(Crisp) Movie Review: TUJHE MERI KASAM by FENIL SETA

Tujhe Meri Kasam was re-released yesterday. It was originally released in 2003 and has never been available on DVD, OTT or TV channels ever since. This is because it keeps on regularly playing in theatres in certain towns of Maharashtra. Believe it or not, it runs house full most of the time in these centres and has a cult following. Having watched the film finally, I can understand why the film has a fan base. It rests on a wafer-thin plot and even reminds one of college romance films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Saathiya and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Yet, it works big time for the humour. We just don't have such films anymore and that adds to the fun. The chemistry between Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh is lovely. The film does get stretched and even drops in a few places. The ending is sudden but thankfully, these are minor blemishes. Riteish Deshmukh is damn good in his debut role. Genelia Deshmukh looked adorable and is effortless. Supriya Pilgaonkar, Asrani and Tinnu Anand are too funny. Shriya Saran is sweet in her debut Hindi role but her track seems a bit unwanted. Satish Shah, Shakti Kapoor, Supriya Karnik and Anuradha Patel do well as the parents. Raja Bherwani is a bit raw but works. Bipasha Basu and Isha Koppikar add to the glam factor with their cameos. All songs (by Viju Shah) are catchy, especially the title song. All in all, Tujhe Meri Kasam is a film meant to be enjoyed with friends and family. Do give it a try in cinemas if the other releases don't interest you.

Fenil's Bollywood Talk # 847

RE-RELEASE SEASON CONTINUES; TUMBBAD EXPECTED TO GIVE NEW RELEASES TOUGH COMPETITION

Finally, after nearly a month, a mainstream Hindi film would be up for release – The Buckingham Murders. It stars Kareena Kapoor in the lead and it also marks her first film as a producer. It is directed by Hansal Mehta and is the story of a cop with a tragic past trying to solve a murder case. Kareena looks apt for the role and with Hansal as its director, it can be a film to watch out for. Interestingly, it is releasing in the original Hinglish version as well as the dubbed Hindi version.

Sadly, the buzz for The Buckingham Murders is very low. There’s hardly even any awareness about the film. Hence, the opening will be poor and hopefully, with good word of mouth, it’ll pick up considerably.

The film that would make the most noise this week is Tumbbad. It was released in 2018 and did a business of just Rs. 12.14 crores. Over the years, it achieved a cult following. Interestingly, the film has vanished from the internet and now, the only way to watch it is in cinemas when it re-releases tomorrow. In 2018, it had an opening of Rs. 51 lakhs. This time, it seems like it’ll have double the opening as the advances are encouraging and many shows are fast-filling. A theatre like Cinepolis, Viviana Mall, Thane is playing as many as 14 shows of the film, which is unheard of for a re-released film!

The other surprise re-release is Tujhe Meri Kasam. It was the debut of Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh. Many are not aware that it never got a release on OTT, TV or DVD and has a cult following in certain towns of Maharashtra. It has got limited shows and there’s curiosity among a tiny section of the audience for this film as they want to know why this film is watched 4, 5 and even 6 times by some people.

Veer-Zaara’s re-release caught attention and it now remains to be seen how it fares. Finally, the Hollywood film Speak No Evil has a limited release and will need positive reports to sustain.

On OTT, Sector 36 would drop on Netflix. It stars Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal and is produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films and Jio Studios. The awareness is limited but it got a great response at a film festival recently. Hence, it can be expected to get huge viewership.

I haven’t seen Tujhe Meri Kasam in 21 years. I can’t watch it; I will cringe if I see it-Riteish Deshmukh

After 20 years, Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh’s debut film ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’ to re-release on September 13

Niharika Lal & Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; September 11, 2024)

While debut films are special for most actors in their professional journey, for Riteish and Genlia Deshmukh, the movie marked the beginning of their life together as a couple. The two first met when they signed the film and fell in love during the making of Tujhe Meri Kasam. It hit the screens in January 2003, and nearly a decade later, in 2012, the duo tied the knot.

Now, 21 years later, the film is being re-released. Talking about it, Riteish said, “It’s been 21 years since the film released, and it has, of course, been a part of our discussions at home. The movie is obviously very close to our hearts. Just like we celebrate our marriage and dating anniversary, we also celebrate Tujhe Meri Kasam anniversary.”

Riteish is glad that the audience will get to watch it on the big screen, as it’s not available on any OTT platform. “The film is not available on any OTT platforms, but over the years, it would be re-released during festivals like Diwali in Maharashtra. On social media, people often ask us where they can watch the film, and I am glad that it is re-releasing in theatres. Whenever I go to different parts of Maharashtra to promote my other films, people still sing songs from that film.”

