(Crisp) Movie Review: WILD WILD PUNJAB by FENIL SETA

Wild Wild Punjab, which has released today on Netflix, is produced by Luv Ranjan and is about four friends on a mad ride. The premise is promising and a few scenes bring the house down. Also, it's just 110 minutes long. Sadly, all jokes don't land as intended. The drug angle and action in the end are forced. The finale doesn't have the desired impact and an important track is forgotten by the makers. Varun Sharma and Sunny Singh, however, put up entertaining performances. Manjot Singh, too, is damn good. Jassie Gill does well but hardly has any dialogues. Patralekhaa is likeable while Ishita Raj delivers a confident performance. Rajesh Sharma is dependable as always. Gopal Dutt (Jain's father) plays an amusing character but is wasted. Aasheema Vardaan is okay. All in all, Wild Wild Punjab is an average film.

Fukrey actor Varun on how he has attempted different comedic styles in Wild Wild Punjab and Sab First Class
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 2, 2024)
It has been an eventful week for Varun Sharma. The actor wrapped up the shoot of Sab First Class in Punjab, returning to Mumbai in time for the launch of D, which was announced on Thursday as part of Netflix’s 2024 slate. He believes the Samarpreet Singh-directed comedy, which also stars Jassie Gill, Manjot Singh and Sunny Singh, will resonate with the youth. Reason? To the actor, it’s the perfect road trip film.
“I think the best road trips happen after a break-up. When you have your friends by your side while going through a break-up, the chaos, wickedness and wackiness that take place—[it’s all reflected] in Wild Wild Punjab. After a relationship ends, every person feels the need to say, ‘I am over you’. Here, my character is on a journey to say these four amazing words,” laughs Sharma.
Comedy comes naturally to him. While it was evident in his debut film Fukrey (2013), where he shone as the goofy Choocha, the actor, over the past decade, honed his craft and was praised for his performances in the subsequent Fukrey instalments and Chhichhore (2019). Sharma aims to widen his range within the genre this year.
“In each film, I’m portraying a character that challenges me to redefine comedy. It’s a thrilling experience to experiment with different comedic styles. I had a great time shooting with Shehnaaz Gill and Kusha Kapila for Sab First Class. We are friends, and when friends reunite on screen, the process becomes a lot of fun.”
The actor will also be seen in Rumi Ki Sharafat, produced by Dinesh Vijan.

Director Bhushan Patel, who has explored the horror genre in his previous films, was a natural choice for this Panorama Studios' horror love story, which revolves around conjoined twins.
About shooting the film, Abhishek's father and producer Kumar Mangat says, “While Bipasha had to shoot a number of scenes twice, in keeping with her dual roles, we had to ensure that the visual effects added to the eerie scenes.“ He adds, “We were also particular about the soundtrack, because if you've cracked it, then you've won half the battle. The song Katra having caught on is one example.“
The team is pleased with the response to the promos and songs. After Alone, they have Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 in the pipeline. Abhishek adds, “We're also producing Wild Wild Punjab, a road film in association with Luv Ranjan, the director of Pyaar Ka Punchnama and its sequel. A few other subjects are simultaneously being developed.“
Alone, produced by Abhishek Pathak, Kumar Mangat, Pradeep Agarwal and Prashant Sharma, releases January 16.
