Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani to shoot crucial scenes of Awarapan 2 over a 40-day Bangkok schedule

Awarapan 2: Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani to shoot crucial scenes over a 40-day Bangkok schedule

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; October 1, 2025)

Year on year, Emraan Hashmi’s fans would express their desire to see a sequel to his action drama, Awarapan (2007). Their wish has been granted — producer Vishesh Bhatt announced Awarapan 2 in March, and has now taken it on floors in Thailand (Bees saal baad, Sep 30). mid-day has now learnt that Hashmi and Disha Patani, led by director Nitin Kakkar, have a 40-day schedule lined up in Bangkok, after which they will shoot extensively in Mumbai to wrap up the sequel by the year-end.

Bangkok, as the starting point of Awarapan 2, is understandable. The 2007 film ended with Hashmi’s character Shivam, an atheist gangster, being shot in the Thailand capital.

A source reveals, “The last moments of Awarapan showed a dream sequence of Shivam reuniting with his love, played by Shriya Saran. The second instalment begins from this point — Shivam comes back to life and meets Disha’s character, who helps him in his next mission. Last week, Nitin and producer Vishesh started the shoot in a bustling Bangkok street. Throughout this week, they will film a high-octane action scene in a local market. All the action set-pieces and songs will be completed in this leg. The producer has roped in robust security as they will film in real locations, and he doesn’t want pictures to make their way online.”

If Hashmi was a wayward gangster with a scruffy look in the original, he will be seen in a new light in Awarapan 2. The source indicates, “Here, his character has matured after the loss. He will be seen sporting a lean frame and a French beard. Disha, too, underwent intense training as she has many action sequences in the film.”

With the Thailand leg expected to be wrapped up by early November, the team will then focus on the emotional scenes. The source adds, “Two Mumbai schedules have been chalked out, the first one to be shot in a suburban studio. The makers will erect a sprawling set depicting the interiors of the characters’ homes.”

Kakkar will dedicate early 2026 to post-production before the film’s April 3 release.

Emraan Hashmi's character Shivam to come back from the dead for Awarapan 2

Emraan Hashmi and Shriya Saran fronted Awarapan

Set to bring Emraan Hashmi’s character back from the dead in Awarapan 2, filmmaker Vishesh Bhatt says he pursued the sequel over other movies from his banner for its emotional story
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; April 1, 2025)

Few would have seen a sequel to Awarapan (2007) coming eighteen years after its release. Producer Vishesh Bhatt threw a curveball when he marked leading man Emraan Hashmi’s birthday last week by announcing Awarapan 2. Pre-production work has begun on the sequel, which will be helmed by Nitin Kakkar of Filmistaan (2012) and Jawaani Jaaneman (2020) fame, and casting is underway. We’ve learnt that the makers plan to take the film on floors by July.

Think Awarapan sequel, and the first question that comes to one’s mind is whether Hashmi will reprise his role of gangster Shivam Malik. After all, the 2007 movie ended with Shivam dying in a gunfight and reuniting with his love, essayed by Shriya Saran, in the afterlife. But sources tell us that Hashmi’s Shivam will return in the second edition.

“The plan is to take the narrative forward because Shivam is a well-known character. While Awarapan was written by Shagufta Rafique from a story by Mahesh Bhatt, the second instalment has been written by Vishesh, Nitin and Bilal Siddiqi. Like the original, this one too will have a love story at its core and a strong dose of action,” reveals a source.

Over the years, producer Mukesh Bhatt and his filmmaker-son Vishesh have doled out many franchises—from Aashiqui to Raaz and Murder—under their banner. What made them consider taking Awarapan’s story forward after almost two decades?

Vishesh says, “Awarapan has lived on in fans’ hearts for years. We always wanted to bring Shivam back, but only if we found a story that did justice to his legacy. Now, we’re finally making its sequel. We had many superhit films to make a sequel of, but we picked Awarapan because it’s an emotional story. The first was a dramatic crime story set in a dark world; the sequel will be an emotional story [rooted in] crime. Awarapan 2 stirs and challenges the core emotions in us, [feelings that are] conflicted and dark. In an era of big-screen entertainers, these are stories that talk about one’s inner conflicts.”

While Vishesh is no stranger to direction, he has roped in Kakkar, whose Filmistaan won the National Award, to helm the movie.

Explaining his choice, he says, “I don’t attend film parties, but I go to film festivals to watch independent filmmakers’ work. When I saw Filmistaan, I was blown away. Nitin’s courage as a storyteller stayed with me.”

