Some odd, bizarre things I read about myself include claims that I have had a hair transplant-Shalini Passi

Divya Kaushik (BOMBAY TIMES; December 30, 2024)

Being an art collector, fashion patron and philanthropist, Shalini Passi was always used to packed travel itineraries and social calendar blocked for months, but this year, for the first time, she had a new task at hand – managing a fandom obsessed with her diet, skincare routine, wardrobe and her collection of bags. Shalini, a popular name in Delhi’s social circle for years, emerged as the most popular name from the show Fabulous Lives Vs Bollywood Wives. Be it her sassy persona, fashion choices or just details about her life, everything about Shalini became a hit on social media in 2024.

‘I’m really grateful for the love that I’ve received’
Ask Shalini about how her life has changed in the past few months and she says, “There is always a certain kind of fame attached when you come on a huge OTT platform, what I did not anticipate was the love that I am getting from all corners of the world. And not just love, people are also saying how they have been inspired by me, especially young people. That has inspired me to work harder. All these messages and pictures from around the world have been wind beneath my wings. I’m really grateful for the love that I’ve received from all over the world. After the release of the series, I had planned to go on a vacation and travel in the country. I had to drop that plan to have all the media interactions and interviews. It’s been slightly more hectic than my usual pace, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”

‘There have been incidents when people saw me, screamed my name and came running for pictures’
She adds that it isn’t just on social media where fans have been following every detail about her, she has had some fun encounters with fans in real life too.

She says, “I have had some very interesting encounters in hotels, which have been real-life experiences with fans. For instance, there have been moments when fans started screaming and running towards me in the hotel lobby while I was shooting. I also had fans when I went for Bigg Boss; there were a lot of fans outside Filmistan theatre, even at Mehboob Studios crowd started gathering outside to take pictures. One of my favourite moments was at Sophia College where I had so many women fans, that was amazing. I had some fun incidents in Chennai too when people came up to me to take pictures and, share their stories.”

Addressing the Passi memes, she says, “I love it when people spend so much of their time on memes and get so creative with them”

‘Some odd, bizarre things I read about myself include claims that I have had a hair transplant’
Shalini adds that as her beauty regime, diet plans have now become a social media content. She has also read some bizarre things about herself online. “Some odd, bizarre things I read about myself include claims that I’ve had a hair transplant. And yeah, that was very funny because everybody in my family and my friends know that I’ve had long hair for the longest time. I’ve shaved my hair in Tirupati four times, and it always grows back. The texture of my hair is the same as it has always been like that, it is not what people claim it to be. I’m just blessed to have good hair,” she says.

‘I love it when little girls have ‘Sassy Passi Parties’ and wear hair bands’
From her old wedding pictures to details about her husband Sanjay Passi’s business, almost everything about Shalini Passi is now on social media, but she says that she never considered this to be intrusive.

“My old pictures already existed on social media, people just went further and searched them. I feel that a lot of people think it’s an invasion of privacy, but I feel that I’m getting so much love, and I have nothing to hide. If they want to know my age, how many children I have, I think it’s fair enough. I feel that I got onto this platform so that I could be a voice for the people, especially for north India. But I came out as somebody who people were able to relate to. I came out as somebody whose different aspects of personality resonated with various people of different generations. I especially love it when little girls have ‘Sassy-Passi Parties’ and wear hair bands and clips. I think there’s a whole generation of Shalinians who are going to follow what I have done for a long time,” she says.

Shalini’s pug Boston is a perfect poser!
Shalini Passi’s 13-year-old pet dog Boston is no less than a star now that he has also been part of the show. “He is as popular as I am. He was also a part of the show and now he has got a fan following of his own,” shares Shalini with a big smile as she fixes a scarf in the same print as her dress around Boston’s neck. “He has also become very smart now when it comes to shooting. He knows how to pose and will look straight into the camera once he notices them around,” she adds.

Amitabh Bachchan visits Tirupati to ring in his 80th birthday on an auspicious note

Covid-19: Amitabh Bachchan opens up about 'wiping floors', 'making bed' as he quarantines

Bachchan visits Tirupati to ring in milestone birthday on an auspicious note; muted family celebration due to the demise of politician-friend Mulayam Singh Yadav
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; October 11, 2022)

What would be a fitting way to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of Indian cinema’s giants? While many would opt for a grand celebration, Amitabh Bachchan thinks otherwise. The megastar has chosen to mark his milestone birthday today with the two things he cherishes the most — devotion, and family. On Monday afternoon, he flew off to Tirupati to ring in his big day on an auspicious note. The veteran actor, along with his family, will offer a special puja at the Venkateswara Temple today.

