I am a good actor, too. People will know that now (with Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan)-Vijender Singh

With his acting comeback, pugilist Vijender Singh hopes to punch above his weight
Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 23, 2023)
It’s after nine years that Vijender Singh is giving Bollywood another chance. Starring alongside Salman Khan in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (KKBKKJ), the boxing ace is confident to put across the message that he’s just as proficient facing the camera as he is in the ring.
Singh, who was last seen in Fugly in 2014, plays the antagonist in KKBKKJ, a job that has in the past been entrusted to performers like Sonu Sood and Prakash Raj. How that came to pass was courtesy a phone call from Khan. “Last year, I was training in the United Kingdom when, all of a sudden, I started getting calls from [Salman] Bhai. I avoid phone calls after 10, and he was calling me at midnight or 1am. I thought aise hi pareshan kar rahe hain,” Singh laughs.
And so, intending to get back at Khan lightheartedly, the 37-year-old called him back one day. “He asked me, ‘Viju, where are you?’ He then told me about the project. I asked if he would star in the film and if I would have scenes with him — and agreed. I didn’t ask anything else ke story kya hai, negative hai ya positive hai.”
The pugilist reveals Khan has taken on a bigger role as Singh’s mentor. “I am doing something with Bhai, but can’t talk about it. He is guiding me this time, telling me what and what not to do. He’s like my godfather. Bollywood mein unhone mujhe dobaara bulaaya, saying ke tu aaja, main hun tere saath”.
But what kept him away all this while? The Olympic medalist shares, “I got busy with professional boxing in the UK, and had to stay there for that, which led to the delay. I got some offers in between but couldn’t take them up as my base was in the UK. I came to India after Covid, and am now starting again,” says the boxer, who is determined to keep his “focus on both his careers”.
When it comes to acting, Singh knows well to roll with the punches and make the best use of his opportunities. “I am a good boxer, but I am a good actor, too. People will know that now. Acting is all about expressing and feeling. I have seen a gamut of emotions — from being from a village, jidhar humaare paas kuchh nahin tha, to seeing stardom and dealing with controversies. I’ve been through a lot and can express all emotions,” he ends.
If Salman Khan says movie hai, toh hai-Vijender Singh

Olympic medalist-boxer Vijender Singh shares how he came on board as villain for Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan at Salman’s behest
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; April 19, 2023)
Boxer-politician Vijender Singh and actor Salman Khan go back over a dozen-odd years. Singh first met the actor in 2008, soon after the former became the first Indian boxer to win a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics. Over the years, their mutual respect and fondness germinated into friendship. So much so that when the superstar offered Singh a role in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (KKBKKJ), the boxer came on board, no questions asked.
“I was doing my fight training in Manchester last year when he called and said, ‘Viju, let’s do this movie. There’s an interesting role, and you have to do it.’ Two months later, I met him at his residence for the narration. When he approached me, I didn’t even ask him what role I’d be playing. If Salman bhai says movie hai, toh hai,” recounts Singh.
In the family drama that also stars Venkatesh, Pooja Hegde and Bhumika Chawla, among others, Singh plays the “hot-tempered and arrogant” baddie, Mahavir. Acting isn’t new to the boxer, who previously featured in Fugly (2014). But he credits Khan for teaching him the ropes of the craft.
“Salman bhai taught me a lot of things, including how to modulate my voice. On the first day of shooting, my voice was too loud. Then Bhai advised me to say my dialogues softly. We have many action scenes together. As boxers, we punch with our fists closed tight. Bhai asked me to leave my fists slightly open as closed-fist punches land too hard.”
The boxer is keen to take on more acting offers. “I want to do more Hindi and south movies. I’d love to do a web series that revolves around boxing, but I don’t know why people don’t make them. Positive or negative roles [don’t matter], but if I play an antagonist, I’d love to do what Amrish Puri ji or Pran ji did — roles that inspired generations.”
After appeals from PETA India and John Abraham, BookMyShow stops selling circus tickets

