I had to gain weight but with MMA training, I lost weight; I was in catch 22 situation-Sidharth Malhotra

Sidharth Malhotra who has started shooting for Brothers an adpatation of the hit film Warrior talks about how he bulked up for his role and trained in mixed martial arts
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; October 25, 2014)
With Ek Villain doing a business of Rs 100 crore,
Sidharth Malhotra is in on a career high. Not only has he become
one-of-the-most sought after actors, his stakes have increased in the ad
market too. Just three-films-old, this Student Of The Year actor has
managed to spring suprises with every performance. If Hasee Toh Phasee
had him playing a romantic guy, Ek Villain had him essaying a good boy
turned bad and his next, Brothers will see him as a boxer. Here,
Sidharth talks about evolving as an actor, his transformation and
more...
Has Ek Villain changed people’s perception of you as an actor?
I hope so. Actually, it started with Hasee Toh Phasee (HTP) more than Ek Villain. HTP was a slice-of-life film and I was not the typical mainstrean hero. That reassured people about me (as an actor). After Ek Villain I hope they stop looking for reassurance as I have done enough of films with variety.
The film had you doing a lot of action sequences. Which was the most thrilling?
There was this stunt which had Riteish (Deshmukh) and me being thrown from a five storied building, with harnesses. That was both scary and thrilling.
Tell us about the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) you have taken up to prepare for your role as a boxer in Brothers.
I had just two months to gain a particular weight and acquire a certain size. However, the kind of training you do for MMA, you tend to loose weight and my character required me to be bigger (bulked up). I was in a catch-22 situation. I am eating as much as I can and trying to get the style right. It is very strenuous though. I am still slightly under the weather. I am not just a boxer in the film, it’s a mix of martial arts.
Does this kind of a physical transformation take a toll on you?
Yes, it does. In this profession we are short of time, our days are not planned like in the US where actors get a six months gap. So, yes we do abuse our bodies, but it’s up to us to do it in a healthy manner with trainers, nutritionists and your own research. It’s also fun — what is the point in doing the same things? I have picked up a couple of sports which are new to me. It’s also a great way to stay fit. Even after the film, I would like to continue with MMA at least twice a week.
Have you seen Warrior?
Of course, it’s a cult film. Brothers is not exactly the same, it’s an adaptation. I hope we make a great MMA film for India.
How is the experience shooting with Akshay Kumar?
We haven’t shot together yet. I have begun shooting recently with Jackie Shroff. He is the nicest guy I have met, he has a great vibe. Shooting with seniors is a great experience — they have some interesting stories to tell!
There are reports about you dating Izabelle Laite..
(Cuts in) That’s my personal life, I don’t want to comment on it.
Lastly, what prompted you to associate yourself with the water park Aquamagica?
It’s a youth friendly brand and has a party vibe. A place where youngsters can go and chill. Most importantly, I have always been excited about water activities. Right from childhood I have loved swimming in salt water. I have participated in several swimming competitions in Delhi but did not pursue it professionally. So when people from Aquamagica approached me it seemed like a good idea.

Sidharth Malhotra started
shooting for Brothers, Karan Malhotra's adaptation of the
Hollywood film Warrior in a city studio yesterday. His look in
the film was revealed when he stepped out to shoot a promotional
video for Mumbai Film Festival.
The actor who plays a professional fighter in the film has spent the past few months bulking up and the result of the long hours spent at the gym is clearly visible on Sidharth's muscular frame. “He started shooting for Brothers on Sunday. However, the scenes where he has to be bare-chested will be shot later in the month. He's been asked to gain another 4 kilos in the meanwhile,“ said a source close to the actor.
Interestingly, the actor will have to shed off the bulk by January when he begins shooting adventure flick Bhavesh Joshi, where he plays a lean vigilante.