Bachchan, who has been filming Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) 14, has taken a few days off from the shoot. A source reveals, “After spending Monday night at Tirupati, the family will have a special puja early in the morning, and are likely to fly back to Mumbai later in the day. They have decided against a celebration due to the demise of Samajwadi Party chief and family friend Mulayam Singh Yadav.”

Bachchan is known to have a birthday ritual — when in the city, he begins his day with a puja at Jalsa, after which he heads to Pratiksha and spends a few hours in his late parents’ room. His day is incomplete until he meets his legion of fans who throng his Juhu residence for a glimpse of him. For the evening, a quiet dinner has been lined up with wife Jaya, children Abhishek and Shweta Nanda, daughter-in-law Aishwarya, and grandchildren Navya Naveli, Agastya and Aaradhya.

To mark the occasion, the makers of KBC have shot a special episode that sees actor-wife Jaya, and Abhishek take the hot seat opposite Bachchan.

Fans cheer on for Big B
Among Bachchan’s biggest fan clubs, the AB EF Team Worldwide is celebrating its idol’s landmark birthday over two days across Mumbai and Chennai. The function will start with a prayer at the ISKCON Temple in Juhu.

Sanjay Jumani, administrator of the fan club, says, “We had a round of cake-cutting for 2,350 kids of the Gold Heart Foundation in Chennai. We also sponsored [essentials] at an old-age home in Mahakali Caves.”

A special van featuring Bachchan’s looks from his various films will do the rounds of Juhu today. On Monday, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda attended a special screening of Don at PVR Juhu, with the megastar’s fans.

There is something magical about being in India & this industry, says Sunny Leone as she completes 10 years in the country

Sunny Leone's Shoot Day Featured Lots Of Fun And Smashed Pani Puris

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; April 19, 2022)

A decade ago, she was introduced into the Bigg Boss house to add more glam and spike up the ratings. After that, the doors to Bollywood opened up for Sunny Leone and she quickly embraced the opportunities that came her way. In a chat with Bombay Times, she talks about the fast-growing entertainment space in India, how she fits into it all and how the next few years seem packed with the kind of work she always desired to do. Excerpts:

You’re completing a decade of living in India and being a part of the entertainment industry here. What do you think has worked for you and made you turn India into your home?
It has been so amazing. My husband Daniel (Weber) and I could erase some of the bad memories, but it has been a fulfilling decade which we have spent here. It’s been a dream — we’ve gotten into production, films, shows, television and entrepreneurship in different spaces. I love being here and I am very happy about it. A long time ago, Daniel and I were staying at a five-star hotel, our makeshift home. I was shooting for Jism 2 at that time and I met a woman who had told me that once you are here, India will get a hold of you and you will never want to move to another country. She was right! Like it happens to so many people who come here, it happened to me, too.

There is something magical about being in India and being in this industry. This country holds you back in a good way. I remember what that lady said as I complete each year here. I never want to leave and be anywhere else. This is my home. At work, I have tapped into so many different outlets of entertainment. India is one of the fastest emerging countries as far as creating content goes — we’re doing so much of it every single day. It’s unbelievable. If you are a professional and sincere, you will be very busy. If you just focus on work and go back home, and not steal someone else’s hard work, you’ll be home and at peace.

Your web show, Anamika on MX Player, drove home the point that there’s more to you than a glamourous image and fine dancing skills. What took you so long to pick an author-backed part like that?
I can only choose from what’s on the table. Certain projects that came to me, which sounded interesting, did not complete the circle to move forward. We were happy to even get a meeting with Vikram Bhatt. He was kind and generous. And I was floored because it doesn’t happen very often that someone sees me in a completely different light. I have worked with some amazing people in my career, but this was different. It was an immediate yes and I didn’t need more information than he already had. He makes you want to trust him; he is honest and hardworking. The story was compelling, it was outside my comfort zone and I hadn’t had the chance to try that before. Vikram nurtured me in every way possible and he always had so much to share, there is a reason people liked the show. The best part is that he saw me differently; he saw past the glamour and showed me in a unique way. We like actors and want to emulate them because they are glamorous and I don’t want to take away from that, but Vikram saw something. I am honoured that he did.

Your superhero film, Shero, is one of the four films you’ve worked on down South. We’ve seen a growing trend of Bollywood actors doing multilingual films. What attracts you to work across film industries?
I will have to go back to what I said about picking from what I’m offered. Shero is another space that people have not imagined me in. It’s a psychological thriller with action and crazy stuff thrown in. I have one film which allows me to play a glamorous part, and two others, one of which has some really big names in it. I’ve just finished shooting for one at Tirupati.