Move by popular ticketing platform comes after high-profile campaign by PETA, backed by celebs like John Abraham and boxer Vijender Singh
Shirish Vaktania (MID-DAY; August 30, 2022)
Heeding appeals from PETA India, BookMyShow has dropped from its ticketing platform circuses that use animals for entertainment. The decision by the movie- and event-ticketing company comes days after the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals put up a billboard outside BookMyShow’s Andheri office highlighting animal cruelty at circuses and also met the company officials. For now, the portal has stopped selling tickets for Asiad and Great Gemini circuses.
Five months ago, PETA India had also roped in Bollywood actor John Abraham to urge BookMyShow to discontinue tickets for circuses that use animals. On its billboard, PETA India featured boxer Vijender Singh with the message: “Knock Out Cruelty: Boycott Circuses”.
Sources said the ticketing company has expressly assured PETA India that it would form an official policy regarding circuses using animals.
Hiraj Laljani, PETA India’s associate manager of media and celebrity projects, said, “Few months back we approached Bollywood star John Abraham who is also an animal lover and requested him to write a letter on behalf of PETA India to BookMyShow to stop selling animal circus tickets from their portal.”
In the letter to BookMyShow, John Abraham cited a circus in Pune that was apparently using animals not registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). It pointed to the act that involved swallowing and regurgitating fish.
“I hope that you will not side with cruelty and that BookMyShow will do the right thing by implementing a policy not to promote, sell a permit the sale of tickets of circuses that use animals,” it said.
Acting on the letter and PETA India’s billboard outside its office, BookMyShow on Saturday dropped two circuses from its portal.
PETA India’s director Poorva Joshipura told mid-day, “Circuses worldwide are moving towards using only consenting human performers who are free to come and go, get paid, and can retire—unlike animals who are caged, chained, and forced to do tricks for their entire lives under the threat of punishment.”
Commending BookMyShow for dropping the two circuses from its portal, Joshipura said, the e-ticketing platform has sold tickets for Rambo Circus whose owner was recently arrested for various violations of animal protection laws and let out on bail. “The Animal Welfare Board of India recently sought action against Ajanta Circus for using animals without the required certification.”
The PETA India official added, “Circuses are so notorious for their cruelty to animals and disregard of animal protection laws that in 2017, 2019, and 2020, the AWBI advised the central government to pass legislation to stop the use of animals in circuses. Last year, the Central Zoo Authority cancelled its recognition of the Great Golden Circus, the only circus that was still using elephants for performances.”
Officials from the animal rights organization said they recently collected appeals from 100 veterinarians from different states and got a petition signed by 1,00,000 students from across the country urging the minister of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairy to bring in laws to prohibit the use of animals in circuses.
My first day was like having butterflies in my stomach and anxiety kicking in together-Kiara Advani

As told to Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 1, 2020)
I went to audition for Fugly after someone I knew told me that the director (Kabir Sadanand) was looking for actors. Most of the auditions I had gone for before, would take months for a call back. But here, I got a call from producer Ashvini Yardi on the very next day. She was really impressed with my audition and called me to meet her and Akshay (Kumar) sir, who was co-producing the film. I went with my parents to their office, and the next thing I knew, I had signed the film. It all happened surprisingly fast, and it took me some time to comprehend. But I guess it was in my destiny.
After that, we had a month of workshops. Our acting coach came from Delhi to train all four of us (including Mohit Marwah, Vijender Singh and Arfi Lamba), making us work on our skills and helping us bond.
I had wanted to become an actor ever since I was a child. So, naturally, I was excited that it was all finally happening. However, when I reached the set on my first day after getting my hair and makeup done at Leh, I got cold feet. I wasn’t sure if I’ll be able to do it and started wondering if I was good enough for the job. It was like having butterflies in my stomach and anxiety kicking in together.
We started the shoot with the song “Banjarey”. I remember being on a hilltop and sitting atop a car’s bonnet. I had to break into impromptu dance moves and there was no set choreography, as the shot was about just having fun. I began alone in a close-up shot. Since it was a moving shot, I joined my co-actors as the camera followed me. After the shot, everyone on the set applauded all of us. But at that time, I wasn’t sure whether it was because I was good or just because it was my first shot. Although, when I watched the song, I was quite happy with what we had done.
I don’t think any actor can ever forget their first day and first shot. When I gave mine, I realised that this is what I needed to do for the rest of my life.