Tushar Joshi (DNA; September 24, 2014)
A source reveals, “The climax scene of the original was the major highlight of the film which is why Karan wants to start shooting the film with it. The first schedule will feature a major fight scene, between Akshay and Sidharth.”
Akshay has lost weight for the role and has become leaner, while Sidharth has been doing MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) to prepare for the film. Brothers has Jackie Shroff playing the father of the two actors, and Jacqueline Fernandez is paired with Akshay. The film is an adaptation of Hollywood film Warrior (2011) featuring Tom Hardy, Sean McAnallen, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Morrison and Nick Nolte. It will release on October 2, 2015.
Tiger Shroff helps papa Jackie for Warrior remake?

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 25, 2014)
In an interview to Mirror (July 21), Agneepath director Karan Malhotra had said that he is remaking the acclaimed Hollywood film, Warrior, to suit Indian sensibilities.
Consequently, Jackie Shroff who steps into the shoes of Nick Nicolte to play the alcoholic father of the protagonists will have to get into the boxing ring, unlike Nolte's character. And Jaggu Dada wants to be fighting fit before he steps in front of the camera.
He plays father to Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra, who portray boxers in the film. It was a role which got Nolte the Oscar nod and Jackie has started an intensive diet and exercise regime to fit the bill.
Interestingly, Jackie's son Tiger is monitoring papa's eroutine with his trainer Nitesh Sharma. The Heropanti actor has even bought a set of new weights for his father.
As far as his diet is concerned, Nitesh told Mirror that Jackie eats small meals comprising mainly green vegetables, at short intervals.
The regime is working wonders if the actor's recent appearances are anything to go by. When contacted, Jackie admitted, "Thanks to my exercise regime and my diet I have already lost 6.5 kg. But I am not done yet. There is still lot of work to be done."
Jackie's wife Ayesha added, "Jackie has always had toned hands and legs. Now he is in the process of losing weight on the belly and face."
She is taking every precaution to ensure that her husband gets fit in the next 30 days. "The refrigerator is almost empty. I have thrown out all the mithai, ice-creams and gulab jamuns because Jackie has a sweet tooth," she revealed.
Jackie chipped in, "I love jalebis in particular. But I shall have to live without them. The role in the remake of Warrior is one of the most important roles I've landed in my career. I am very excited about this film and raring to go."
He added that son Tiger is very happy with his improved eating habits. "He tells me that if I look after myself I will live longer."
I've yet to hear the script of Rowdy Rathore 2-Akshay Kumar

Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 23, 2014)
He's hosted three seasons of the reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi, but Akshay Kumar isn't sure if he'll go back to it again. "Even if I was asked it would depend on what I was doing at the time," he says. "At the moment I can't think of taking it on. With three production houses and doing two-three movies a year as an actor, I have my hands full."
However, Mr Khiladi will be back on TV as the judge of another show, Dare 2 Dance, supposedly a combo of Fear Factor and Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa. Confirming the news Akshay says, "Yes, it's a unique concept and I'm really excited." He refuses to divulge details, saying things are being finalised but admits they'll be shooting it in South Africa and the show will go on air this year itself.
The actor is on a roll having notched up a Rs 100 crore hit in Holiday. But buzz is, he's fallen out with the film's producer, Vipul Shah, over profit sharing and because he poached the title Singh Is Bliing which Vipul had reserved for the Singh Is Kinng sequel. "It's a known fact that people will try to destroy relationships which are doing well," he grouses. "Vipul messaged me just today to decide a date—July 25 or 26—for a success party. As for the title, we made Singh Is Kinng six years ago. Vipul often comes to my office. If he had any objection to my using the title Singh Is Bliing, he'd have told me so. It's fun to read such news but honestly, I've never had a fallout with any of my producers."
But did he not have a fallout with Salman Khan while shooting the Fugly title track which resulted in the number getting edited out from the film? "Says who?" he argues. "All this is just a figment of someone's imagination. Fugly was a Rs 4 crore film, it made its money."
Right now, he's gearing up for Entertainment, which revolves around a golden retriever and is inspired by a true story. Vidya Balan's line, "Entertainment, Entertainment, Entermaintment" comes to mind but Akshay maintains, "This is a family comedy and has nothing to do with The Dirty Picture. I'm surprised no one made a film about a man and his best friend after Teri Meherbaniyan. I have two German Shepherds who give me unconditional companionship."
The film's director duo, Sajid-Farhad, will also be helming Akshay in Housefull 3 but he is quick to add that all is well with earlier director Sajid Khan who is persona non grata after two duds, Himmatwala and Humshakals. "These things happen. After night comes darkness," he philosophises.
While the Housefull franchise will go forward, he's not a part of Aankhen 2 and not doing another Khiladi. Even Rowdy Rathore 2 is just a plan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's mind. "All I know is that he wants to make a sequel, I've yet to hear the script," he shrugs. On his way to record an Eid message for a TV channel he's getting impatient, "Let's wrap this fast."
The belligerent mood will be on show in the Warrior remake. Costar Sidharth Malhotra who is building up his body and training in mixed martial arts. What's Akki's prep plan? "The first plan is to sign the agreement, then one hour of shadow boxing everyday," he quips. That's it? "One hour of shadow boxing equals three hours of gymming," he points out. "Don't underestimate it or me."
Salman Khan has made Shhuddhi bigger and better-Karan Malhotra

