliver a hit like this again.

“That’s a big problem for us,” she admits, “I’m not a person who’s aiming for the views as much, I usually produce the songs that I like, according to my taste. I hope you guys will like the next one. I’m not too sure.”

Manike Mage Hithe, which translates to Baby In My Heart, has found such a fanbase in India, that many celebrities have been raving about it, too. Talking to us over a video call, an excited Yohani says, “All of them have reposted and shared it... Amitabh Bachchan, Tiger Shroff, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Priyanka Chopra Jonas. It’s amazing!”

The power of social media has been further made clear to the singer, and she adds, “I think it’s really a good way to just connect with people and share your music. Not just that, but whatever you want to share, it’s just right there.”

What comes as a surprise is that it just took five years for Yohani to reach this stage in her career. However, initially, she wasn’t even sure that music is what she wants to pursue professionally.

“A lot of things have happened since 2016. I honestly didn’t know when I started, whether I wanted to become a musician. I was doing accounting. I started with doing covers of songs on my YouTube channel, then moved on to originals, and now it’s just a bit of both. The growth has been really amazing, and for my team as well. It’s incredible,” she gushes.

Viral song, fame, fans — what’s next on the list of this viral sensation now?

Yohani exclaims, “My immediate one is my album... I’m done with it, I just have to release it now. If I go a little further, I want to be able to perform live for a lot of people, like hundreds of thousands of people one day, maybe.”

Coronavirus has played spoilsport, she continues, “It has been a little awkward. I really miss live shows, everyone in the music industry does. I just have to wait.”