Sonam Kapoor, Athiya Shetty, Shilpa Shetty support animal activist's effort in helping ailing cows, bulls

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; August 6, 2018)
Having repeatedly spoken up on issues pertaining to animal welfare, Bollywood’s brightest didn’t disappoint when an activist took to social media to reveal that he was accepting donations for an animal welfare NGO. A PETA India associate director, Sachin Bangera, had stated that he was accepting food and medication for bullocks, Gunya and Hanmanth, and a cow, Meena, for the organisation, Animal Rahat, as part of his birthday festivities. Animal admirers Sonam K Ahuja, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Aathiya Shetty and Pooja Bhatt, along with boxing champion Vijender Singh, were among the first to lend their support.
Shilpa tells mid-day of her friend, Bangera, “He was trying to raise funds to sponsor the food and medicines of two bullocks and a cow at a sanctuary. I appreciated that, hence, I posted a tweet [about his effort] so that it could reach more people.”
Athiya speaks fondly of the organisation Bangera helms before adding, “I love animals, and believe that, since they don’t have a voice, we should support them. We should fight the battles that they can’t.”
Talking about the initiative, Bangera says that the team will aim to raise funds for a month, post which they will decide if further action must be taken. “The bullocks and cow are housed at the NGO in Sangli, along with the other animals that have been rescued from slavery or abandonment. The more the donation we receive, the better the care the animals will receive. The goal is to raise at least Rs 20,000, which will be sufficient to take care of these three animals for a month. I’d love to sponsor more animals if they’ve been abused or tortured.”
Bangera says that he had to do little to get help from Bollywood, given that most of them are associated with his organisation. Bhatt, he says, is deeply involved in rescue work. “She rescues animals in distress, sterilizes community cats and feeds them. She inspires me to do more.”
Randeep Hooda & Vijender Singh to do a film together

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 18, 2016)
Randeep Hooda cheered on
from the stands as his friend, boxer Vijender Singh, claimed the WBO
Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title, defeating former WBC European
champion, Kerry Hope, at Delhi's Thyagraj Stadium on Saturday. The
elated actor paints a word picture, “The atmosphere in the stadium was
electric. The crowd went 'ahhh' at every punch Kerry took, and with 'ohhh' for the ones that landed on Vijender.“
The 39-year-old actor may be a cricket buff but has kept track of his friend's boxing triumphs.“It was his longest bout so far and I believe a great exercise for him. He wasn't in the best form after suffering a few injuries but he did extremely well despite the odds. It's a great feeling when sports other than cricket get so much support from people,“ he exults.
He later caught India's star pugilist in his element at an after-party. “Vijender was thrilled that he hadn't let the country down and managed to uphold the Jatt pride. It was a great evening,“ says Randeep. Cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, boxer Mary Kom and actresses Neha Dhupia and Lin Laishram were also present to lend their support to the boxer.
The two Jatt boys go back a long way. Randeep has known Vijender since before he won an Olympic medal in 2008, as also boxers like Akhil Kumar. “Mr Chiranjeevi who has trained me for a film in the past, coached all these boxers when they were young. I was supposed to do a film on boxing earlier, titled Bhiwani,“ Randeep says, adding that there may be a film collaboration on the cards with Vijender. “We discussed an idea. We'll take our conversation forward soon.“
And what if there's a biopic on Vijender happening sometime in the future? Would he play him? “I would if I am not too old for the role. Or else I can portray his coach,“ Randeep signs off with a laugh.

Their coach and mentor died in Bhiwani, on August 13, 2000, just 15 days before he was to receive the Dronacharya Award. He was cremated in a stadium on India’s Independence Day. His wife, Angoori Devi, accepted the award. He also did not also get to celebrate his student’s big Olympic win. “The makers haven’t approached Vijender yet but will if needed. They plan to shoot in Delhi, Vaishnodevi, Haryana, including his village Umarvas, and Thailand. They will also use actual boxers, will fly them down from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries. This is not the story of an underdog but a champ who was never defeated in the ring but lost to politics, with a love story woven in,” says the source.
Sam Fernandez, former COO of Vidhu Vinod Chopra who enjoyed a
stint with 20th Century Fox, has bought the rights to Hawa Singh’s
story. He will produce the film with his partner, John and a studio.
“The director finalised by July and the film is expected to roll in
October,” adds the source. Sam confirmed the news, “Yes, I am making a
biopic on
Captain Hawa Singh.”
Quiz the source on John and he says he’s the only
actor who can play this man who was a giant both inside the ring
and off it. John says, “We are both six-feet-one and weigh 94 kgs. His
son, Sanjay Singh, daughter-in-law and two grandkids, came to see me.
I've
not signed it yet but the family, Sam and I are all very excited about
this project.”
Sarbjit success bash: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan came alone, Randeep Hooda wasn't left alone