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 21, 2014)
Karan Malhotra who had disappeared after his directorial debut, Agneepath, is back in business. Salman Khan has stepped into Hrithik Roshan's shoes but before Shhuddhi takes off, he will wrap up the remake of Warrior with Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra. After two years of oblivion, he opens up to Mirror. Excerpts:
Hrithik dropped out of Shhuddhi citing date problems. But reports claim that he was worried about the tough task of toning up for the role after his accident and unhappy that the film revolves around the heroine and villain...
Well, there is a villain in Shhuddhi and the lead role demands a certain amount of exposure, but Hrithik's exit had nothing to do with creative differences. I'd assume that his personal problems during the period led to him dropping out of the film.
You must have been shattered?
I was disappointed. I've learnt the hard way that you need to have options when journeying through life. I used to be quite stuck-up earlier, but now I no longer blame one person.
Are you in touch with Hrithik?
Off and on. We have an emotional bond, he was my first hero.
After Hrithik's exit, you approached Ranveer Singh and Shah Rukh Khan. They took their time, adding to the delay.
No comments on the casting. And on the delay, ek haath se taali nahin bajti. If somebody was delaying the project then I allowed it to happen. If it hadn't been for Karan (Johar) and my wife Ekta, I wouldn't have survived, emotionally or financially.
Did you ever think of aborting Shhuddhi?
The media insisted Shuddhi would never be made, but Karan and I boosted each other.
In the interim, you decided to remake Warrior...
I had discussed the idea with Karan after Agneepath, and suddenly things fell into place.
Back to Shhuddhi, how did Salman come on board? And how do you see the film now?
Karan and I met Salman at his Bandstand house. He said 'yes' after listening to just 20 minutes of the narration. As for the second part of your question, Salman sir has made Shhuddhi bigger and better. My film is now top-lined by India's biggest star who has a phenomenal reach.
Salman is known to be quite moody, how will you handle him?
I have worked with him as an assistant director on Jaan-E-Mann and Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge. Of course, this time I'm the director so it will be a different experience.
For the leading lady will you go back to Kareena Kapoor?
Shhuddhi has changed from what it started out to be. When changes happen, one needs to look at things afresh.
It's Deepika Padukone's dream to work with Salman and now that the date clash with Bajirao Mastani has been averted, she can still do Shhuddhi...
Who wouldn't want a popular and successful heroine in his film? But we haven't taken a call yet about whether it will be Deepika, Kareena or someone else.
Now that the hero has changed, will the script change too?
We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Right now, I am focussed on Warrior.
Jackie Shroff to play Akshay Kumar-Sidharth Malhotra's father in The Warrior remake

