Being a pan-India actor is a pleasure, not a pressure-Yash

Having achieved stardom after KGF: Chapter 1, Yash discusses raising the stakes with the recently released second instalment
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; April 16, 2022)
Winning a box-office clash against a Shah Rukh Khan film is almost unheard of. When KGF - Chapter 1 achieved it on its release alongside Zero in 2018, people sat up and took notice of Yash. The actor, a south sensation until then, was catapulted to pan-India stardom. Four years on, as KGF: Chapter 2 has opened on a strong note, Yash says the stardom motivates him to do better.
“Being a pan-India actor is a pleasure, not a pressure. I felt the pressure last time [during the release of KGF: Chapter 1] when I had to show the audience who I am. Now, they want to see what more we can deliver. We have done our best. We never take our fans for granted,” he states.
Prashanth Neel’s directorial venture — shot in Kannada, and dubbed in several languages — is another example of south films making an impact at the box office. How does he view the rise of pan-India films and actors? “It’s a good development. We need more actors, more [filmmakers] who have a global approach. The vision is to bring people together and make it one industry, at the end of the day.”
KGF: Chapter 2, also starring Sanjay Dutt, Prakash Raj and Raveena Tandon, boasts of grand visuals and larger-than-life characters. Asked how he infuses reality into such parts, Yash says, “You have to understand that hopes and dreams have no limitations. When you see a larger-than-life film, it has a bigger message. It is presented in a universal way, so that most people can relate to it. Rocky [his character] belongs to the mining world where people have illegal control of mines, but this character can be relatable in any other setting or organisation. When you have a larger-than-life character, you need to balance it with a universal message and make it relatable. People will buy what you are saying if it is backed by [strong] content and emotion.”
KGF is a vision and I would call it Karnataka’s wealth or pride-Yash

Ahead of his release KGF: Chapter 2 ,the star talks about his idea of cinema, the KGF journey and what the term ‘pan-India star’ means to him
Sunayana Suresh (BOMBAY TIMES; April 12, 2022)
With KGF - Chapter 2, people beyond Karnataka will understand why Yash is called the Rocking Star, director Prashanth Neel said at the trailer launch of the film. The actor, who has become a pan-Indian name, speaks about surrendering to Prashanth’s vision, his plans, thought process and more. Excerpts. .
You spent over half a decade working on KGF. Tell us what kept you going...
It is part of my profession and out here, it was all about the vision and the cinema. No one is bigger than cinema and all of us are slaves of our vision. Once, you have a vision, you just dedicate all you have towards it. This is my belief system.
What does KGF mean to you?
What makes KGF special are the relationships I have gained. KGF is a vision and I would call it
Karnataka’s wealth or pride.
What does the term pan-Indian star mean to you?
Pan-Indian star means that I have gained more love and support from different parts of the country.
Have you learnt anything from the character of Rocky Bhai in this journey?
We grew together. I would find it hard to pinpoint what exactly changed, but we change daily over time and this change could either affect the way I play a character or maybe the character itselfis the reason for the change. As we progress in life, there will be changes. Whether they are good or bad and what we need to do depends on us.
Your confidence is seen as your trademark. Do you think that has been a key factor in your journey?
It is not just confidence, but also the hard work to back that confidence. If you are ready to dedicate that hard work and live towards working for that dream, then you can achieve anything.
Prashanth said you have transcended your usual work and have been a part of all departments. Tell us about your friendship and this working relationship...
I have done the same in all my films, but he is saying it because of his greatness and because he feels secure. I wouldn’t say there is anything great in what I have done. Instead of quantifying each one’s involvement, I would say it is his vision and world where I have enjoyed working as much in front of the camera as behind the screen. Our sole purpose was to entertain. As individuals, Prashanth and I share a great bond and I have immense respect for him. He is a great director. His abilities come from his understanding of life. He is clear with his thinking. I am very fond of him.
You’re often referred to as a complete package, who is known for action as much as dancing. Did you miss dancing in this film?
There are some characters who come with the scope for dancing and there are some who don’t. We do not need to force fit something. Eventually, when you give something genuine, which is entertaining, fans and audience will like it.
You’d mentioned in an acceptance speech about how you want to take Kannada cinema to the world. What have you planned next?
I want to do more good films and better things. Eventually, belief is what makes life. We need to have that and I have always maintained that when you stand firm with your beliefs, then everything progresses. I also believe we need not think that anything is ultimate. Yet, we need to believe that every step of ours is big and have that same conviction in every step.
You have also ensured your team has moved ahead with you...
Cinema happens with the hard work of many people. It is a false notion that a hero is the main reason. For me to do my work as an actor, there is an entire army of people who work behind the scenes and also, the sacrifices of my family. So, I wouldn’t say I take people with me, but it is more like we all move ahead together.
Will one get to see you more often on screen?
I would like to make movies quicker and faster, but it depends on what kind of film it is and how fast everything will fall in place. But I can assure you that I never waste any time. I am always working. Cinema is always on my mind and it becomes our responsibility, too. I am the sort who would be happiest if I was on the sets daily.
Finally, since the KGF journey is coming to a close, is your wife, Radhika, looking at another celebration when that bearded look is off, like she did the last time?
She has given up. While she rejoiced last time, I had to again get into the look. I am also fond of the bearded look. Now, it will all depend on the character of my next film and what my future directors want from me.
I became an actor by watching films in theatres. I believe in that world-Yash