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 28, 2016)
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was the first to arrive at the success bash of her own film, Sarbjit. She came in alone on Thursday without hubby Abhishek and explained his absence saying, "He wanted me to enjoy all the spotlight."
Ash-Abhi have been in the news after the latter walked away from his biwi at the premiere of her film, leaving her standing redfaced on the red carpet. Ash sat with her parents and brother while Abhi watched and exited with parents, Amitabh and Jaya. The grapevine was buzzing that all's not well in paradise for the Mr and Mrs. Then, to put a stop to the rumours, the couple posed hand-in-hand on the red carpet, a little longer than usual, at a recent event in the Capital.
When on stage at the gig, the two were asked who took longer to dress up and Abhi quipped, "I do because it takes a lot to make me look this good, but she just wakes up looking like that in the morning," to which Ash responded with an endless, "Awwwww."
The other actress of the film, Richa Chadha, waited till the assembled media had left to make a here-now-gone-now appearance because she didn't want to answer any queries about major chunks of her role being cut from the final edit. "That's why there were no pictures of Richa at the bash," pointed out a guest.
Buzz is, a bouquet of celebrity invites were sent out but the only ones who attended were the cast and crew with the exception of popular boxer Vijender Singh who walked in with Randeep Hooda. Randeep was the star of the night and was mobbed in the hotel lobby by a horde of female fans. They started out asking for selfies and ended up as an infatuated group of women wanting to kiss the Haryanvi hero and tear off his shirt.
"The security had to be called to free Randeep from the clutches of these Eves. But the gentleman that he is, Randeep waited, clicked selfies with them, before dashing off," the guest adds. Once inside, Vijender and he threw a few punches for the paparazzi before partying the night away.
Salman Khan to play a boxer in Sultan?

Subhash K Jha (DNA; March 10, 2015)
Boxing might well be the new cricket. The nation might currently be obsessed with the exploits of the boys in blue, but Bollywood is more fascinated with men in shorts right now.
Actor-producer John Abraham has expressed a desire to make a film on boxing and cast former world champion David Haye, with whom he has collaborated for a flagship fitness-cum-boxing centre. Ranbir Kapoor, reportedly, will be seen boxing as a street fighter in Bombay Velvet. Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra are playing boxers in Brothers and now, it can be revealed that Salman Khan, too, will play one in Ali Abbas Zafar’s Sultan.
A source reveals, “In Sultan, Salman plays the title role of a 40-year-old boxer. It’d require a huge amount of preparation. Salman would have to change his entire physique and body language. It’d entail many months of a strict exercise regime and a new diet control so he can acquire a boxer’s body. With his heavy commitments, Salman is not sure how he will be able to give Sultan the time, attention and single-minded focus it requires.”
Akshay already has a boxer’s physique. But Salman is committed to finish Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Kabir Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He can’t afford to shed his current look. How he will manage to make time and the body for this role is something that the actor has to figure out.
Brothers hits the screen this year and reportedly, Sultan releases on Eid 2016. Why is boxing suddenly hot in B-Town? It’s thanks to boxers like Mary Kom, Vijender Singh, Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar, AL Lakra, and Dinesh Kumar and their ilk who have brought glory to India at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. The once-ignored sport is now getting due credit and is grabbing eyeballs. And there’s even Honey Singh’s boxing league!
Maine Boxing Kiya
In his first major role in Maine Pyaar Piya, Prem (Salman Khan) gets into a boxing match with Jeevan (Mohnish Behl), to defend his girlfriend Suman (Bhagyashree)and defeats him. It was an important turning point in the film. Many scenes show a pair of boxing gloves hanging over the door in Prem's room. It is reported Sooraj Barjatya has once again incorporated a boxing sequence featuring Salman in his next film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
Vijender Singh on Salman
"Salman is a great boxer and is fit. He knows boxing well and we have spoken about punches. He trained in Cuba for three months during Ek Tha Tiger. In fact, he gave me tips on boxing. He told me he almost played a tournament, but dropped the idea as he got busy in shoots."
Past pugilists
In 1984, Mithun Chakbraborty played a boxer in Raj N Sippy's Boxer. The film is best remembered for Mithunda's climactic fight with Sharat Saxena in the boxing arena. Anil Kapoor also played a boxer in Indra Kumar's Rishta, loosely based on The Champ. But nothing like the Sylvester Stallone series of Rocky films has ever been attempted in Hindi.
Vijender Singh knocks out Evelyn Sharma