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 11, 2014)
It was a role which got Nick Nolte an Oscar nod and now Jackie Shroff is set to step into the shoes of the American actor in the Hindi remake of The Warrior.
The film revolves around two brothers who meet each other in the boxing ring and Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra have already been cast as the competing siblings.
Jackie Shroff plays their alcoholic father in the film which will be directed by Karan Malhotra.
When contacted, Jackie confirmed the news, saying, "Like with any role, be it Parinda, Ram Lakhan or Dhoom 3, or any other film, I am excited about this one too. I have to shoot for this from September to January and we are working out the dates."
A source close to the film told Mirror that Karan Johar, the film's producer, met Jackie last week with the proposal.
"Jackie didn't take long to say yes. Karan (Malhotra) plans to tweak the role to suit the Indian audiences and both the director and producer agreed that Jackie will be a good fit for the role," said the source.
Nobody expected me to survive-Sidharth Malhotra

Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 5, 2014)
There's a spring in his step as he walks in. His latest film, Ek Villain, is racing towards the Rs 100 crore club. And Sidharth Malhotra is playing with numbers for the first time.
It's not been easy for an 'outsider' to inch his way into Bollywood's 'inside circle'. But when Salman Khan turned up at his doorstep to toast the film's success and gift him his watch, it proved that Sidharth had managed that feat. Of course, not everyone is as large-hearted as bhai, but the Delhi boy admits that he can now go to bed without worrying that this alien world he entered four years ago as an assistant director to Tarun Mansukhani on Dostana, will never be his.
That was the first time he'd been on a film set. And it wasn't the last. But even when he bagged the lead in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year, people continued to question his luck.
"I was made to understand that I didn't deserve it and the fairytale wouldn't last. Nobody expected me to survive. That was the last thing I needed to hear since I was living alone, away from my family and home. Every night I'd be plagued by doubts as I reflected on the day's work and wished I'd rehearsed the dance steps more," he reminisces.
During those dark days, Sidharth's support group were the ADs on the film and mentor-director Karan Johar who pushed all three proteges - Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth equally. SOTY was a hit but no one expected Sidharth to stay. While the other 'students' were fending off rumours about a brewing romance with each other and others, there were speculations about Sidharth's sexuality.
He laughs off the "casting couch" accusations saying that such loose talk is inevitable. "Alia and Varun have done three films with Karan's banner as compared to my two, of which Hasee Toh Phasee was a co-production. But I can understand the skepticism. I was a new boy from nowhere who had Karan's support," he shrugs.
Today, there's been a turnaround and his sightings with Izabelle Liete, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shraddha Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha has become fodder for the media. "Sonakshi too?" he asks. Yes, she's supposed to be his best friend. That draws a laugh, "I just have to attend someone's birthday party or go out for dinner with someone else, for us to be in a relationship. That's not going to stop me from socialising but tell me, which girl would want to be with a guy who goes to bed early and gives more importance to the gym? I don't even have a female lead in my next film."
The film is a desi adaptation of the 2011 sports drama Warrior. And Sidharth's priority is to turn big and beefy like Tom Hardy over the next six-seven weeks.
This means munching on carbs and proteins every 30 minutes, so he can put on eight-10 kilos and add on the inches to play a fighter who takes on his estranged brother in the ring.
Once he's built up a warrior's physique, for which he's undergoing specialised training in the gym, Sidharth will train in mixed martial arts so he can prove a worthy opponent to martial arts expert, Akshay Kumar, who plays his older brother in the film.
Isn't he worried about getting over-shadowed by the Khiladi? "I'm not going to worry about how many scenes and dialogue my costar has. I'd rather keep my faith in the content and work towards conveying my feelings through silences since I don't have too many lines," he smiles. "Even Hasee Toh Phasee was more Parineeti's (Chopra) film. Her character had the quirks, yet I was noticed."
But the film couldn't create the kind of box-office magic that was expected of it, perhaps because the idea of a guy leaving one sister for another didn't go down well with our conservative audience? "That was the idea behind so many blockbusters, including Sooraj Barjatya's films. What was harder to digest was Parineeti's character taking antidepressant pills and having kleptomaniac tendencies. I think people were expecting a happy, colourful romantic film but it was a darker drama targetting the metros. It made money and I took myself up one notch as an actor.
The idea is to be different with every film and I'm glad my mother and my brother who were sitting besides me during the screening of Ek Villain forget it was me on screen after the first 15 minutes," he exults. However, Sidharth admits that it wasn't easy to play Guru, who can throw a man into a fire and works as a hitman. "I used to work out scenarios in my head to explain his actions and do push-ups between shots so my face could glow with sweat and anguish," he reveals, pointing out that the unconventional climax when he reaches out to the child of the man who murdered his love, could have worked against the film had he killed Riteish's (Deshmukh) character.
After the Warrior, Sidharth will move on to Bhavesh Joshi, a vigilante who sets out to clean up the city of Mumbai. He's a superhero without superpowers but with a mask and may be a cape too. "We're working on the look. It has to look good and convincing, create an identity and take the franchise forward," says Sidharth, who has grown up on Superman, can't wait to become Bhavesh.
The 29-year-old who came to Mumbai seven years ago, with stars in his eyes and doubts on his mind, is looking to buy his own home in the city today. "It'll make me older, more responsible," he quips.
Sidharth Malhotra to bulk up for Karan Malhotra's next; lose it all for Bhavesh Joshi