A fan of the big screen experience, Yash feels OTT can’t be compared to it
Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 1, 2022)
With films beelining for theatrical releases, Kannada actor Yash’s K.G.F: Chapter 2 is also finally set to hit cinemas. The actor says he is a firm believer in entertaining his fans on the big screen, despite the rising popularity of OTT platforms.
“People need entertainment in cinemas, where it is a fantasy world. I became an actor by watching films in theatres. I believe in that world,” he tells us.
With the on again, off again functioning of theatres amid the Coronavirus pandemic, the overall economics of the film industry has been difficult. Yash also feels the impact of theatres being shut. “With theatres being inaccessible, cinema was not being watched the way [it was intended]...OTT will not give you that experience. To enjoy films, you have to leave everything aside, go to a theatre and get into that world,” the actor shares.
In fact, the 36-year-old looks forward to watching all the films that are releasing in cinemas. “I just want to watch good films on the big screen. I’m part of the audience first and then an actor,” he adds.
Besides theatres being back in business, another development that Yash feels happy about is how pan-India films have come to the prominence. The actor, whose 2018 film K.G.F: Chapter 1 was one such project that was a huge success, says, “I don’t understand why we are thinking like [cinema from] north, south, east, west… It is a whole industry, where people like to watch different things. So, why these barriers?”
He further elaborates, “The audience is waiting to watch all kinds of content. We have to figure out a way how to reach a place where we can entertain everyone. The pan-India box office is huge! And if someone is ready to tap all these markets, then just imagine the possibilities.”

Yash says that though we are all going through bad times, nothing is permanent
Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 8, 2022)
The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and the increase in cases has got people worried again, including Kannada actor Yash, who admits that he is “fed up with this”. He notes, “Humans are like this. We need things to happen the way we want them to happen. We are tuned (programmed) to live our lives a certain way, and if that is not happening, then it is a problem. But Nature, on the other hand, is different.”
Yash continues, “Not just the cinema industry but a lot of people are going through a bad phase…There is no consistency in their incomes, there is also psychological pressure. However, let’s hope [for a better future] and be positive. It should settle down. Eventually any pain has to come to an end. Nothing is permanent.”
On the professional front, it has been a long time since his fans have seen him on the big screen. Yash, who was last seen in K.G.F: Chapter 1 back in 2018, talking about its sequel shares, “We are excited about presenting the film to our fans because we know what we have created. I know people will love it. It’s like you are a cook and everything is ready and you know people are hungry, but there is some process you need to finish. That’s taking time.”
On a personal note, the actor celebrates his 36th birthday today. He shares that he misses pre-pandemic birthdays, mainly because he used to enjoy meeting his fans, who used to shower him with gifts. “My birthday is for my fans. I am an actor and I have a big family, not just parents, wife and kids. My fans are my family. Even in my wedding, I had a special reception for my fans five years ago. We all work hard for that, and we actors need that attention, appreciation, love and when it comes in such a big way, you receive it with open arms,” he says and adds, “Unfortunately, given the situation, I can’t do that this year.”
Shah Rukh Khan is a superstar, but we have a bigger market in the South-Yash

Kannada superstar Yash goes one-up on Zero as the only other Christmas release
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; December 6, 2018)
It was a classic case of Bollywood's obsession with opening weekend numbers when Shah Rukh Khan requested actor-friend Riteish Deshmukh to advance the release of his Marathi film to ensure an open run for his much-awaited film, Zero. Now, the superstar suddenly finds competition in an unexpected quarter.
South star Yash's Kannada film, KGF: Chapter 1, is set to lock horns with the Aanand L Rai-directed venture on December 21. Interestingly, the Hindi version of the multi-lingual is being presented by Khan's producer friends, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.
Point out that taking on Khan at the box office is no mean feat, and Yash smiles, "I am a big fan of Shah Rukh Khan. We are aware of his strengths. He is a superstar, but we have a bigger market in the South. Bollywood films have little share in those regions."
While makers of the Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif starrer had booked the Christmas slot last year, Yash admits that they zeroed in on the date only recently. "There were no second thoughts about the date. We felt the window was ideal as it is the start of the holiday season," he says, adding that there is enough space for two big outings to co-exist. "Two films releasing on the same day should not be a problem. Both films belong to different genres."
Set against the backdrop of the Kolar gold mines, the period drama is the first of a two-part series. Confident of the Prashanth Neel-directed venture, Yash says the final product and not the release date determines a film's success. "We are happy with the date and confident about the film. At the end of the day, the audience decides on the basis of what you have done."