It seems Olympian Vijender Singh's rugged looks have charmed the petite Evelyn Sharma. The model-turned-actress of German origin, who was seen in bit roles in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Main Tera Hero, was judging a modelling event last Saturday. The boxer, who recently made his Bollywood debut with Kabir Sadanand's Fugly, was also on the panel.
An eyewitness told Mirror, "The duo met and sparks flew. Evelyn didn't hide her feelings and Vijender loved all the attention that was coming his way."
After the event, the two hung around in the vicinity. When we contacted Evelyn gushed, "Vijender is really cute. I thought being a boxer he would be rough and tough, but he's such a gentle guy!"

BOMBAY TIMES (June 12, 2014)
- A sequence required Jimmy Sheirgill, Mohit Marwah, Vijender Singh and Arfi Lamba to dive into the lake, with an army personnel supervising the shoot. They would do push-ups and squats before entering the water to warm up and come out as soon as they started turning blue.
- Once during the shoot, Mohit and Kiara were amused to find Vijender's costume floating in the water just after he and Arfi had jumped into the lake.
- Since the actors would shoot for about 16 hours a day and had absolutely no time to workout, Mohit, a Delhi boy, organised home cooked food to at least ensure they had a healthy diet.
- On a day off, Mohit and Kiara gatecrashed a wed ding party in Chhatarpur (near Delhi), just to enjoy themselves.
- The film was shot in 37 real locations in and around Delhi, none of which was kept out of bounds for the public during the shoot.
- Director Kabir Sadanand ordered Kiara to hurl the t choicest of abuses at him during an acting work shop. Reason: He wanted her to get into the charac ter of a feisty Delhi girl.
- During a dance sequence s picturised at Connaught Place, Kiara suffered many bruises on her legs and was unable to walk. Finally, Vijender and Arfi had to lift her to the vanity van parked on the streets.
- Jimmy's character Chautala has been inspired by a real-life cop in Delhi.
- Mohit, who has never driven a tractor, not only drove one, but also performed stunts with it for a scene.
Fugly, produced by Grazing Goat Pictures, releases tomorrow.
Just like Salman Khan, I don't talk faltu mein to anyone-Vijender Singh