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 19, 2014)
Sidharth Malhotra is a worried man. He has less than a month to build up a boxer's physique for Karan Johar's remake of American sports drama Warrior.
"I reprise Tom Hardy's character, a boxer, in the Hindi version," informs the actor, adding that though it's an official remake, director Karan Malhotra has added Bollywood masala to the script. "It's become another film altogether, darker and more dramatic, much like Karan's treatment of his directorial debut Agneepath."
To gain muscle mass, Sidharth has started training in mixed martial arts, including kickboxing and wrestling. "Karan has told me that I need to look physically aggressive and put on weight. It's going to be a strenuous regime," he admits.
However, by the year-end he will have to shed it all, as he slips into character for Bhavesh Joshi. Mirror had previously reported that Vikramaditya Motwane's vigilante drama is running late because of Sidharth's commitments with Dharma Productions. The actor confirms that Warrior will start in July six months before Bhavesh Joshi.
While Motwane remains tightlipped about the details of his project, Sidharth confirms that the plan is to spin a franchise, depending on the response to the first film. When quizzed on whether he plays a Gujarati superhero, he quips, "No. Bhavesh Joshi is just a name. He is a regular, middle-class Mumbaikar who assumes another nocturnal identity and becomes a masked crusader out to protect the city, like Batman and Gotham. He doesn't have any superpowers, only skills."
So, is Sidharth a fan of the superhero genre? "I'm a superhero buff, I'm biased towards Spiderman," he says, admitting that it's a conscious decision to move away from romcoms. "A lot depends on how well Ek Villain does, if the film works, it will give me the confidence to take more risks," he concludes.

