Hansal Mehta to make a biopic on Sanjay Gandhi

Priya Gupta (BOMBAY TIMES; July 3, 2015)

The eminent late journalist Vinod Mehta had written a book on the life of Sanjay Gandhi titled The Sanjay Story. We have learnt that prior to Vinod passing away, the rights to the book were acquired to be made into a film. The film that is yet untitled will go on the floors next year after Hansal Mehta completes Simran with Kangana Ranaut this year and will be directed and co-produced by the National Award-winning director Hansal himself. This will be the first feature film ever made on any member of the first family of Indian politics the 'Gandhis'. Quoting Vinod Mehta, “To engage with the present, the country must come to terms with the past.“ It's interesting to note that Hansal has announced his film in the 40th year of the Emergency.

Tigmanshu Dhulia debunks rumours surrounding Meena Kumari biopic

Apoorva Rao (DNA; April 18, 2015)

The biopic on yesteryear actress Meena Kumari starring Kangana Ranaut is definitely happening, confirmed Tigmanshu Dhulia. He has told us that he’s not suspending the work on the biopic yet. Controversy over the movie erupted recently after Tajdar Amrohi, Meena Kumari’s stepson, objected to Dhulia’s plans, claiming they have not taken the permission from the actress’ family.

The director clarifies that there is no room for any objection. “We have the rights to the book by Vinod Mehta. The book has been in the public domain for over 20-25 years. If we are basing our entire film on the book, nobody should have an objection to that,” the National Award-winning director said.

The director also plans to discuss the film with the yesteryear actress’ family before going on floors. “We will approach Amrohi as he is her family and for our research and to get some details. We will not make the film without his blessings,” said Dhulia.

But the rights to the film was not the only contentious point as Amrohi also objected to casting Kangana Ranaut as his stepmom. He had said that the Queen actress is “anything but Meena Kumari and does not suit the role”. To add to the conflict, Amrohi himself is making a film on Meena Kumari’s life and has said that the shooting for the film, titled Meenabakamaal has already begun.

Kangana Ranaut to play Meena Kumari?

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 20, 2015)\

Mirror was the first to report (March 5) that Tigmanshu Dhulia is making a biopic of yesteryears' Tragedy Queen, Meena Kumari. The film is an adaptation of late journalist, Vinod Mehta's book, Meena Kumari: The Classic Biography. The actress passed away in her prime but her performance in films like Pakeezah, Saahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and Dil Apna aur Preet Parai made her a revered icon.

Now, Mirror has learnt that the biopic's producers, including Sunil Bohra who owns the rights to the book, have taken the project to Kangana Ranaut. The actress was given a copy of the book and found it "absolutely riveting".

Kangana has previously played an '70s star in Milan Luthria's Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai while her character in Mohit Suri's Woh Lamhe was inspired by actress Parveen Babi. However, playing Meena will be a challenge as the film will explore the actress's rise, the men in her life and her struggle to cope with fame which resulted in an alcohol addiction which led to her death at the age of 39.

The film will start by the end of this year. "Kangana is looking at her date diary and is hoping to accommodate the film in August-September. The research has begun and a formal announcement will be made soon," adds the source.

Tigmanshu chose not to respond to our text messages.

Tigmanshu Dhulia to direct biopic on Meena Kumari?

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 5, 2015)

After making a biopic on athlete-turned-dacoit Paan Singh Tomar, Tigmanshu Dhulia has now found his muse in 'Tragedy Queen' Meena Kumari.

Mirror has learnt that the director, who is currently working on the Indian remake of the French film, Le Lyonnais (titled Yaara), will helm a film documenting the life of the yesteryear actress.

The film is an adaptation of journalist Vinod Mehta's book, Meena Kumar: The Classic Biography.

Tigmanshu is a self-confessed fan of the actress and modelled Mahie Gill's character in his Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster series on Meena Kumari, an alcoholic who died at the age of 39.

Says a source close to the development, "Tigmanshu's been working on the idea for some time now. He has found the right source material in Mehta's book which has been widely praised by critics and fans. He will start work onthe film by the end of this year."

When contacted, Tigmanshu was non-committal. "I am definitely keen on making the film but at the moment nothing has been signed so I can't comment on the development."

Though Mehta remained unavailable for comment his wife confirmed that a film is being made on his book.