Emraan Hashmi to reunite with Mukesh Bhatt for a twisted musical love story

Emraan Hashmi to reunite with the Bhatts with twisted musical love story

Sources say Emraan Hashmi, who was launched by Mukesh Bhatt, to reunite with the producer and director Vishesh Bhatt for a dark love story
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; February 19, 2025)

More often than not, the combination of Emraan Hashmi and producers Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt has been a winner at the box office, from Murder (2004) to Gangster (2006) and Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009). While the actor’s last collaboration with Vishesh Films was Raaz: Reboot in 2016, it looks like another association is in the offing. mid-day has learnt that Hashmi is in talks with Mukesh’s son and filmmaker-writer Vishesh Bhatt for a twisted musical love story.

The project will mark Vishesh’s second directorial venture after Murder 3 (2013). More importantly, it will be a homecoming of sorts for Hashmi, who hasn’t worked with his uncle Mukesh in over eight years.

A source says, “Emraan has been visiting Vishesh’s office for over a year as they have been in discussions for a movie. Last week, he was again spotted at their Khar office. While they have shortlisted a few stories, the one that has their attention is a modern love story with a dark twist, written by Vishesh. Things will be finalized by March.”

When mid-day reached out to Mukesh, who, along with his son, has continued leading the banner after his filmmaker-brother Mahesh stepped aside in 2021, the producer hinted at a possible collaboration. He said, “We’re looking at options, but it’s too early to talk about it. Vishesh is at the helm of it. He is now taking the banner forward, but yes, I will be there [to oversee] the music.”

Vishesh Bhatt to back film on India's demonetization

Vishesh Bhatt to back film on India's demonetisation
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; November 8, 2018)

In a departure from the romantic dramas that the Bhatts are famed for, we hear Vishesh Bhatt is set to back a satire based on the demonetisation that was announced by the Indian government on November 8, 2016. A source close to the production house reveals, "Vishesh has come across an interesting script revolving around demonetization. The narrative starts on the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi implemented the drive to abolish black money, and traces what it spiralled into eventually."

Two years since the development, the government's decision to implement demonetization has been a matter of serious debate. While the episode makes for compelling material, the source reveals that Bhatt is currently fine-tuning the script. "The project was conceptualised by Vishesh and his team. It will mark the Bhatts' first attempt at black comedy," adds the source. Though Bhatt has a few actors in mind, the casting process will kick off only next month before the project goes on floors early next year.

Mukesh Bhatt’s daughter Sakshi gets engaged on grandma’s birthday

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 5, 2018)

Filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt hosted a luncheon for his extended family at a Bandra restaurant to celebrate daughter Sakshi’s engagement with boyfriend Mazahir. The ceremony coincided with the birth anniversary of his mother Shirin Mohammad Ali as she was close to Sakshi.

“It is the biggest day of my life!” the father of the soon-to-be-bride exulted. “I am so emotional because my Cinderella has found her Prince Charming. They met through a common friend; Mazahir works in the digital space. I am happy that he has nothing to do with the film industry. He comes into the family like a whiff of fresh air. There are so many new things to talk about with him.” Quiz him on the wedding and he says the date hasn’t been finalised yet. “It will be towards the year-end or early next year.”

The four-hour luncheon which went on way past sun-down was attended by Mukesh and wife Nilima, son Vishesh with wife Kanika Parab, brother Mahesh with daughter Pooja, nephew Emraan Hashmi with wife Parveen and son Ayaan. Mukesh’s filmmaker-nephew Mohit Suri was also present but made an exit around 5 pm with actress-wife Udita Goswami. The filmmaker reveals that the engagement was not planned.

“It’s just a happy co-incidence that it coincided with my mother’s birthday. She lived with me till the day she passed away and was very fond of her granddaughter, Sakshi. It was like she wrote the screenplay of her life so her engagement would fall on her birthday,” Mukesh pointed out emotionally.

Senior executives from Apple to host a star-studded bash tonight in Mumbai

Ranveer Singh and Sidharth Malhotra
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 10, 2017)

Apple CEO Tim Cook’s visit to Mumbai became a talking point last year, with Shah Rukh Khan throwing a bash in his honour at his Bandra address. The romance between technology and Tinsel Town continues this year too. While Cook had to give India a miss this time, senior Apple executives are flying down to the city today. A party with Bollywood stars is on the itinerary. The guest list for the do, which will be held at a suburban five-star tonight, includes Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Sidharth Malhotra, Ayan Mukerji, Aditya Roy Kapur and Vishesh Bhatt amongst others. We hear Deepika Padukone was expected to attend, but had to cancel as she is travelling.

A source reveals, “The party is an extension of Tim’s visit last year. Vishesh is well-acquainted with some officials from the tech giant since they had met at the Harvard Business Conclave a couple of years ago. So, he was asked to curate the guest list.”