When
we met Karan Johar's discovery Sidharth Malhotra last weekend, he was in
a musical
mood. The actor was tuned into the music of his upcoming film, Ekta
Kapoor's Ek Villain and spoke excitedly about watching Mithoon, Mohd
Irfan and Shraddha Kapoor's live per formance at an event this
Wednesday. Excerpts from the conversation that followed:
Ek Villain is a radical departure for you after Student Of The Year and Hasee Toh Phasee. How did you prepare for the role?
Milap Zaveri gave me the narration and the role was initially very loud with bhaigiri lingo. This was toned down. My character in the film doesn't speak too much. A lot is conveyed through expressions. We had a workshop with Mukesh Chabbra. I worked on my look. Besides stubble, I opted for tattoos. I have short hair in one look, a patch in the other. It wasn't easy to alternate between the two looks. I was very excited that Mohit Suri is directing the film. My character in the film has many shades of Emraan Hashmi's character from his film Awarapan.
Did you face Mohit's temper on the sets?
Mohit does have a temper. In fact, Shraddha (Kapoor, his co star in Ek Villain) told me that he was a lot more on the edge when making Aashiqui 2. But yeah, the crew had to bear the brunt sometimes. But he and I never had a fight. On the contrary, we bonded rather well. We both are dog lovers and have similar taste in movies.
You are doing another Dharma film, the remake of Priceless...
Tarun Mansukhani is still writing it.
Why does he take such a long time to write? A case in point is Dostana 2.
That is for Karan and Tarun to decide. Tarun wants to make sure that the script is flawless before he takes it to the floors. He has this process of showing it to friends and taking their feedback. And then he starts working on it again. If Priceless happens, it will be only happen next year. This year, I am busy with Vikramaditya Motwane's Bhavesh Joshi and Punit Malhotra's Warriors.
You replaced Imran Khan in Bhavesh Joshi. Did you speak to him before signing it?
No.
Aren't you doing Shakun Batra's next--another film where Imran was the first choice?
I am not doing that film.
Are you both good with each other?
A few days ago, we met in a gym. There is no ego thing between Imran and I.
Looking forward to work with Akshay Kumar in Dharma's Warriors?
Definitely. Unlike us, there is a sense of calmness in senior actors. Ditto for Riteish Deshmukh (his co-star in Ek Villain).
Recently, you had three back-to-back linkups...
I knew this was coming (pauses). I think, now, people are interested in me.
More recently, Aditi Rao Hydari and you bonded at an award function in Tampa and were spotted at various hangouts in NY...
Aditi and I did hang out together, but not alone. There were friends accompanying us.
What about rumours of Shraddha and you being attracted to each other?
Shraddha is a very attractive girl. We had a great time working together in Ek Villain. That's about it.
Did you have to explain the equation to her boyfriend Aditya Roy Kapoor?
I met Aditya in Tampa. There is no bad blood between us.
And what about your recent date with Brazilian model, Izabelle Leite at a Bandra nightspot?
(Fidgets) She and I share a healthy friendship that is essential to my sanity.

Since Sunday, industry insiders have been talking about Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar joining hands for a film titled Warrior starring Akshay and KJo's discovery Sidharth Malhotra, which will be directed by Agneepath director Karan Malhotra.
Mirror has it that KJo and Akshay are indeed venturing into a co-production, but it will be helmed by Dharma's other Malhotra, Punit Malhotra (I Hate Luv Storys, Gori Tere Pyar Mein). And it is a remake of a South film.
Says a source close to the film, "The script of the first half is ready and will be given to Akshay for a read next week. Then, KJo, Akshay and Punit will have another meeting to flesh out the second half." The masala movie will take off by the year end and Punit is set to scout for locales from August.
Meanwhile, the rumour that the Agneepath director will direct Akshay has lead to tongues wagging about a probable casting in Shhuddhi.
The movie started with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor before grapevine claimed that Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone were approached. Now, buzz is Salman Khan will topline the cast. When asked, KJo sent us a text saying, "Shhuddhi has not been cast"

Will Karan Malhotra, director of Agneepath (2012), make the Hindi version of the American sports drama, Warrior? Sources say that Malhotra will helm the Indianised adaptation of the film that will apparently be jointly produced by Endemol and Dharma Productions.
When contacted, Deepak Dhar, MD and CEO, Endemol, refused to say much. He said, “We are still working on Warrior; nothing has been finalised yet. We are yet to lock the team for this project.” A the Tom Hardy-starrer, Warrior is a 2011 sports drama that was directed by Gavin O’Connor. It tells the story of two brothers, their relationship and how they are pitted against each other in a martial arts tournament.