Did you plan for your career to move this way? Did you ever set a game plan for yourself?
I don’t think you can plan all this. I find it interesting when people say that they are waiting for the right project to come their way. How do we ever know what a right project is going to look like? I am language and industry agnostic. I am okay with work in any language as long as it’s good work. We are in a time where content is dubbed in languages that are common for various regions. People are past the idea of the language barrier because everyone wants good content and that is the name of the game. I have prided myself in the fact that Daniel and I are working parents, like a lot of other couples around us. It’s equally important to work and take care of our children. Who doesn’t like to work? I like to work. I want that job more than anyone else and for that, I am willing to go an extra mile and learn the language and prepare my scenes in advance. I just got back from Tirupati where we were shooting. I refused to shoot my portions in Hindi, though it was offered to me. It is important to learn the languages, and even though it takes time, when you go on set, you’re prepared and equipped. I’m an artiste who wants the work — I don’t believe that I need it and I don’t think I deserve it. I want it and I will work hard for it. I’ve learned every single thing I know by working with so many wonderful people. I came here with no formal training in what I am doing today. Not everything I did looked nice. Some of it looked horrible, too. You’re sitting in a room and wondering what you are doing, which is not looking great. It’s a matter of time and with the right guidance and meeting the right people, you grow out of that. We’re well past that point where you have to work with an A-list actor or director. COVID taught us to be humble. It is about finding the people who believe in you and have the patience to nurture you and guide when you falter.

Apart from acting, you have been pursuing different kinds of entrepreneurial interests along with your husband. What pushes you to take on so many ventures?
Daniel and I do 20 things at once. It is not just a movie or a show that I count on to make my life meaningful. I love it all, but that is not it. If something didn’t go well, it’s not in my hands to change that. Like I can’t say, ‘Okay, let’s pull it out, correct it and put it back there...’ for a show or a movie. It doesn’t work like that. You have to be a realist and understand what you are good at. My husband and I are good at multitasking and have our hands in as many avenues of entertainment and lifestyle as we can. Instead of focusing on only one thing. The next five years are going to be about work. We are looking forward to greenlighting more projects from what’s on the table and entrepreneurially, I want to grow. Something that I do today will always pay better tomorrow. I will continue to live with that thought.

Remo DSouza comes to the rescue of background dancers

Fundraiser plans afoot, with promise to choreograph songs that adhere to social distancing
Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 15, 2020)

With no set to report to and actor to direct or choreograph, Remo D’souza has been cutting funny videos of his new, domesticated self, roping in his dog and wife Lizelle as co-actors. He has realised after 21 years of marriage that his better half is a ‘drama queen’ and that there are corners in his home he didn’t know existed. “When I first came to Mumbai, I lived alone and did all the chores. That experience has come in handy. My wife and kids love my masala chawal, dal and egg preparations,” he relays.

It will be a while before he gets back to the editing table, so, the choreographer-turned-filmmaker is happy snipping off hair. “I had just returned from Tirupati when the Coronavirus lockdown was announced, so my hair was taken care of. But Lizelle, our son Zene, the house help and even my dog needed a trim. So, I volunteered. I think I did a good job,” boasts Remo, who also dabbled in paints to commemorate his recent brush with Balaji.

Chatting with the aam aadmi on a one-hour live session every day was also inspirational. “I have three ideas—for a musical, a thriller and an action film—ready to be scripted,” he informs, adding that before the lockdown, he choreographed two songs for the Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt-starrer fantasy adventure drama, Brahmastra: “The song we shot in Varanasi is a travel song and called for the typical Bollywood dance style.” He was simultaneously working on a sports drama inspired by a real-life event.

Currently, all his efforts are focused on helping out-of-work background dancers. “Social distancing norms will be applicable even after we return to the sets, which will be a problem. I’ll try and come up with choreography that adheres to all the rules,” assures Remo who is gearing up for a show to raise money for his tribe. “We will record performances from homes, all the choreographers are coming together to support it.”

He is already in Round 2 of a cross-country online dance competition called Danz Station, which has dancers sending him tapes of their recorded performance. The winner gets a cash prize of Rs 50,000. “We have received some amazing entries so far,” he exults.

Discovering and living with each other, has been so much fun-Deepika Padukone

Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 14, 2019)

Bollywood couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh had a fairytale wedding last year, and while they were reluctant to admit their relationship before marriage, post it, they’ve been setting major #couplegoals. And, completing a year of togetherness, Deepika says the past year has been “fun.”

“Before marriage, we kept it traditional. We didn’t want to live in and discover each other before we tied the knot. We are both quite traditional in that way. Discovering different aspects about each other, and living with each other, has been so much fun,” gushes the 33-year-old.