Another source informs that instead of the usual suspects of a Bollywood party, this guest list is specially designed to focus on young talent from the industry. “The guest list doesn’t have regular A-listers but young superstars, musicians as well as independent filmmakers. India is a prime market for the phone major, which is why they decided to meet young achievers to understand the psyche of their young target audience. The gathering will include creative as well as business people from the industry.”

Will the videshi guests get a taste of desi khatirdari? “With so many young guns in the house, bonhomie is a given. They will bring the house down!”

"Government is comparing us to the gambling industry": Bollywood up in arms against GST

Industry shocked over government's decision to put cinema services, including tickets, under highest tax slab
Bharati Dubey (MID-DAY; May 22, 2017)

The film industry has been left shaken with the government putting cinema services, including tickets, under the 28 per cent tax bracket in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, contrary to their prediction of a five to 12 per cent rate slab. Touted as the biggest tax reform in India, GST was expected to lower the tax burden for the industry, which has recently witnessed tough times with quite a few single-screen theatres shutting shop.

Producer N R Pachisia says, "They are comparing us to the gambling industry. The worst sufferers will be the regional film industries and states with low or no entertainment tax. The industry needs to have a meeting with government officials before the tax is implemented. If not a roll-back, they should consider a reduction."

The business of cinema has not really been great in the past few years and 28 per cent taxation on cinema services has caught the industry off-guard. Ramesh Taurani of Indian Film and Television Producers Council is concerned that footfalls in theatres will dip sharply and in turn, affect box office collections.

Producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, who heads the Film and Television Producers Guild of India, echoes Taurani's sentiments: "It is disheartening that the government does not see the immense contribution that the homegrown film production sector can have in enhancing the soft power of the country. We are one of the only local film industries in the world to have withstood the onslaught of Hollywood so far."

Director Vishesh Bhatt points out that entertainment tax from local bodies has not been absorbed in GST. "Our film industry has provided entertainment for decades largely without government support. This makes watching movies, a basic form of entertainment, a sin. Countries around the world are promoting cinema to support their indigenous talent. Our government is killing art and popular culture."

Among the rare voices to welcome GST is Amit Khanna. The former Reliance Entertainment chief says the industry will benefit from GST in the long run as it will 'pass through credit gains'.

Check out prominent stars at the birthday bash of Mohit Suri

MUMBAI MIRROR (April 13, 2017)

Actress Udita Goswami who was in a relationship with director Mohit Suri for nine years before the couple tied the knot in 2013, played the perfect hostess at her filmmaker-husband’s 36th birthday at their suburban home. Their daughter, Devi, was the centre of attention, even cutting the birthday cake for her dad.

Shraddha, who has acted in three Mohit Suri directorials, including her claim to fame, Aashiqui 2, fondly calls Mohit ‘Momdi’ while he had nicknamed her ‘Chhotu’. The 30-year-old actress had company in her Aashiqui 2 co-star, Aditya Roy Kapur, and her Half Girlfriend hero, Arjun Kapoor, who arrived with Chetan Bhagat, whose book Mohit has adapted, and his wife Anusha.

Among the guests was also Sidharth Malhotra, along with several of Mohit’s assistants and filmmakers like Goldie Behl and sister Srishti Arya, Tanuj Garg and Ken Ghosh. Mohit’s cousin, Vishesh Bhatt, arrived with wife Kanika and sister Sakshi. The conversation centred around his upcoming release. While he’s both nervous and excited, Udita, who was often on the sets, is optimistic about its fate.

Begum Jaan declared tax free in Jharkhand

Vidya Balan and Gauahar Khan in Srijit Mukherjee’s Begum Jaan
MID-DAY (April 10, 2017)

Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming release, Begum Jaan, is undeniably painting the town red. The film has been declared tax free in Jharkhand from its release day — April 14. Starring Vidya Balan in a compelling avatar, the movie not only promises path breaking performances, but also a hard hitting narrative that is sure to remain etched in the audience’s memory for a long time to come. Vidya plays a brothel madam.

A better part of Begum Jaan, set in the pre-Partition era, has been shot in Jharkhand. In fact, this is the first film of such scale to be shot almost entirely in the state.

Producer Vishesh Bhatt says, “Jharkhand played a lovely host. I extend a big thanks to the state government for this gesture. It will help the film to be available to more people because of the low ticket prices from day one.” What’s more, it has got a Rs 2 crore subsidy under Government Policy of Promotion of Jharkhand as a Film Destination.

Mukherji and Bhatt tweeted about the development yesterday, thanking the chief minister, Raghubar Das, for making the movie tax free.

