"Judge it on trailer, not reviews": Mrunal Thakur appeals for fair chance for Gumraah

With Gumraah running in theatres, Mrunal Thakur urges audiences to judge a film on the basis of the trailer, not the ‘reviews or buzz’
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 9, 2023)
Almost half a decade in the Hindi film industry, yet Mrunal Thakur has never opted for the easy way out, always seeking diverse characters to showcase and explore her skill set. She reasons that it is not only to keep things interesting but also to ensure that the audience finds her in every genre.
“All I want to do is entertain people across genres,” she says, while assuring that she will keep doing romances. “The kind of romantic scripts I am now getting [after Sita Ramam] are so beautiful. And for the section that might like a thriller, for them, I have a Gumraah.”
The Aditya Roy Kapur-starrer, the remake of the 2019 Tamil hit Thadam, was released in theatres this Friday. Thakur believes that while making good content is important, its merit doesn’t matter if it is not promoted enough for the audience to know about its existence.
“Good films are being made, but people aren’t watching them because they aren’t aware. Earlier, I used to find it difficult to [promote films], but I am getting better at it. I realise it is a necessity,” says the actor, who has been observing how people are judging the film solely because it is a remake. Thakur urges people to give Gumraah a chance based on the trailer and the novelty of its casting and not on the “buzz and reviews”.
“Yes, Gumraah is a remake, but watch it for the director’s [Vardhan Ketkar] take [on the original], for Aditya who has given the best performance of his career, and because I haven’t done something like this before,” she appeals.
Thakur, who became one of the most sought-after actors post the multilingual film Sita Ramam (2022), has four more films in the pipeline this year—Pippa, Pooja Meri Jaan, Lust Stories 2 and Nani 30. “The idea is to show my versatility. Today, I have the confidence to look a filmmaker in the eyes and tell them, ‘Give me any role, and I would be able to perform it well’. There is nothing that I cannot do, and I want my audience to see that too.”
Tabu's character in Drishyam is the one I inspire to be like, in Thadam-Mrunal Thakur

Set to essay a cop for the first time on screen, Mrunal Thakur says actor’s Drishyam character forms her template
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; January 12, 2022)
After a couple of acts as the protagonist’s love interest behind her, Mrunal Thakur is set to play a cop in the Hindi remake of the Tamil film, Thadam.
To play the part in the Aditya Roy Kapur-starrer, Thakur didn’t have to look too far for inspiration. “I loved the way Tabu performed in Drishyam. The first thing that came to my mind was how fierce and feisty the character in the uniform was. Her character is the one I inspire to be like. Donning a uniform comes with a responsibility. I can’t wait to [take it up,]” says the actor.
Magizh Thirumeni’s 2019 original movie is inspired by true events, and follows the murder of a young man. It featured Arun Vijay in a double role, alongside Tanya Hope, Smruthi Venkat and Vidya Pradeep. Vardhan Ketkar takes charge as director for this version.
While prep work for the film is expected to commence this month, Thakur will not be seen pulling off action sequences. “To play this character, I need to focus on the performance. I need to nab the body language.”
Surely, understanding the psyche of the character couldn’t have been a mean feat for the actor, who hails from a family of police officials. “Apart from my father, everyone in the family was an ACP or DC. I grew up with my uncles, so it is nice to [showcase their lifestyle].”
While she has watched the original, she finds promise in Ketkar’s fresh vision. “This is also Vardhan’s first film, so I am excited to begin this project. And as far as working with Aditya is concerned, we met only briefly, but I am looking forward to collaborating with him.”