Their two-day wedding celebrations in Lake Como (Italy) had two ceremonies — the first one was a traditional Konkani Brahmin style wedding on November 14, followed by Anand Karaj the next day. While their wedding was an elaborate affair, followed by multiple receptions, the couple is keeping things very low-key for their anniversary celebrations. They will visit Tirupati Balaji temple and the Padmavathi temple, Andhra Pradesh, today and then fly to Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple tomorrow.

The couple has been busy for the past one year with their respective work commitments. However, Deepika says they have always made sure to make time for each other. She says, “Yes, we’ve been extremely busy. We’ve had our hands full with our work commitments and it’ll be like this for a while. But despite that, whatever time off we get, we spend it with each other. We value that time and look forward to it.”

The pair, who had worked together in films like Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018), have collaborated after marriage, too. They star together in the upcoming sports drama ’83 in which Ranveer plays the role of cricketer Kapil Dev and Deepika, his wife, Romi Dev. So, how has it been working together post-marriage? She says,“It wasn’t any different. We’re both so obsessed with our work on the set that we don’t think about our personal relationship. We think about our characters and the nuances of the scenes. When the camera starts to roll, we are actors, not husband-wife.”

Juhi Chawla lends voice to devotional TV show Sharanam - Safar Vishwas Ka

The actress is lending her voice to a TV show dedicated to pilgrim landmarks across the country
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 10, 2017)

Juhi Chawla is set to lend her voice to a travelogue on TV that will take viewers to popular religious destinations across the country. It will show rituals being performed, have devotees explain why they are drawn to these pilgrim centres and the mythology associated with the temples. The show is called Sharanam - Safar Vishwas Ka.

Confirming the news, the actress says, “Earlier this year, I was on a vacation with my family in London when my manager called to tell me about this show which is all about faith and the positive energy that brings people to these places. I was fascinated by the concept and told her I wanted to be a part of it. I felt it would be a great learning experience and I would be richer from it.” She laughs, adding, “ I’m even getting paid for it.”

Juhi reveals that there’s a Shiva temple close to her Malabar Hill residence and it’s almost like a ritual for her to go there on her children’s (Jhanvi and Arjun) birthday and other significant occasions. It’s a way of thanking God for the joys and asking for the strength to combat trouble.

“Also, whenever I’m in Kolkata, I make it a point to visit Kalighat and offer my prayers to Ma. I’m usually there during the IPL season and on tenterhooks so I visit the temple morning and evening before and after matches. I’ve also been to Vaishno Devi in Jammu, Puri’s famous Jagannath Temple and the Somnath Mandir in Saurashtra, as also Tirupati, Dwarka and Shirdi on family trips,” she reels off.

Recalling a not so pleasant experience Juhi narrates that during the shoot of a South Indian film, as a newcomer she went to Tirupati with her hairdresser and makeup man. “I stood in the paid queue for three-four hours and when my turn came, the usher rudely pushed me away. I was so angry and swore I’d never go back but I have, twice after making a name in films,” she smiles.

As a child Juhi lived in Cuffe Parade and since both her parents worked, there was no set routine to go to a temple every day or even every week. If they felt like it or when her parents had time, they would visit a mandir near Colaba market. “I had a pet dog, Penny, and once she had to undergo a surgery. The vet told us frankly that he didn’t know if she would make it through. I was heartbroken and went running to the temple but it was shut. I still stood there, prayed and sobbed my heart out. An hour later, I went back to the clinic and was told Penny was fine and could be taken home. The memory has stayed with me,” she shares.

Always honest, the actress admits that she’s not a couch potato and only watches TV occasionally, when her inlaws are around. Sometimes husband, Jay Mehta, switches it on. “If I’m at home, there’s always so much to do. But the kids enjoy watching the sports channels and Jay always tunes into the news while my in-laws watch the music shows and serials. I run away from serials because coming from a film background, I know how storylines are manipulated to please the audience. I prefer reality and talent shows,” she signs off.

Ekta Kapoor flies her friends to Macau for her birthday

Meena Iyer (BOMBAY TIMES; June 9, 2015)

Ekta Kapoor turned 40 on June 7. However, she didn't wish to bring any focus to the 'Four-OH' element. It is said her desire was to start the day at Tirupati, where she could seek Lord Balaji's blessings and then have a meal with her family.

A source said, “It had to be an early dinner because soon after the meal was over, Ekta and some of her close friends flew to Macau for a vacation. Quite obviously the birthday girl intended to have a super-blast after she got to Hong Kong.“