Priya Gupta (BOMBAY TIMES; June 1, 2014)
Vijender Singh, 29, is emotional, transparent and a moohphat. He loves everything he does, be it boxing, modelling or acting. Germany may have gifted him his wife and Mumbai, his English, but he remains proud of being Haryanvi. Over an hour-long conversation with Bombay Times ahead of his debut film Fugly, he talks about his ziddi nature, his ambitious dreams and why he loves his wife Archana the most in the world. Excerpts.
How did you get into boxing?I belong to a farmer family from Kaluwas village in Haryana. My father was a bus driver in Haryana Roadways. I had gone from my school in Bhiwani for gymnastics, where they asked me to do some exercises that I was not able to. They were doing shadow boxing outside. I too started doing it with them. My coach Jagdish Singh saw me doing that and suggested that I do boxing and that is how I started learning how to box. Sports is big in Haryana. My first trip outside Haryana was to Kolkata, when I was 14. It was my first national championship, but I lost. I participated again and became a national champion. I was selected to go to Germany in 2001 for an international competition, but did not have a passport. They told me that I would not be able to participate as the passport could not be made within the short span of time, as the regional passport officer was very khadus type. But I requested her and she was kind enough to have done it and I was able to go. I was the first person from my family to go abroad. It was in 2008 when I got recognised for winning a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics and life changed after that. It was after that, that I came to Mumbai for the first time. I had seen the sea for the first time in my life and staying in JW Marriott, I felt like a star. The government of Haryana supported me, promoted me and made me a Deputy Superintendent of Police, gave me cash money, land, everything. I am very rich right now.
Talk about your father? My father always ensured that I was never short of money for whatever I wanted. Mujhe paise ki kami kabhi nahi mehsoos hui. I didn't need luxuries but whatever I wanted, like a bike or a cycle, I got it. I am very stubborn. Mujhe kuch bhi chahiye, toh chahiye. For instance, once when I was a kid I wanted a video game, so I did not eat for three days till my father got it for me. I feel strongly towards my father. He knows me very well. And knows what I feel and what I need. I know that he loves me even though he doesn't say it. I know he has worked so hard. I went for the boxing championship and lost, but he never said, 'You lost.' He would always say, 'Doesn't matter, you will win next time.' He always supported me, be it for boxing or for my decision to get married or for getting into Bollywood. He is always happy with me and likes me for being self-made.
Who do you love the most in the world? My wife Archana. I met her during one of my visits to the German embassy to get a visa. She was working in an IT company and she had also come to apply. This was my sixth trip to Germany. We said a 'hi' to each other and I asked her, 'Where are you going?' It was a stupid question as obviously she had come for her German visa and thus was obviously going to Germany. I later laughed at myself. Looking at me, she did not believe that I was a boxer, but she later saw my picture in the paper and then believed me. We became friends, started seeing each other and post winning at the Olympics, we got married. I like everything about her. She is caring and we love each other. I went to Germany 7-8 times and I won my first gold medal from there. Germany is lucky for me.
To be a boxer, do you need to be aggressive? In Haryana, cricket is not as popular. We have more wrestling and boxing. Being a boxer, your anger or frustration comes out anyways. So, I am otherwise very cool and fun-loving. You keep getting hurt. But it is great fun hitting others. I love watching boxing, but when I go into the ring you just want to hit the person in front of you as you just want to win at any cost. I am otherwise very emotional and easily cry watching Bollywood films. When I told my mother I wanted to be a boxer, she said, 'Okay, but don't get hurt, otherwise no one will get married to you.'
How did you get your Bollywood break in Fugly? One night Akshay Kumar sir called me when I was sleeping in Delhi and said, 'Hi, I am Akshay Kumar.' I didn't believe him and told him, 'Why are you troubling me? Put down the phone.' And I disconnected the phone. He called me again. This time, I recognised his voice and believed him. He wanted me to do a fight with him in Mumbai for Make-A-Wish Foundation and I came to Mumbai for a few days. While I was in Mumbai, he just asked me, 'Can you act?' I said, 'Haan bhai, aap kar sakte ho, toh main bhi kar sakta hoon.' I told him how a sportsperson can do anything. I auditioned for Fugly and got the role. I got to dance with two of my icons, Salman bhai and Akshay sir, and also got to perform to a song Good In Bed. There is a myth that sportspeople cannot act, but I hope people see the movie and say Vijender Singh is a superstar. When Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali can act, so why not me? Akshay sir is my mentor and like my elder brother. Salman bhai took training of boxing in Cuba and during the break of the title song Fugly, he taught me boxing. Salman bhai saw the trailer and told me, 'Achcha kiya tune.' Salman bhai does not talk phaltu to anyone and when he talks, he talks from his heart. I am also like him. He is fine if you like him and he is also fine if you don't. I too am like that. I am hardworking. Kehte hain ki sapne dil se chaho toh ho jatey hain. I used to see a lot of dreams as a child. I used to keep thinking of meeting Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan and today, I have not only met them but also danced with them. I used to always be stylish. In 2003, when I was training in boxing, I would tell my coach, 'You wait and watch. One day, I will work in films.' Recently, I went back to meet my coach and said 'Dekha coach, sache dil se dekha toh woh hota zaroor hai.' I am reaching there slowly. I am very ambitious and don't get satisfied easily. This is life. Don't be satisfied. If you are satisfied, you are out, you are like a dead person.
What really happened during the drug controversy?
I trust people very easily. I had no idea where my friends took my car. It was my car and what was shown was that drugs were found in my car. I was at home in Delhi and my car was at Chandigarh with my friends. This is life and I have learnt a lot from that and will not repeat that mistake. I have decided to not give another person the keys to my house or my car as if anything goes wrong, obviously I will be blamed for it.
How different are films from boxing? Both need a lot of hard work and sincerity. While boxing is about being aggressive, acting is about patience.
Which was your lowest period in life?In 2012 at the London Olympics, I had beaten my opponent from Uzbekistan many times and I was 100% sure I would beat him, but I lost. My fight was at night and I was feeling sleepy, so I thought of catching up for a while on my sleep to be fresh for the match. But when I got up, my energy was gone. I lost that day and I realised that, that was not my day. I felt terrible and that is the worst that I have ever felt. I knew I could have beaten him but couldn't. But rab jo karta hain, changa karta hain. At such times, I just talk to myself and explain to myself and remain positive. I am now training to go to Poland for the Commonwealth Games and I know that rab yahan tak laya hai, toh aage bhi le jayega.