Ask Riteish how many times he has watched his debut film, and he replies, “I haven’t seen the film in 21 years. I can’t watch it… I will cringe if I see it (laughs). For Genelia and me, the film was special because it changed our lives. We started our journey together with it. We were not prepared to be actors. Our lives changed because of that one film.”

Riteish Deshmukh joins the cast of upcoming Marathi thriller, Adrushya

Mihir Bhanage (BOMBAY TIMES; July 19, 2021)

We had earlier reported about actors Pushkar Jog and Manjari Fadnnis coming together for the Marathi film, Adrushya. We’ve now exclusively learnt that the Kabir Lal directorial will also feature Riteish Deshmukh in a pivotal role.

Interestingly, Kabir and Riteish’s bond dates back to the latter’s debut film, Tujhe Meri Kasam, for which Kabir was the cinematographer. Happy about collaborating with the cinematographer-director again, Riteish says, “Kabir Lal is the reason I am in films. He had seen me on a Subhash Ghai film’s set where I had just gone to see the shoot. Maybe he thought that I wanted to be an actor, although I had nothing in mind about getting into films then. So, when Tujhe Meri Kasam (TMK) was being made, he recommended me for the film. He was the cinematographer for the film which launched my career.”

Riteish adds, “It feels great to be reuniting with him for a film after almost two decades. We shot for TMK in 2001. The fact that Adrushya is his first Marathi directorial makes this collaboration special. We had a lot of fun bonding and recalling old days while shooting.”

Besides Pushkar and Manjari, Adrushya also features Saurabh Gokhale, reportedly in a negative role, and Ajay Kumar Singh. While details about the film and Riteish’s role in it haven’t been divulged, the film is said to be adapted from the Spanish film Julia’s Eyes. This will be Riteish’s third Marathi outing as an actor, after Lai Bhaari and Mauli. He is also slated to appear as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in an upcoming Marathi trilogy on the Maratha warrior king, to be helmed by Nagraj Manjule.

Genelia has given my life a structure-Riteish Deshmukh

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; February 3, 2021)

From romantic pictures and funny videos with their boys to funky dance moves, Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh are often seen setting couple goals through their social media posts. The duo met and fell in love in 2001 during the making of their debut film, Tujhe Meri Kasam, which hit the screens in 2003. While there was constant speculation about them being in a serious relationship, they didn’t speak about it till they tied the knot on February 3, 2012.

Riteish and Genelia, who are parents to Riaan (6) and Rahyl (4), celebrate nine years of togetherness today. In a chat with Bombay Times, Riteish says that unofficially, it’s their 19th year together as a couple. “It’s been a wonderful journey. To be in a relationship or a marriage that is so good is a blessing. We have known each other for 19 years,” he shares.

Ask him what keeps them going so strong, and he replies, “Genelia and I keep our needs and wants limited. We are happy with all that we have. Once your circle of happiness is small, you feel satisfied and content easily.”

The actor adds that Genelia has added a structure to his life. He further elaborates, “She helped me better my food habits. I used to eat at 1 am or at any given time, but today, I am done with my dinner by 7 pm. In fact, I used to be a hardcore non-vegetarian, but for four years, I have been a vegetarian. It’s been nearly eight months now that I have turned vegan. Also, Genelia has given my life a structure. She has taught me time management. I didn’t know a day could have so much time (smiles!).”

The Kapil Sharma Show: Genelia and Riteish Deshmukh introduce Genee and Dholu

Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 24, 2020)

Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza are one of the most fun couples in B-town, and their chemistry was evident during a guest turn on The Kapil Sharma Show. The duo began dating in 2003 after their debut film, Tujhe Meri Kasam, and a year later, were cast together in Indra Kumar’s Masti. The film had a wedding sequence which, they admit, felt a little unreal back then. “But telling ourselves that who knows where the future might take us, we just enjoyed every bit of it,” laughed Genelia with her husband, admitting that, like in the film, he still takes allowance from her. “She has earned more than me and I am proud of it. So, I don’t mind asking her for a monthly salary,” he shared.

The couple further revealed that they have cute nicknames for each other. Riteish calls Genelia, Genee, while she calls him Dholu. The actress, who had taken a break from acting to raise their kids, a few years ago, stated that she is set to get back to work now. “When I had children, I thought I should give them the right attention. Now, I feel that they have reached an age where they don’t want me around all the time as they have their own friends and a full day of school. So, slowly, I can start doing some work,” she concluded.