Begum Jaan also features Ila Arun, Gauahar Khan, Pallavi Sharda, Rajit Kapoor, Ashish Vidyarthi, Chunky Pandey, Vivek Mushran, Ridheema Tiwari, Flora Saini, Priyanka Setia, Raviza Chauhan, Mishti Chakraborty, Poonam Singh Rajput, Sumit Nijhawan, Pitobash and Rajesh Sharma along with Naseeruddin Shah in a special appearance. The film is produced by Mukesh Bhatt, Vishesh Bhatt and Play Entertainment.

Vidya Balan's period drama Begum Jaan in trouble?

Three HoDs, of production design, costume and cinematography, have quit a few weeks before the film rolls
Natasha Coutinho & Avinash Lohana (MUBMAI MIRROR; May 24, 2016)

The Hindi remake of Srijit Mukherji's Rajkahini, Begum Jaan, featuring Vidya Balan in the lead as the madam of a brothel, which was to kick-start in a fortnight's time has hit a roadblock following a series of unceremonious exits.

A source informed Mirror, "The production team had major budgeting issues, which made many of the crew members sceptical about the project. Three department heads who are big industry names, cinematographer Ravi K Chandran, production designers Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborty and costume designer Payal Saluja, have quit because the makers were cutting corners."

Trouble started when the film's location was changed from Punjab where the story is set, to Hyderabad, then Rajasthan and finally Kolkata, as the schedule drew closer. "The script is brilliant but the technicians didn't want to compromise on quality. The makers are now looking for replacements at a short notice and meanwhile have started erecting the set in Kolkata from May 17."

Begum Jaan is set in the aftermath of the Partition and focuses on how it affects 11 women who live in a brothel that is suddenly bang in the middle of the newly-chalked Line of Control, with half in India and the other half in Pakistan. This brings an upheaval in the lives of these sex workers who fear that outside these walls they will be torn apart by predators.

Chandran insisted that he had dropped out over date issues while the film's co-producer Vishesh Bhatt told Mirror, "As far as Mr Ravi Chandran is concerned, he left the project due to personal reasons. And for the others, the matter was discussed and evaluated by the production and direction teams. They have taken a decision in the interest of the film and the story. I stand by them."

The Bhatts have their movie model right

Meena Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 30, 2015)

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and his producer brother Mukesh Bhatt inherited their movie empire from their father Nanabhai Bhatt. But their triumph lies in the fact that they have personally contributed to the Bhatt school of cinema with their creativity and have made it an indigenous brand within Bollywood.

Their banner Vishesh Films, named after Mukesh's filmmaker son
Vishesh, is today a trusted name in the market. If you check even their recent records - say from 2011 to 2014, one can clearly make note that this banner has had seven notable films with six different directors. Today, they release their Khamoshiyan, a film that has enviable music and a fresh star cast. Vishesh, who now holds the baton for this movie company, says he is in a happy place. Stating that his dad and uncle are the flag-bearers of the company, he humbly admits to being the 'go-to man'.

Asked to explain, Vishesh simply says, “I'm the bridge between the new creative talent we have been engaging and the more experienced think tank that we have at home. Our endeavour is not only to engage newer actors and filmmakers, but to also ensure that we do not repeat the genres. If you notice, the bouquet of films that we have given in the last three years has had a Citylights on one hand and a Jannat 2 on the other. Clearly, we are striving to strike a balance with the different cinema we are putting out.“ Summing up their achievements, the young turk adds, “Our movies have worked at the box office and have also found a place on the television viewership rating charts. Not to forget, the melody of our music has dominated before and after the films' release.“

Like indie filmmakers, the Bhatts pride themselves on not being solely dependent on a particular actor, director or technician. The production house, which has been in the business for over 25 years, has given the Hindi film industry an array of talent. The directors include Anurag Basu, Mohit Suri, Hansal Mehta, Vishesh Bhatt, Kunal Deshmukh and Vishal Mahadkar.

The list of actors is just as impressive with Emraan Hashmi, Aditya Roy Kapur, Esha Gupta, Shraddha Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari, Patralekhaa and Manav Kaul.

While it has nurtured music directors like Pritam, Ankit Tiwari, Mithoon and Jeet Gannguli and singers Arijit Singh and Palak Muchhal, it has also given the industry writers like Shagufta Rafique, Sanjay Masoom and Amit Masurkar.

Summer of 2015 will see the first 3D thriller - Mr X directed by Vikram Bhatt on April 17 followed by love saga, Hamari Adhuri Kahani directed by Mohit Suri on June 12.

Later in the year will be the release of Love Games, a romantic thriller by Vikram Bhatt and Vishesh's next in 2016.