An insider reveals, “Initially, Vijender was a bit hesitant about doing the song with explicit lyrics. But when he heard the track, he fell in love with the beat. But his wife Archana was upset when she heard the lyrics. He told her about the song before it came out so she was aware of it. She found it too racy and felt that Vijender should not be a part of it. She was particularly against the verse that goes, “Fantasy teri bhi mujhe hi bulaegi, ecstasy mein baby bada manayegi, scream karegi mera naam aur gayegi, haay mai mar gayi maa”.
When asked about his wife being miffed, the boxer admits, “When I told her about the song, she was really upset. She clarified with me twice asking is it bad or bed. But I love the song and have started making my entry in the boxing ring during trials with Good in Bed playing in the background.”
I have lost inches, not kilos-Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha talks about her recent weight loss, the 'single' tag she wants to shed, her father's re-entry into active politics, and pairing up with one of his contemporaries.

As an 18-year-old studying fashion designing at SNDT University, Sonakshi Sinha was a regular at the college canteen and not overly concerned about her looks. But when the weighing machine struck 92 kgs, health became a worry. "I couldn't run on the treadmill for more than 10 minutes and would start huffing if I walked up even one flight of stairs," she recalls.
At this point Salman Khan stepped in, urging her to lose weight and become an actress. She lost 30 kilos in two-and-ahalf-years and was signed for Dabbang.
A few years later, Sonakshi however let go of her regime. "I reasoned that after working all day I didn't need to work out," she admits. The kilos piled up again and her weight became a talking point with the press.
"It wasn't that I was sitting at home without work or that my fans had moved away. But journalists kept asking questions which I was forced to answer," she sighs.
Then came a lifestyle change. Her brothers, Luv and Kush, have always been into fitness, and now she too set up a gym on her terrace to work out in the open. She's hired a personal trainer who ensures that she works out for at least 30 minutes no matter how exhausted she is. And the results are stunning. "I've lost inches, not kilos. The dress sizes have dropped just like that," she says snapping her fingers. "I'm more toned now, have the energy to work long hours and am one-third the person I used to be," she laughs, dressed in a pair of fitted jeans and a matching blue tee.
While shooting for Holiday, Sonakshi who plays a boxer, got a few on-set training sessions from Olympian boxer Vijender Singh. That has inspired her to channel her daily frustations onto the punching bag in her home gym. Is some of the anger focused on the trainer who has put her on a starvation diet for a size-zero figure?
She screams, "Starve and me? I am too much of a foodie and after working so hard why should I abstain from things that make me happy? I eat everything, but in moderation. And if I overeat, I burn out the calories. I can never be a size zero even if I wanted. I'm five feet eight inches and have a very Indian frame and a healthy build."
Has she managed to get her parents, Poonam and Shatrughan Sinha, to follow her regime? "They don't even use the treadmill," she sighs. "Dad says he cycles when in Delhi."
Given his recent health problems, didn't the family try to dissuade Shatru from continuing with active politics? "You can't take a man's passion away from him. We made sure that he takes things a bit slowly, but he was positive. He not only recovered fast but also won the elections. I can't wait for them to return from Patna and celebrate his win," she whoops.
Speaking of her father, how did he react to the idea of his daughter romancing his 60-plus contemporary Rajinijkanth in Lingaa? "He was amused but then realised that there couldn't be a better debut for me in Tamil cinema," points out Sonakshi, who has just returned from the first schedule.
"On the first day of the shoot I confessed to Rajini sir that I was nervous. He retorted that he was the one who was nervous. That broke the ice!"
So after that, was it easy to romance a man her father's age? "There no running-around-thetrees. My portion is set in the 1940s and my character believes in him and supports him. The film is told primarily in flashbacks and the age difference is justified," she argues.
Meanwhile, Sonakshi's real life romances have provided plenty of fodder for gossip, the latest being her link-up with Shahid Kapoor. The sunny smile disappears, "I guess it's because our jodi was appreciated in R... Rajkumar. But the fact is that we are not even in touch with each other now. I've completed 12 films in four years and for the last three years I've been working round-the-clock. I need some time to myself. I've been single too long, I would love to change that relationship status but I've just been too busy to find the right match."