BOMBAY TIMES (July 29, 2021)
After the grand success of Kabir Singh, producers Bhushan Kumar and Murad Khetani have announced multiple projects. After Kartik Aaryan-starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor, now they are all set to collaborate for the Hindi remake of the Tamil hit Thadam. Aditya Roy Kapur has been signed to play the lead role in this action thriller. Based on true events, this untitled film will see him in a double role for the first time, in two completely different avatars. Helmed by debutant director Vardhan Ketkar, the film is tentatively scheduled to go on floors in September this year.
Aditya says, “I am inspired and excited to be a part of telling such an interesting story. The original film was incredibly riveting and entertaining, and it left a lasting impression on me. As an actor, getting a chance to do a double role is double the preparation and double the challenge, and I’m certainly up for it. I look forward to collaborating with Bhushan ji, Murad bhai and Vardhan to bring this exciting thriller to the screen soon.”
Bhushan Kumar shares, “When Murad bhai shared the idea of the Hindi remake of Thadam, I was excited as it had received a lot of acclaim down south. Working with like-minded people is always fun, that is why I like collaborating with Murad bhai. The last film we did with Aditya was an action film (Malang) and everyone loved him in that role. We all mutually agreed he would fit the characters in this as well.”
Murad Khetani says, “When I watched Thadam, I instantly knew that this story needs to reach the masses. Soon after, I reached out to the makers and acquired the rights. When I shared the story with Bhushan ji, he came on board immediately. Aditya is doing great work and his image as an action hero has been highly appreciated. Since our movie needed a strong personality like his, we reached out to him and he instantly agreed to come on board.”
The film is being produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and Murad Khetani’s Cine1 Studios.

Sources say Sidharth Malhotra to headline espionage thriller by debutant director before kicking off Thadam remake
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; December 2, 2020)
A busy 2021 awaits Sidharth Malhotra, who has four projects lined up in Shershaah, the Thadam remake, the DJ Duvvada Jagannadham (2017) remake and Thank God. While he has wrapped up the shoot of the biopic on late Captain Vikram Batra, the actor was scheduled to begin filming the Thadam remake early next year. However, there might be a change in plans as one hears that Malhotra — who has been reading scripts through the lockdown — has given his nod to a spy thriller. The actioner, produced by Amar Butala and to be helmed by ad filmmaker Shantanu Bagchi, is likely to mark his first film shoot post the pandemic.
"Sidharth loved the script and came on board immediately. Conceptualised as a slick thriller that is high on action, the movie will see him play a spy. The actor is expected to begin the prep by December-end before the director calls for action in January. The Hindi adaptation of Thadam, which is to be directed by Vardhan Ketkar, has been pushed for now," reveals a source.
mid-day reached out to Malhotra's team, which did not respond till press time.

BOMBAY TIMES (March 4, 2020)
After joining hands for the first time to deliver the 2019 hit, Kabir Singh, producers Bhushan Kumar and Murad Khetani are coming together for their fourth film. They will jointly produce an action thriller — Hindi remake of the South hit, Thadam — with Sidharth Malhotra. The duo had earlier announced the Kartik Aaryan-starrer, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and a Sandeep Reddy Vanga-directorial as their future projects.
The yet-to-be titled film, directed by debutant Vardhan Ketkar, will mark Sidharth’s first outing in a double role. The actor, who has been a part of action films earlier, will be seen in two completely different avatars. The movie will have a start-to-finish schedule, which will begin in May in Delhi. The crew is currently busy locking locations.
Talking about the film, which marks his fourth association with Murad and second with Sidharth, Bhushan Kumar says, “Working with Murad bhai is fun and smooth. We share the same love and passion for films and hence, our collaborations have always been successful. After he mentioned Thadam, and I read the Hindi script, it was an instant yes from my side. It was a unanimous decision to get Sidharth on board, and we are sure that he will surprise the audience with this film. Vardhan has previously worked with one of the best directors in the industry and he is apt to lead this project.”
Murad Khetani adds, “I saw Thadam in its release week and absolutely loved it, especially after knowing that it’s based on a real incident. I approached the Tamil makers immediately and bought the rights for its Hindi remake. Sidharth was my first choice and when I approached him, he instantly agreed to come on board. I share a wonderful relationship with Bhushan ji. After the success of Kabir Singh, this is our fourth collaboration with T-Series. We are also looking forward to working with Vardhan, who is making his directorial debut with this film.”
Produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and Murad Khetani’s Cine1 Studios, this yet-untitled film will release on November 20.

Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 25, 2020)
Mirror was the first to report (January 31) that Sidharth Malhotra has signed the official remake of the 2019 Tamil Hit, Thadam, to be produced by Murad Khetani and Bhushan Kumar. The South remake will be the first time the actor attempts a double role, playing a businessman and a small-time thief. Now, we have learnt that the action-thriller goes on the floors in May and will be shot in Delhi in a two-month, start-to-finish schedule. While the original, inspired by a real-life story, was set in Chennai, a source close to the development informs that makers of the Hindi version wanted to base the film in a metro with a nightlife. “After several rounds of discussions and recce, they zeroed in on Delhi. The team will shoot at real locations in the Capital city. The chase sequences will be canned on busy streets,” the source added.
The makers are on the look-out for an A-list actress to play the female lead. “Sid, who sports two looks in the film—a suave businessman and a rowdy—will undergo look tests and workshops in April to create the avatars,” the source revealed.
Thadam, written and directed by Magizh Thirumeni, featured Arun Vijay in the lead and revolved around a murder that results in a cat-and-mouse game between two identical characters and the cops. The remake marks the directorial debut of Vardhan Ketkar, who was an assistant director on two Sidharth-starrers, Brothers and Kapoor & Sons. He has also worked with Murad on his 2017 comedy, the Anees Bazmee-directed Mubarakan.
The film is the second remake for Murad and Bhushan after Shahid Kapoor’s 2019 hit Kabir Singh, which was adapted from the Telugu film Arjun Reddy. The duo is also producing Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which is being shot in Jaipur and have signed Sandeep Vanga for another project.
Sid’s next is the Captain Vikram Batra biopic, Shershaah, that also features Kiara Advani.

The actor plays a businessman and a thief, who look identical, in a murder mystery; film is produced by Murad Khetani and goes on floors in May
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 31, 2020)
After Marjaavaan last year, in which he played the larger-than-life Raghu, Sidharth Malhotra is set for more maar-dhaad. Mirror has learnt that the actor has signed another action thriller being produced by Murad Khetani. The yet-untitled film is the official remake of the 2019-Tamil hit Thadam and will go on the floors this May with a start-to-finish schedule.“Sidharth plays a double role for the first time in his career, a businessman and a small-time thief and gambler always looking to make a quick buck. The film is currently in prep and the team is working towards creating two distinct looks for him,” revealed a source close to the development, adding that the makers are on the lookout for an A-list actress who is expected to be on board within a fortnight.
Thadam, written and directed by Magizh Thirumeni, had a double dose of Arun Vijay and revolved around a murder that results in a cat-and-mouse game between two identical characters and the cops. “The story has plenty of thrills which lend themselves to some interesting chase sequences, something that appealed to Sid instantly, in addition to the challenge of playing a double role,” the source informed.
This will be a second remake for Murad Khetani after Shahid Kapoor-starrer Kabir Singh which was based on the Telugu film, Arjun Reddy. “Thadam is inspired by a real-life story and got a lot of appreciation for its twists and turns which result in an unexpected climax. The team feels it has the potential to appeal to a Hindi-speaking audience,” the source added.
The film will mark the directorial debut of Vardhan Ketkar, who was an assistant director on two Sidharth-starrers, Brothers and Kapoor & Sons. He also worked with Murad on his 2017 comedy, the Anees Bazmee-directed Mubarakan. Sidharth has already wrapped up the Vikram Batra biopic, Shershaah, and will soon kick-off Indra Kumar’s next, also featuring Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. He will end the year by starting another action-packed film with Bhushan Kumar and Nikkhil Advani as the producers.
