Actor Varun Dhawan on his girlfriend, and chemistries on and off screen
Jitesh Pillaai (TIMES LIFE; June 2, 2019)
Did October influence you with regard to relationships? It moved me as far as relationships are concerned. It made me realise you never know what’s going to happen next.
The grapevine suggests that you’re getting married to Natasha Dalal this year.
It’s not going to happen this year. I’m not saying I won’t get married but it’s not this soon. If I’m doing all these movies, I need to find the right time for that.
Natasha’s often spotted with your parents. She seems to have become part of the family…
She and I went to school together. So, she knows my parents since ages. She’s been attending functions with my parents before also but it wasn’t photographed then.
What does she add to your life?
She’s my rock, she’s my anchor. She’s the stabilising factor in my life. It’s pretty much like family.
What kind of a boyfriend are you?
In the last couple of years, I’ve been really good. I’ve understood what it’s like to be in a relationship and the whole love vibe. I’m enjoying it. I’m having a great time.
How were you before?
I was much younger na. So, I didn’t understand it completely. But now I’m probably enjoying it more than her. The one who experiences it knows how it feels.
Being the hero of the masses – is that your dream?
Yes. That’s been my aim since the start of my career. I do mass entertainers to please my audience. Having said that, I love my films – Badlapur, October and Sui Dhaaga: Made In India. They taught me a lot. They helped me get in touch with things I feared I’d lose.
Alia Bhatt and you share unbelievable chemistry...
There’s definitely some magic and we both know that. That’s the reason we keep coming back and working together. Otherwise, I can’t work with anyone so many times. We get along as people. Our passions are the same. We both are competitive with each other. As passionately as we care for each other, we fight also. But what’s great is that ours is an honest relationship. It’s not a fake one like, ‘Okay, pack up. See you tomorrow.’ Or ‘How am I looking? Oh very pretty’. Instead, with us, it’s like if you’re not looking good, you’re not looking good and if you’re looking good, you’re looking good.
Is there any film you wish you should have done?
I loved Stree and its concept. I loved what Rajkummar Rao did in the climax because generally everyone thinks of him as a serious actor. I’m happy for him.
Apparently, you were offered 21 crores for Street Dancer 3D. How important is market value for you?
Actually, it’s more than that. The money is coming and it’s good. Though you don’t need that much money to live. Main kya karunga usska?
Do you want a marriage like that of your parents?
One person’s marriage cannot be like that of the other. It has to be in accordance to who you are as a person. What’s on my mind right now is my niece (Rohit and Jaanvi Dhawan’s daughter). I saw her after a while. She pulled my T-shirt and recognised me. I got so excited. I want to go and play with her now.
You would probably make for a fantastic father in the future…
That I don’t know. But I’m a superb chachu right now. You’ve no idea how my family is tripping over her. People just melt when they see her. She’s ruling us.
Varun Dhawan slashes his fees by more than 50% for October?

Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; February 24, 2018)
Having delivered two hits — Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Judwaa 2 (both 2017) — in a year that otherwise witnessed a drought at the box office, it was reported that Varun Dhawan had hiked his fee. But in an interesting development, midday has learnt that the actor apparently slashed his remuneration for Shoojit Sircar’s October.
A source close to Dhawan says, “When Shoojit approached him with the script, he made it clear that it would be another small-budget film, along the lines of what he is known to make. Varun was quite taken by the story and knew that he had to be a part of the project. He readily agreed to cut down his fee for the director.”
While many actors opt for a lower remuneration and hold a stake in the film’s profits, the source adds that Dhawan decided to forego the option.
Another trade insider reveals that although Dhawan had indeed hiked his fee to a whopping Rs 25 crore after the success of Judwaa 2, he did not want to burden the Banita Sandhu-starrer with his market price. The trade insider says, “If you see his filmography, he has consciously mixed the masala fare with films like Badlapur (2015) and now, October. Varun understood that October needs to be made on the right budget to be viable and recover its cost. Since the film was envisioned on a budget of Rs 20 crore, he slashed his fee by more than 50 per cent.”

Endorsement deals and big-budget movies — the current
crop of Bollywood actors have a lot going on. And yes, there is a lot of
money at stake as well. Gaurav Dubey takes a look at how much money is
riding on these young actors
Gaurav Dubey (MID-DAY; April 6, 2014)
Films
get noticed only when there are any one of the three Khans of Bollywood
in it. This may be the widespread assumption, but, of late, the young
brigade of tinsel town has proved that there seems to be no dearth of
talent in Bollywood. They are acting in movies that showcase their
versatility, giving them an edge over their senior counterparts who have
been essaying the same type of roles for years and are typecast.
The young guns are gradually carving a niche in the industry. Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur, Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput and Sidharth Malhotra may be just a few films old, but are bagging big-banner projects as well as endorsement offers. Time was when trade pundits spoke about how much money was riding on the big stars, but now there is a lot at stake even on the younger lot who are making their mark and are being lapped up for lucrative endorsement deals.
Industry opinion
According to filmmaker Rohan Sippy, “Sushant was good in Kai Po Che and Shuddh Desi Romance and he is a terrific dancer. Varun and Sidharth are also doing well. My father saw Varun’s new film (Main Tera Hero) and couldn’t stop raving about him. He has all the characteristics of a young Salman Khan. When it comes to actresses, though Shraddha started out with Yash Raj Films, she got a good break with Aashiqui 2. Alia has proved herself in Highway and her 2 States looks interesting. Parineeti has huge potential too. All of them are talented, have got big-banner films and are here to stay.”
Trade expert Taran Adarsh couldn’t agree more. He says, “I am amazed with the new talent in the industry. Varun and Sidharth took me by surprise with their performance in their recent films. Actresses such as Shraddha and Parineeti are phenomenal. The best part about the young guns is that they do only one film at a time and are amazing on screen. Each one of them has a bright future in the industry.”
Veteran producer Mukesh Bhatt adds, “All of them are talented, but only those who choose the right film will sustain. They should not be short-sighted and take a wrong decision. Once they gain stardom money will follow.”
Ad guru Prahlad Kakar says, “Some of them have tremendous potential as they are insiders who can easily adapt themselves. For the outsiders the incubation period is slightly longer. As for Aditya Roy Kapur he will take a little while to establish himself as he is not a chocolate hero. All of them are good for television commercials as today companies are looking for younger actors to be their brand ambassadors.”