Pugilist Vijender Singh is gearing up for his Bollywood debut. But the Lord of the Ring hasn't forgotten the tricks of his trade. Vijender Singh He takes some hard knock, head on, and comes up with some witty punch lines. Excerpts from the interview:
So, you have moved from boxing to Bollywood now...
Right now I'm at the national camp in Patiala, training for the CWG and the Asian Games. The only difference is that we now play songs from Fugly in the gym. Yesterday, I taught my fellow boxers the choreography of the title track. Kafi simple aur catchy steps hain!
That would be Fugly Fugly Kya Hai.... What was it like to shar screen space with Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan?
Amazing! I've met both before but interacting with the superstars on screen, in my debut film, was a different experience.
Are you serious about acting?
Bilkul, acting koi mamuli baat nahin hain. It requires discipline and hard work. There's so much you have to do—laugh, cry, dance, fight—that you can't do in real life. I'm giving it my 100 per cent. But acting will never come in the way of boxing.
It's being said that your boxing career is almost over.
In a democracy people can say anything. Such things only motivate me to do better.
Last March your wife Archana's car was recovered from outside the home of alleged drug dealer Anoop Singh Kahlon during a raid in which 26 kgs of heroin was seized...
Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan and so many celebrities have been embroiled in controversies. If innocent, you're cleared. There was no evidence against me.
Yes, by May, the National Anti-Doping Agency gave you a clean chit. So do you think you were framed?
I'm not saying I was framed. I'm just glad that everything was sorted out and it's over.
There has been talk that you and Olympian Akhil Kumar are constantly at odds?
No, we're good friends. We train together.
So, things are now fine between you two?
(Laughs) It was never not fine.
You're a cop too?
Yes, ACP, Haryana Police.
Do, you feel like Dabangg's Chulbul Pandey?
(Laughs) Nahin. I'm only the police spokesperson, but in future I plan to become an achcha police officer. I'm serious about that career too.
Your Hindi has improved since you entered Bollywood.
(Laughs) Bambai sab sikha deti hai. So has your English! (Laughs) In Mumbai you have to be perfect.
What made you choose Fugly?
Fugly chose me. I was looking for a good banner. And the character has a North Indian flavour. This is the best script I've been offered so far.
Were there other offers too?
Yes, several since I won the Olympic medal.
One was opposite Govinda's daughter Narmada, what's happening with that film?
I have no idea!
Have you signed any other films?
Nahin.
What if Fugly doesn't work?
It will be a superhit. (Laughs) I've always maintained a positive attitude.
You've won many awards in boxing...
Yes, the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna...
You think you would win the Best Debutant award in Bollywood?
Agar mile toh I'll be happy.
Didn't you want a bigger star opposite you in your debut?
If you are a hero, you should be able to draw crowds on your own, like Akshay and Salman. No one cares who their heroines are.
What kind of films do you watch?
I loved Salman's Maine Pyar Kiya and Dabangg and Akshay's Jaanwar and Hera Pheri. I enjoy comedies, even on TV I like watching Kapil Sharma's show. Boxing mein bahut stress hai and comedy is a good stressbuster.
Isn't your wife Archana worried now that you are a Bollywood hero and surrounded by beautiful women?
I'm happy married life and my wife is busy with our nine-month-old son Abir. Why should she worry? Even Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar are married!
Is Abir showing signs of being a boxer?
I want him to do whatever he wants to. I've seen 3 Idiots and learnt from it. His mother is a software engineer.
Your father-in-law Surinder Singh is a known name in Haryana's Congress circles. Do you have political aspirations too?
(Laughs) Joh politics mein hain woh bade khiladi hain. Main toh bas khiladi hoon.
